This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 602 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 IN presenting to the public a new history or the states, the indulgence of the reader is asked to a few preliminary remarks respecting the object had in view in these volumes, and the claims which they have upon the attention of the American people. The one great object ever before me has been to present a truthful, impartial, and readable narrative of the origin, rise, and progress of that mighty Republic which, extending from ocean to ocean, is destined to assume yet higher rank, and to wield larger and larger influence among the family of nations. Having an entire and thorough conviction of the superintending care and control of Divine Providence in our country's affairs; having no ends to gain but those of truth and right having no theories to establish. No partisan views or wishes to gratify I have honestly endeavored to ascertain what the truth is, and then to set it forth as clearly, and as fully, as was possible within the limits to which I was restricted. Mere speculations on historic points, I have avoided; attempts to penetrate or pronounce upon the motives of men and nations, beyond what may be regarded as plainly and fairly deducible from their acts, I have deemed of little value; and, in general, I have preferred to leave the intelligent reader to draw his own con elusion from an impartial presentation of the facts and circumstances of the case. At the same time, in cases of difficulty or doubt, I have carefully and conscientiously sought to compare and sift conflicting accounts, and to arrive at that which seemed to be the nearest approximation to the truth which, probably, under the circumstances, can now be attained. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 560 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Medallic History of the United States of America, Vol. 1 Although our political history measures but a hundred years, it records so many memorable deeds, and the names of so many illustrious citizens, that our medals form, even now, an historically valuable collection, to say nothing of the great artistiemerit of some of them. During the War of Independence alone, how many exploits, how many heroes do we find worthy of being thus honoredl How numerous would have been our medals if Congress had not been imbued with the conviction that only the very highest achievements are entitled to such a distinction, and that the value of a reward is enhanced by its rarity! In voting those struck after the War of 1812 with Great Britain, and after that of I846 with Mexico, the same discretion was shown. There was still greater necessity for reserve during the late Civil War, and only two were presented during that painful period: one to Ulysses S. Grant, then a major-general, for Victories, and another to Cornelius Vanderbilt, in acknowledgment of his free gift of the steamship which bore his name. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the United States, Vol. 1 of 2: No; II., Or Uncle Philip's Conversations With the Children About New-York I send you now some farther conversations which I have had with the children about the his tory of our own country; and when you print these, I hepe that allthe little boys and girls in America will be as much pleased with them as the young companions of your old uncle seemed to be while we were talking. We have this time been talking about the History of our own state, New York; and I suppose that my young friends were pleased, because we were speaking of many things that occurred upon the very same soil upon which we now walk. At any rate, they seemed happy, and I was contented to amuse and instruct them. I am very glad that they are all so much pleased with the study of history, for it will be a useful pleasure to them. You know, too, that no man is well educated unless he has studied the history of the world, and particularly the his tory of his own country. So I am delighted that the children are all determined, in this particular. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Navy of the United States of America, Vol. 1 of 2 While biographies of naval men are usually replete with interest, on account of the hazards and stirring incidents of the sea, few general records of nautical events have been found to attract attention, beyond the value that is attached to naked facts. If such has been the case with most of the histories of even the marine of Great Britain, a service that admits of the unity and interest that belong to the operations of fleets, still more may it be looked for in the records of the isolated and simpler incidents of a navy like that of the United States. The difficulty of overcoming this great obstacle has been foreseen from the commencement of this work, and some attempts, that are connected with the arrangements of the subject, have been made to obviate it. The writer is far from flattering himself with entire success, for a history of detached combats is, in truth, a series of episodes, the mind scarcely becoming concentrated on one, when it is required to give its attention to another, while the connecting materials, according to the ordinary practice, are merely a dry detail of documents. Download or read book The Naval History of the United States Vol 1 Classic Reprint written by Willis J. Abbot and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Naval History of the United States, Vol. 1 Such were the buccaneers, desperate, merciless, and insatiate in their lust for plunder. So numerous did they finally become, that no merchant dared to send a ship to the West Indies; and the pirates, finding that they had fairly exterminated their game, were fain to turn land wards for further booty. It was an Englishman that showed the sea rovers this new plan of pillage; one Louis Scott, who descended upon the town of Campeche, and, after stripping the place to the bare walls, demanded that a heavy tribute be paid him, in default of which he would burn the town. Loaded with booty, he sailed back to the buc caneers' haunts in the Tortugas. This expedition was the example that the buccaneers followed for the next few years. City after city fell a prey to the demoniac attacks of the lawless rovers. Houses and Churches were sacked, towns given to the flames, rich and poor plundered alike; murder was rampant; and men and women were subjected to the most horrid tortures, to extort information as to buried treasures.
