This book was released on 2016-10-17 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Rome and the Popes in the Middle Ages, Vol. 2 The Emperors succeeding Constantine at once recognised the fundamental difference between the Church's spiritual sphere of action and the temporal power of the State. The whole period was permeated with the idea, formulated by hundreds of writers in antiquity, that the Church, founded solely for the spiritual salvation of mankind, pursues an object totally different from that of the State; that her existence is sustained by means of a different character, and that she reckons on other and superior forces to enable her to accomplish her task within the minds and hearts Of believers. Download or read book The History of the Popes Vol 2 written by Ludwig Pastor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-21 with total page 626 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of the Popes, Vol. 2: From the Close of the Middle Ages, Drawn From the Secret Archives of the Vatican and Other Original Sources Professor Pastor's "History of the Popes form the close of the Middle Ages," comes to us with a singular and exceptional weight of authority. First, because of the ample encouragement conveyed by the brief of Leo XIII. when the first volume of the history was completed. Such letters of his Holiness do not, indeed, convey a critical approval of the work, but an abundant testimony to the fitness and learning of Dr. Pastor for the accomplishment of his undertaking. Secondly, because this history may be regarded as the first-fruits of the action of the Holy Father, which, a little time ago, so surprised the writers of anti-Catholic history. Lew XIII., as it will be remembered, addressed a letter to the five Cardinals whom he had appointed as a commission to oversee the publication of historical matters contained in the Vatican Archives. The Holy Father charged them to see that the history of the Holy See and of the Church should be written with absolute truth on the only just and imperishable principle that the historica veritas ought to be supreme, of which we have a divine example in Holy Writ, where the sins, even of Saints, are as openly recorded as the wickedness of sinners. In the sixth century, in the monastery Of Bangor, on the east coast Of Ireland, three thousand monks, supporting them selves by manual labour, and, divided into seven choirs, kept up day and night an unceasing service Of song. In Gaul, in the beginning Of the fifth century, according to Sulpicius Severus, a contemporary, no less than two thousand monks assembled for the funeral Of the great founder of monasteries, St. Martin Of Tours. In Spain, St. Martin Of Bracara (braga), who worked among the Suevi of Galleccia, took as his example the monastic and apostolic ministry Of his namesake Of Tours. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Ecclesiastical and Political History of the Popes of Rome During the Sixteenth and Seventeenth Centuries, Vol. 2 of 2 Like travellers who quit some range of lofty mountains commanding a wide and magnificent prospect, to enter a valley which circumscribes their view within its narrow boundaries, we pass from the survey of the great events of the world's history in which the papacy played so important a part, to the observation of the occurrences peculiar to the States of the Church. The States of the Church first attained to their complete constitution in the times of Urban VIII. At this epoch let us begin their history. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of the City of Rome in the Middle Ages, Vol. 4: Part II Paschalis owed his rapid success to Norman swords and to the irresistible power of gold, but his strength was dissipated in endless petty wars against petty tyrants. The popes of this age were forced, like all other bishops, to do battle for their temporal dominion against a thousand greedy enemies, and if Paschalis the gentle-natured monk re ected on the part played by the sacred'overseer of the Church in the constant struggle for temporal property, he must have sighed for the apostolic times when the bishops possessed nothing on earth beyond the things of heaven. This book was released on 2015-07-05 with total page 500 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Lives of the Popes in the Early Middle Ages, Vol. 4 If edification were the sole, or even the principal, object which I had in view in undertaking to write the biographies of the Popes of the early Middle Ages, I might perhaps have hesitated about publishing the present series. But I wish to pursue a higher end than that of indulging in a style of historical writing which is supposed to be calculated to edify a certain type of mind. I would fulfil what I regard as a command laid upon me by the late glorious Head of the Church, and strive to make known the history of the Popes of Rome. And, as it was a cardinal maxim with Leo XIII. that truth would not injure the Church, I am convinced that he would not have had the Lives of some Popes written and the Lives of others left unrecorded, nor would he have wished to see some of their deeds blazoned forth and others buried in eternal oblivion. I know, too, that one of the greatest of the predecessors of Leo XIII. laid it down that "if scandal be taken from the enunciation of truth, it is better to allow the scandal to arise than to leave the word of truth unrecorded."
