Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Kendall County, Illinois, From the Earliest Discoveries to the Present Time Long Ages ago Kendall county was the southeastern corner of barren rock, which reached up to, and beyond the northern end of the State. Chicago on one side was under water, and Morris and Streator on the other, with the southern part of the State, were part of a vast swamp where evergreens and rushes grew and were made into coal. That was the mediaeval time in the world's physical history. Before that, when the sea covered all the country, there were in the water shoals of curious little fellows which geologists have called Tentaculites Oswegoensi, viz.: the Oswego sort of tentaculites, or shell worms. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Historical Encyclopedia of Illinois and History of Kendall County (Historical and Biographical), Vol. 2 One of the conspicuous evidences of modern progress is manifested in the increased interest in local and personal history. In a general sense, real history is the record of past events, while biography is the history of individual life. The close relationship of these two branches of history is recognized by the brilliant essayist and historian, Carlyle, in the statement that History is the essence Of innumerable biographies, and that, in a certain sense all men are historians, in the fact that they furnish the material facts which consti tute true history. Book New Fields of Adventure

Download or read book New Fields of Adventure written by M Jane Johansson and published by Univ. of Tennessee Press. This book was released on 2024 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "Lyman Gibson Bennett (1832-1904) was a Federal soldier who saw extensive service in the Trans-Mississippi Theater. A writer of considerable energy, wit, and intelligence, Bennett's wartime diaries recount his diverse and wide-ranging military record, stretching geographically from the prairies of Illinois to the Rocky Mountains, while a postwar account details, among other things, his labors to recruit "Mountain Feds" in the Ozarks. This volume provides the perspective of an individual who was both a topographical engineer and a common soldier. As a member of the Thirty-Sixth Illinois Infantry, Bennett provided one of the most detailed contemporary accounts of the pivotal Battle of Pea Ridge, March 7-8, 1862. By December 1863, Bennett was promoted to first lieutenant in the newly formed Fourth Arkansas Cavalry (US) and wrote an invaluable first-person account of guerrilla fighting in the Ozark mountains. M. Jane Johansson's critical presentation of his writings will prove useful to scholars of the Ozarks, landscape studies, and the Civil War in the West"--
