This book was released on 1992-09-30 with total page 390 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of this workshop consideres the prospects for opening up a new window on the universe with the generation of High Energy Neutrino telescopes now under construction or being planned. Potential sources of high energy neutrinos such as binary pulsars, supernovae, and active galactic nuclei are discussed. In particular, the recent model of Stecker and collaborators, in which neutrinos with energies as high as 1000 TeV are produced in measurable quantities in the cores of quasars and other active galaxies is critically reviewed.

Book Energy Budget In The High Energy Universe Proceedings Of The International Workshop

Download or read book Energy Budget In The High Energy Universe Proceedings Of The International Workshop written by Katsuhiko Sato and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2007-03-06 with total page 413 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The existence of materials with very high specific energies greatly exceeding the local virial temperature is best represented by cosmic rays, whose origin has long been a mystery. Recent astrophysical observations in X-ray, gamma-ray, neutrino, and high energy cosmic ray experiments, in conjunction with theoretical studies, have revealed various new aspects of the high energy universe, including promising candidates for cosmic ray acceleration sites. As each approach has its own advantages and limitations, it is expected that joint efforts by experimentalists and theorists in various related fields are essential. The contributions in this volume include observation of the universe through a wide range of techniques for detecting cosmic rays, neutrinos, X-rays and gamma-rays, as well as theoretical considerations in understanding their nature and astrophysical aspects.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2012-12-06
  • ISBN : 3642736793
  • Pages : 339 pages

Download or read book Neutrino Physics written by Hans V. Klapdor and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 339 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Neutrinos play an intriguing role in modern physics linking central questions of particle physics, cosmology and astrophysics. The contributions in this book reflect the present status of neutrino physics with emphasis on non-accelerator or beyond-accelerator experiments. Since a nonvanishing neutrino mass would yield an important boundary condition for GUT, SUSY or Superstring models and since neutrinos are the best candidates for dark matter in the universe, the many efforts to look for a neutrino mass, ranging from neutrino oscillation experiments using reactors, accelerators or the sun as neutrino sources, to tritium decay experiments and the search for neutrinoless double beta decay, are described in some detail. One of the sections is devoted to neutrinos from collapsing stars, including the supernova SN 1987 A. Possibilities for detecting cosmological neutrinos are discussed and an outlook to future experiments is given.

Book Neutrinos In The New Millennium Proceedings Of The Johns Hopkins Workshop On Current Problems In Particle Theory 23

Download or read book Neutrinos In The New Millennium Proceedings Of The Johns Hopkins Workshop On Current Problems In Particle Theory 23 written by Gabor Domokos and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2000-07-12 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The physics of neutrinos has acquired a rapidly increasing role within the realm of particle physics. Recognized as an elusive particle since the prediction of its existence by Pauli and its incorporation into particle theory by Fermi in the early thirties, the neutrino was first observed some twenty years later by Reines and Cowan. Experiments carried out by Lederman, Schwartz, Steinberger et al. first revealed the existence of several species of neutrinos. By now, neutrino physics has matured to the point where detailed properties of neutrinos and their mixing can be studied by a number of experiments carried out in various high energy laboratories. Such experiments are relevant not only from viewpoint of understanding the properties of elementary particles, but also the early history of the Universe. This volume discusses the most recent experimental and theoretical results in that exciting area of particle physics.

Book New Worlds In Astroparticle Physics Proceedings Of The International Workshop

Download or read book New Worlds In Astroparticle Physics Proceedings Of The International Workshop written by Mourao Ana Maria and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1998-05-14 with total page 452 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The proceedings of the first meeting on “New Worlds in Astroparticle Physics” focus on the joint field of particle physics and astrophysics. This is a field widely open to both theory and experiment. Important questions of particle physics — from the role of the Higgs scalar to the deconfined QCD phase, the developments beyond the Standard Model and the subtle behavior of neutrinos — are discussed. The same is true for the relevant questions in astrophysics and cosmology — from the fluctuations in the photon background radiation to large scale structure formation, dark matter searches and the origin of cosmic rays at very high energies. The two viewpoints, from the small sizes or from the large scales, are convergent and reveal the same universe: the universe of astroparticle physics.

Book Particles And The Universe Proceedings Of The Johns Hopkins Workshop On Current Problems In Particle Theory 17

Download or read book Particles And The Universe Proceedings Of The Johns Hopkins Workshop On Current Problems In Particle Theory 17 written by Zalan Horvath and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1994-07-15 with total page 514 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An accelerating convergence of interests of particle physics and modern experimental and theoretical astrophysics has been witnessed in the past few years. One of the focal points is the observation and phenomenological characterization of Dark Matter from Galactic to the large scale structure of the Universe. Particle physics provides detailed predictions for the cosmological impact of various dark matter candidates. The other central subjects are neutrino astronomy and cosmic ray reactions which provide valuable information both on stellar structure (solar neutrinos) and on the nature of extreme high energy particle interactions. The lectures presented here represent important new contributions to all these fields.
