Describes a story the firm told him about their debt to Ludlow Gold of New York, which they also cannot pay, as evidence of the serious financial trouble their firm is in. Shaw also mentions that upon receiving the goods owed to him and Knox, he noticed that there was nothing salable left in their store. Relates further conditions of their arrangement.

According to the writer (perhaps Samuel Broome, as he refers to Mr. Platt in the letter), they are suffering from ill treatment by their former creditors in England, due to the war. They are hoping to avoid bankruptcy and hoping they will be able to work out with all their creditors a similar arrangement to the one Samuel Shaw negotiated with them, on behalf of Henry Knox. Reaffirm their commitment to justice in their dealings with their creditors and appreciate the politeness of Henry Knox during these negotiations.

Needs to receive payment from them, so is sending his good friend Samuel Shaw to meet with them. Asks that they either provide payment with interest, or arrange with Shaw to pay it back in a short time. Writes that he does not like to be in this position, especially given his respect for Broome and Platt, and assures them that aside from himself and Shaw, no one knows about this situation and they plan to maintain confidentiality.

Declares that as he has not had a response from Mr. [possibly Robert] Morris in four weeks, he has changed his plans. Instead of remaining in Boston and trying to sell Mr. Morris's teas, which he is holding at 12 per cent higher than the market price, he has asked his brother-in-law, Mr. Parkman, to manage his business affairs and will come to New York to visit Knox and his wife. Has written to Mr. Morris to this effect, and will take passage to New York in four or five days on a ship called Godfrey from Rhode Island. He also wants to hasten his trip because of the arrival of his friend Mr. [Thomas] Randall in Baltimore (see GLC02437.03176). Also adds a note for Mr. [perhaps Samuel] Ogden, explaining that a merchant in Boston has agreed to buy Mr. Ogden's iron.

First, he forwards Mr. Gardiner's oration on the anniversary of independence. If you can travel through so much various matter as it is composed of, it will be a strong proof of your perseverance. References a letter he sent Knox on 1 August, saying that it was written in the bitterness of my soul, and what is worse, a bitterness which still continues; he is having problems settling his father's estate, and is resigned that the outcome will not benefit himself or any of his siblings. Relates some information about a navigation act regarding the British, and hopes Congress will exercise its powers. Finally, discusses a dispute between the towns of Boston and Roxbury, Massachusetts, that has been occurring over the last two weeks, regarding enforcement of an act prohibiting people from riding out on Sundays. Recounts the way the lawyer, Mr. Benjamin Hickbourn [most sources say Hichborn] resolved the dispute with Judge Boardman of Roxbury.

Book excerpt: The writer, on behalf of the firm of Broome & Platt, encloses documents detailing the correspondence between the firm and its creditors in England, as requested. Outlines the firm's dealings with John Blackburn, of London, who until July 1783 was apparently on good terms with the firm. Invited them to come to London to settle their business whenever convenient, so Mr. Platt left in December 1783 and arrived London in mid-January 1784. Upon calling on Mr. Blackburn, Mr. Platt found a clause which had artfully been kept from us: unbeknownst to them, their contract with Mr. Blackburn stated that if they did not arrive prior to 1 January 1784, all the clauses were null and void, and the contract would no longer protect them. Mr. Blackburn then forced Mr. Platt to agree to pay compound interest, and give notes Including Interest, rather than receive rough treatment from their hands. Makes arrangements to receive the documents back from Samuel Shaw when Shaw and Knox are done reading them.
