Download or read book The School of Franz Brentano written by L. Albertazzi and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 516 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The central idea developed by the contributions to this book is that the split between analytic philosophy and phenomenology - perhaps the most impor tant schism in twentieth-century philosophy - resulted from a radicalization of reciprocal partialities. Both schools of thought share, in fact, the same cultural background and their same initial stimulus in the thought of Franz Brentano. And one outcome of the subsequent rift between them was the oblivion into which the figure and thought of Brentano have fallen. The first step to take in remedying this split is to return to Brentano and to reconstruct the 'map' of Brent ani sm. The second task (which has been addressed by this book) is to revive inter est in the theoretical complexity of Brentano' s thought and of his pupils and to revitalize those aspects that have been neglected by subsequent debate within the various movements of Brentanian inspiration. We have accordingly decided to organize the book into two introductory es says followed by two sections (Parts 1 and 2) which systematically examine Brentano's thought and that of his followers. The two introductory essays re construct the reasons for the 'invisibility', so to speak, of Brentano and set out of his philosophical doctrine. Part 1 of the book then ex the essential features amines six of Brentano's most outstanding pupils (Marty, Stumpf, Meinong, Ehrenfels, Husserl and Twardowski). Part 2 contains nine essays concentrating on the principal topics addressed by the Brentanians.

Download or read book Untimely Reflections written by Friedrich Nietzsche and published by Livraria Press. This book was released on 2024-05-09 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A new translation into American English with introduction, translated from the original manuscript of Nietzsche's 1876 Unzeitgemäße Betrachtungen. This edition is bilingual- the original text is included in the back as reference material behind the English translation. This is volume 2 in The Complete Works of Friedrich Nietzsche from Livraria Press. This chronological, systematic set of Nietzsche's works is the first ever bilingual complete major works of Nietzsche published in English & the original German. Untimely Reflections is a collection of four essays written by Friedrich Nietzsche between 1873 and 1876. The essays are a critique of contemporary culture, society, and science, and Nietzsche argues that the "modern" way of thinking is inherently flawed. In the first essay, "David Strauss: The Confessor and the Writer," Nietzsche criticizes the way in which Strauss uses historical facts to support his own personal beliefs, describing it as a "falsification of history." In the second essay, "On the Uses and Disadvantages of History for Life," Nietzsche argues that "history should be a means to an end" and that individuals should not be enslaved to the past. In the third essay, "Schopenhauer as Educator," Nietzsche praises the philosopher Schopenhauer's ideas and his emphasis on self-overcoming. The fourth essay, "Richard Wagner in Bayreuth," is a critique of the composer Richard Wagner and his approach to art and politics. Nietzsche writes, "Wagner's art is not the expression of a higher rank of man, but the symptom of a lower." Overall, "Untimely reflections" is a collection of essays in which Nietzsche critiques contemporary culture, society, and science, and argues that the "modern" way of thinking is inherently flawed.

Download or read book The Mysteries of Righteousness written by Walter T. Wilson and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2013-03-01 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the Christian church moved from its inception in an Eastern/Oriental culture westward across Asia Minor (Turkey) into Greco-Roman culture with primarily a Western philosophy, theology, and values, Jesus' message and Paul's teachings began to be interpreted according to those cultural norms. While Paul kept calling his churches back to their Jewish roots and Eastern values, the Jewish voice was lost when the Jerusalem church dispersed as Israel fell during the Jewish Revolt of 66-73 AD. The temple was destroyed, its clergy silenced, and Judaism seemed irrelevant to the growing Christian church. The church had become primarily Gentile in theology and philosophy and its Hebrew foundation was largely forgotten and lost. In Beyond Christian Folk Religion, Beckstrom, brings the reader back to Jesus' roots (Romans 11:17-23) and to the core of Paul's message.
Download or read book From Phenomenology to Thought Errancy and Desire written by B.E. Babich and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-04-17 with total page 625 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For both continental and analytic styles of philosophy, the thought of Martin Heidegger must be counted as one of the most important influences in contemporary philosophy. In this book, essays by internationally noted scholars, ranging from David B. Allison to Slavoj Zizek, honour the interpretive contributions of William J. Richardson's pathbreaking Heidegger: Through Phenomenology to Thought. The essays move from traditional phenomenology to the idea of essential (another) thinking, the questions of translation and existential expressions of the turn of Heidegger's thought, the intersection of politics and language, the philosophic significance of Jacques Lacan, and several essays on science and technology. All show the influence of Richardson's first study. A valuable emphasis appears in Richardson's interpretation of Heidegger's conception of die Irre, interpreted as Errancy, set in its current locus in a discussion of Heidegger's debacle with the political in his involvement with National Socialism.

Download or read book Young Schopenhauer written by Alessandro Novembre and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2023-10-04 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a detailed reconstruction of the origins of Schopenhauer's philosophy and its inherent aporias. It is divided into four parts. The first section delves into the pietistic upbringing of young Schopenhauer and his introduction to philosophy through the teachings of G.E. Schulze, as well as his study of Plato, Schelling, and Kant. Faced with the "negative" outcomes of Kant's criticism, particularly the unknowability of the thing-in-itself, young Schopenhauer initially engaged with Fichte and Schelling (this is covered in the second part of the volume). However, Schopenhauer formed the opinion that these two philosophers, instead of upholding and expanding upon Kant's ideas, ultimately diverge from them. That notwithstanding, he implicitly inherited certain pivotal concepts from Fichte and Schelling. The third part explores Schopenhauer's initial endeavor to formulate a new metaphysics after Kant, known as the theory of "better consciousness." In the fourth part, the book demonstrates how the internal contradictions within that theory and Schopenhauer's transformative encounter with Indian wisdom (Hinduism and Buddhism) lead him to abandon his first attempt at a system and develop his metaphysics of will. The last and most substantial chapter of the book focuses on the author's analysis of the inherent aporias within Schopenhauer's mature system, approaching them from a genetic perspective.

This volume reconsiders some of Nietzsche’s writings on economics and the science of state, pioneering a line of research up to now unavailable in English. The authors intend to provoke conversation and inspire research on the role that this much misunderstood philosopher and cultural critic has played – or should play – in the history of economics.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle.
