Book excerpt: BLACK HEART'S END: Light Prevails in the Darkness of the Deadly Relationship By: Jamie Reynolds In this continuation of The Black Heart, we find Janie and Lolly each deciding on their own personal tactic in searching for information regarding the death of Lolly's mother, Mandy. Now, we see two young women drawn to separate and unknown territories as sources for their efforts. Each have their own motives and will have to use new and different methods to retrieve their desired information. Lolly is pulled to her mother's roots in Mexico, while Janie is pulled northward in California-where Mandy and her family had relocated and spent more than several years prior to the abrupt end to her young life. Both women are certain there will be more than a few who knew Mandy in either location, and someone may have a hint or definitive information regarding her death. Janie has also learned that Mandy's fiancé has been incarcerated as a suspect. In Janie's mind, she still believes there is a good reason that her black heart necklace, gifted from Alex, points to evidence of his guilt; however, her necklace is missing. BLACK HEART'S END revolves around Janie's and Lolly's painstaking travels and meetings with some who provide assistance and others who obstruct their path and approach with complications and danger. Will Janie and/or Lolly gain any perspectives and survive their personal treks...?

Book Resolving The Cholesterol Controversy The Scientists Who Proved The Lipid Hypothesis Of Causation Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Heart Disease

Download or read book Resolving The Cholesterol Controversy The Scientists Who Proved The Lipid Hypothesis Of Causation Of Atherosclerosis And Coronary Heart Disease written by Gilbert R Thompson and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2023-06-20 with total page 247 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Resolving the Cholesterol Controversy recounts the science and scientific personalities behind the chain of discoveries upon which the lipid hypothesis of atherosclerosis was built. The narrative covers a period of just under 100 years, starting with Anitschkow's experiments with cholesterol-fed rabbits in 1913, and recounts the endeavours and achievements of the leading actors in this protracted scientific drama. The cast is drawn from an extraordinary variety of scientific disciplines: pathology, biophysics, epidemiology, nutrition, cardiology, lipidology, genetics, microbiology, pharmacology, and clinical trial design. Most of the scientists believed that cholesterol played a causal role in atherosclerosis and cardiovascular disease, but there were some who dissented strongly from this conclusion. The breadth of scientific disciplines involved in proving the lipid hypothesis is matched by the geographical spread of the participants. Anitschkow worked in Russia, Endo discovered the first statin in Japan, their commercial development by Merck took place in the USA and evidence of benefit from lowering cholesterol came from trials conducted in Scandinavia and the UK. The subsequent meta-analysis of these statin trials in 2005 proved the validity of the lipid hypothesis beyond any doubt. The history of how this all came about and its impact upon health policy and medical practice is recalled here in Resolving the Cholesterol Controversy.

Book Applied Kinesiology Revised Edition

Download or read book Applied Kinesiology Revised Edition written by Robert Frost, Ph.D. and published by North Atlantic Books. This book was released on 2013-08-20 with total page 345 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This update of the bestselling book on Applied Kinesiology introduces a diagnostic method that uses manual muscle testing to assess the body's structure, chemistry, and psyche Manual muscle testing is a standard medical diagnostic technique that utilizes full-strength contraction of the muscle tested. An Applied Kinesiology (AK) muscle test uses this method to not only assess the general integrity of the muscle but to also reveal structural, chemical, and mental weaknesses. To perform an AK muscle test, the practitioner applies light pressure that the client then resists. If the client cannot resist the pressure, the muscle ‘tests weak,’ indicating a structural problem or imbalance that needs to be resolved. Further applications include working with a muscle that tests strong ‘in the clear’ as a diagnostic tool to determine the effect of stimuli including touch, nutrients, medicines, allergens, emotions, poor posture, and stressful memories. Opening with a detailed description of the history and applications of Applied Kinesiology, this book covers the theory, procedure, and interpretation of the muscle test, including diagnosis and correction techniques for areas of weakness. Thirty-three muscle tests for different areas of the body are accompanied by instructive photographs with superimposed anatomical drawings that demonstrate the method and various treatment points. A useful appendix includes a glossary of anatomical terms and special vocabulary; a step-by-step plan for conducting a session; and a list of contacts and sources for Applied Kinesiology materials. Offering a new preface and additional techniques in the areas of manual medicine, orthomolecular medicine, and psychology, Applied Kinesiology, Revised Edition shares the author's discoveries as well as anecdotal observations to stimulate further research. Table of Contents 1. From Biomechanics to Applied Kinesiology 2. Scientific Principles of Applied Kinesiology 3. The Muscle Test 4. Pretests 5. Diagnosis and Correction Techniques 6. Muscle Tests 7. Applied Kinesiology and Manual Medicine 8. Applied Kinesiology and Orthomolecular Medicine 9. Applied Kinesiology and the Psyche 10. Personal Discoveries and Garnered Methods for Further Consideration
