Book Handbook of Electrolyte Solutions Parts A and B

Download or read book Handbook of Electrolyte Solutions Parts A and B written by V.M.M. Lobo and published by Elsevier Science. This book was released on 1990-08-05 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The development of science and technology demands precise data concerning the fundamental thermodynamic and transport properties of ionic solutions. Many fields, such as corrosion, pollution, food technology, biochemical phenomena, rates of reactions, etc., which involve such solutions, have been moving towards a more scientific treatment. Accordingly, the relevant fundamental parameters need to be known over a wider scale. Whereas some recent fields of science have information concentrated in a few specialist journals covering only a short span of time, the basic thermodynamic and transport properties of aqueous solutions are scattered among hundreds of different journals over a period of many decades. To aid the specialist in the search for one of these properties, the author has compiled comprehensive data from the literature on 1. Density. 2. Viscosity. 3. Conductance. 4. Transport numbers. 5. Diffusion coefficients. 6. Activity coefficients (and osmotic coefficients) of aqueous solutions of binary inorganic electrolytes, listed in alphabetical order according to the chemical formula. A list of electrolytes by alphabetical order of name in English is given in appendix I. All properties of a single solute are grouped together, thus forming a chapter, divided in sections according to temperature, e.g. Section 0 has data of the above six properties measured at 0°C, below 0°C or up to 2.4°C. Section 5, 10, 15, 20, 25, 30, 35, 40, 45 have data measured at the indicated t temperature or within the range t - 2.5°Cor=tor=t+2.4°C; Section 50 has data measured at 50°C or at temperatures higher than 47.5°C. brbrbrpbrThe present work is of immense value to those interested in readily assessing all the data of a single solute at a certain temperature, and appropriate indices easily supply the information of a certain property in every electrolyte.brbr

Book The Physical Basis of Thermodynamics

Download or read book The Physical Basis of Thermodynamics written by Pascal Richet and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 462 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Given that thermodynamics books are not a rarity on the market, why would an additional one be useful? The answer is simple: at any level, thermodynamics is usually taught as a somewhat abstruse discipline where many students get lost in a maze of difficult concepts. However, thermodynamics is not as intricate a subject as most people feel. This book fills a niche between elementary textbooks and mathematically oriented treatises, and provides readers with a distinct approach to the subject. As indicated by the title, this book explains thermodynamic phenomena and concepts in physical terms before proceeding to focus on the requisite mathematical aspects. It focuses on the effects of pressure, temperature and chemical composition on thermodynamic properties and places emphasis on rapidly evolving fields such as amorphous materials, metastable phases, numerical simulations of microsystems and high-pressure thermodynamics. Topics like redox reactions are dealt with in less depth, due to the fact that there is already much literature available. Without requiring a background in quantum mechanics, this book also illustrates the main practical applications of statistical thermodynamics and gives a microscopic interpretation of temperature, pressure and entropy. This book is perfect for undergraduate and graduate students who already have a basic knowledge of thermodynamics and who wish to truly understand the subject and put it in a broader physical perspective. The book is aimed not at theoretical physicists, but rather at practitioners with a variety of backgrounds from physics to biochemistry for whom thermodynamics is a tool which would be better used if better understood.

Book Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium Part 1 Physical and Chemical Fundamentals

Download or read book Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium Part 1 Physical and Chemical Fundamentals written by Chaim T. Horovitz and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 334 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium gathers together existing knowledge about scandium and yttrium from a wide variety of disciplines. Part 1 will present a comparative study of the physical and chemical properties of scandium and yttrium, looking at both their similarities and their differences. (Part 2 will address the biochemical aspects of these two elements, and the various medical and environmental applications.) While these elements are relatively rare in nature, these books will show that they have unusual physical and chemical properties, and a disproportionate number of important applications. Improved analytical techniques have revealed that scandium and yttrium are present throughout living matter, even though only a relatively limited number of species have been analyzed so far. This fact of course has far-ranging implications for biological and environmental concerns. Part 1 also contains a discussion of the interactions of scandium and yttrium with molecules of biological interest, such as organic acids, carbohydrates, proteins, nucleotides, and other biologically active molecules. The major impacts of scandium and yttrium in science, technology, and medicine will be of interest to a wide variety of researchers, including geochemists, inorganic and organic chemists, clinical biochemists, and those specializing in environmental protection. Biochemistry of Scandium and Yttrium, Part 1 and Part 2 will be especially welcome because the last book published on the biochemistry of scandium appeared over 20 years ago, and the only book mentioning the biochemistry of yttrium came out in 1990.

Book Aqueous Systems at Elevated Temperatures and Pressures

Download or read book Aqueous Systems at Elevated Temperatures and Pressures written by Roberto Fernandez-Prini and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2004-07-06 with total page 767 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The International Association for the Properties of Water and Steam (IAPWS) has produced this book in order to provide an accessible, up-to-date overview of important aspects of the physical chemistry of aqueous systems at high temperatures and pressures. These systems are central to many areas of scientific study and industrial application, including electric power generation, industrial steam systems, hydrothermal processing of materials, geochemistry, and environmental applications. The authors’ goal is to present the material at a level that serves both the graduate student seeking to learn the state of the art, and also the industrial engineer or chemist seeking to develop additional expertise or to find the data needed to solve a specific problem. The wide range of people for whom this topic is important provides a challenge. Advanced work in this area is distributed among physical chemists, chemical engineers, geochemists, and other specialists, who may not be aware of parallel work by those outside their own specialty. The particular aspects of high-temperature aqueous physical chemistry of interest to one industry may be irrelevant to another; yet another industry might need the same basic information but in a very different form. To serve all these constituencies, the book includes several chapters that cover the foundational thermophysical properties (such as gas solubility, phase behavior, thermodynamic properties of solutes, and transport properties) that are of interest across numerous applications. The presentation of these topics is intended to be accessible to readers from a variety of backgrounds. Other chapters address fundamental areas of more specialized interest, such as critical phenomena and molecular-level solution structure. Several chapters are more application-oriented, addressing areas such as power-cycle chemistry and hydrothermal synthesis. As befits the variety of interests addressed, some chapters provide more theoretical guidance while others, such as those on acid/base equilibria and the solubilities of metal oxides and hydroxides, emphasize experimental techniques and data analysis. - Covers both the theory and applications of all Hydrothermal solutions - Provides an accessible, up-to-date overview of important aspects of the physical chemistry of aqueous systems at high temperatures and pressures - The presentation of the book is understandable to readers from a variety of backgrounds

  • Pages : 347 pages

Download or read book Specific Ion Effects written by Werner Kunz and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2010 with total page 347 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Specific ion effects are important in numerous fields of science and technology. They have been discussed for over 100 years, ever since the pioneering work done by Franz Hofmeister and his group in Prague. Over the last decades, hundreds of examples have been published and periodically explanations have been proposed. However, it is only recently that a profound understanding of the basic effects and their reasons could be achieved. Today, we are not far from a general explanation of specific ion effects. This book summarizes the main new ideas that have come up in the last ten years. In this book, the efforts of theoreticians are substantially supported by the experimental results stemming from new and exciting techniques. Both the new theoretical concepts and the experimental landmarks are collected and critically discussed by eminent scientists and well-known specialists in this field. Beyond the rigorous explanations, guidelines are given to non-specialists in order to help them understand the general rules governing specific ion effects in chemistry, biology, physics and engineering.
