Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Handbook to Cotton Spinning: Compiled for the General Use of Young Carders, Spinning Overlookers, and All Students of Cotton Spinning The first thing the reader should do in practice is to see that all the machinery be well balanced and all shafts as true as possible if the machines are not so, there is a continual shaking and vibrating of the machines, which will soon run them down and add to the work of the engine. The blowing-room machinery Should be kept well Oiled, clean, and in proper order, on account Of the high speed; the same with the cardroom and Spinning machinery. If the rollers are not kept nicely Oiled, clean, and in proper order, they will cut the Sliver and yarn, and therefore bad work and dissatisfaction will be the result; but by attending to these little but important matters, he does not see much difficulty in working machinery satisfactorily. Book Cotton Mill Handbook

Download or read book Cotton Mill Handbook written by Textile World and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-06 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cotton Mill Handbook: For Superintendents and Overseers in Cotton Yarn and Cloth Mills The sizes of yarns are designated by the terms count, cut, run, hank, skein, dram, grain, etc., all of which are based upon two elementary principles; i.e., weight and length. Each term represents a certain length of yarn for a fixed' weight, or vice versa; but unfortunately there are difierent standards of weights and measures, which result in a great deal of confusion, although this is less in the cotton industry than in others. The largest variety of terms is found in the woolen industry. In the United States we have woolen cut, run, grain, etc., when all may be reduced to a common basis. There is no doubt that the adoption of an international standard would benefit the textile industry, but which standard to adopt is a question on which manufacturers disagree. It is necessary to familiarize oneself With the standard numbers of the various yarns; also, as in the case of woolen yarns, where different standard numbers are used for the various terms, it is well to be familiar with the standard number of each term, as by this means a great deal of confusion will be avoided. Book Yarn Preparation

Download or read book Yarn Preparation written by John A. Iredale and published by Small-Scale Textiles. This book was released on 1992 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost all fabrics, whether woven or knitted, are produced from spun thread. However, this thread or yarn, produced by the spinning operation, either by a hand spinner using the simplest drop spindle or spinning wheel, or spun on the latest automated spinning frame, is rarely in a form suitable to be used immediately for producing a fabric. A broad range of tasks must be undertaken before the actual fabric production is reached. "Yarn Preparation" is concerned with the preparation of yarns which have been spun from staple fibres, and describes the post-spinning processes prior to fabric manufacture, such as yarn doubling, winding and spinning. Covers the operations to consider when producing a fabric by even the most basic of techniques. The information on basic processes, machinery and equipment should assist those people involved in the production of fabrics by showing ways to improve the quality to the end product. Includes a list of suppliers, sources of further information and a reading list. This is a valuable book which fills the need for a practical manual specifically about yarn preparation. Much has been published about the main textile areas of yarn manufacture and fabric production (both weaving and knitting), because yarn preparation tends to be a series of link operations, there have been very few books specifically directed to this area of processing. The "Small-Scale Textiles" series aims to present basic information about all aspects of small-scale textile manufacture from raw rmaterials to finished products, and will be of use to fieldworkers, development agencies, and those starting small-scale manufacture or attempting to improve or extend manufacture.
