Book excerpt: This volume and its companion volume includes the edited versions of the principal lectures and selected papers presented at the NATO Advanced Study Institute on Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. The Institute was held in the Department of Civil Engineering at Heriot-Watt University, Edinburgh from June 25th to July 6th 1989 and was attended by eighty participants from Universities and Research Institutes around the world. A number of practising civil and structural engineers also attended. The lectures and papers have been divided into two volumes to reflect the dual themes of the Institute namely Optimization and Decision Support Systems in Civil Engineering. Planning for this ASI commenced in late 1986 when Andrew Templeman and I discussed developments in the use of the systems approach in civil engineering. A little later it became clear that much of this approach could be realised through the use of knowledge-based systems and artificial intelligence techniques. Both Don Grierson and John Gero indicated at an early stage how important it would be to include knowledge-based systems within the scope of the Institute. The title of the Institute could have been: 'Civil Engineering Systems' as this would have reflected the range of systems applications to civil engineering problems considered by the Institute. These volumes therefore reflect the full range of these problems including: structural analysis and design; water resources engineering; geotechnical engineering; transportation and environmental engineering.

Book excerpt: First published in 1965, this book was written in response to the considerable changes that had taken place in shipbuilding techniques since 1945 and to the new scientific methods that were being increasingly adopted in a strongly competitive market. It describes the advances which had been made in one field of the design of ship structures, a field also of importance in the design of bridges and other rigid structures on land. A grillage is a structure of intersecting beams, usually attached to one side of a continuous plate panel, which is loaded normal to its surface. The decks, bottoms and bulkheads (vertical divisions) of ships are usually flat grillages, and this form of construction is also commonly used in the decks of bridges. The methods of plastic analysis are not directly applicable to plated grillage structures and Mr Clarkson has therefore discussed only elastic methods of design.

Among them are controlled enumeration methods, subgradient approach, genetic programming, multicriteria optimization, neural nets etc. Along with its tradition of promoting and supporting new im portant fields of research in mechanics and its application, General Assembly of IUTAM decided in 1990 to support the Sumposium. It is worthy to note that this is the second IUTAM Symposium on structural optimization, organized in Poland. The first one was held in Warsaw twenty years ago and was organized by Profe ssors Sawczuk and Mroz. It was devoted mostly to problems with continuous design variables. The Symposium which gathered 40 participants from 12 coun tries was sponsored by several institutions listed below. However support by IUTAM should be specially appreciated. It helped se veral scientists to contribute to the Symposium which other way wouldn't attend the meeting.
