Book excerpt: The Nazi regime in Germany was terrible enough without even accounting for the policy of collaboration. So what extra does collaboration say about Hitler and his plans for Europe? Peter Davies explores the mindset and political attitudes of Hitler and also many other controversial pro-Nazi leaders in Western Europe, Scandanavia, Central and Eastern Europe, and also beyond. Delving into four different "types" of collaboration: political, financial, the Holocaust, and collaboration at a social level, he asks some difficult questions. The story of collaboration is brought up to date, assessing both the legacy and its contemporary parallels.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scope: October 1940 Outside Of the human factor, _ there is an economic factor to be considered when we learn that about 90 of all failures in the first and second grades of the Public Schools are due to reading disabilities. Reading is, therefore, in the foreground of educational considerations, as is evidenced by the fact that a large part of the educational research program is devoted to the investigation of reading, How do we read? Of course, reading is a complex process, not only determined by the images received through the eyes, but mainly by the mental ability of recognizing, classify ing and interpreting these images and thus translating them into knowledge. However, the receiving stations for all readable material are the eyes. It is, therefore, important to train the reading eyes to the level of the mental capacity so that the mechanics of reading is not lagging behind the mentality of the reader. It is very similar to the act of playing the piano. The greatest musical genius can only play the piano after he learns the finger move ments and his playing ability depends upon his technique plus his musical comprehension. Book Vanishing Vienna

  • Author : Frances Tanzer
  • Publisher : University of Pennsylvania Press

Download or read book Vanishing Vienna written by Frances Tanzer and published by University of Pennsylvania Press. This book was released on 2024-06-11 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In Vanishing Vienna historian Frances Tanzer traces the reconstruction of Viennese culture from the 1938 German annexation through the early 1960s. The book reveals continuity in Vienna’s cultural history across this period and a framework for interpreting Viennese culture that relies on antisemitism, philosemitism, and a related discourse of Jewish presence and absence. This observation demands a new chronology of cultural reconstruction that links the Nazi and postwar years, and a new geography that includes the history of refugees from Nazi Vienna. Rather than presenting the Nazi, exile, and postwar periods as discrete chapters of Vienna’s history, Tanzer argues that they are part of a continuous spectrum of cultural evolution—the result of which was the creation of a coherent Austrian identity and culture that emerged by the 1950s. As she shows, antisemitism and philosemitism were not contradictory forces in post-Nazi Austrian culture. They were deeply interconnected aspirations in a city where nostalgia for the past dominated cultural reconstruction efforts and supported seemingly contradictory impulses. Viennese nostalgia at times concealed the perpetuation of antisemitic fantasies of the city without Jews. At the same time, the postwar desire to return to a pre-Nazi past relied upon notions of Austrian culture that Austrian Jews perfected in exile, as well as on the symbolic remigration of a mostly imagined “Jewish” culture now taxed with redeeming Austria in the aftermath of the Holocaust. From this perspective, philosemitism is much more than a simple inversion of antisemitism—instead, Tanzer argues, philosemitism, problematic as it may be, defines Vienna in the era of postwar reconstruction. In this way, Vanishing Vienna uncovers a rarely discussed phenomenon of the aftermath of the Holocaust—a society that consumes, redefines, and bestows symbolic meaning on the victims in their absence.

Book Healing Henan

    Book Details:
  • Author : Sonya Grypma
  • Publisher : UBC Press
  • Release : 2008-07-01
  • ISBN : 0774858214
  • Pages : 314 pages

Download or read book Healing Henan written by Sonya Grypma and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2008-07-01 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While volumes have been written about the Protestant missionary movement in China, scant attention has been paid to the role of nursing and nurses in these missions. Set against a backdrop of war and revolution, Healing Henan brings sixty years of missionary nursing out of the shadows by examining how Canadian nurses shaped health care in the province of Henan and how China, in turn, influenced the nature of missionary nursing. From the time Presbyterian (later United Church) missionaries arrived in China in 1888 until the abrupt closure of the North China Mission in 1947, Canadian nurses were ubiquitous in Henan. As China underwent a tumultuous transition from dynastic kingdom to independent republic, Canadian nurses advanced a version of hospital-based nursing education and practice that rivalled modern nursing care in Canada. In Healing Henan, Sonya Grypma offers a highly readable and fresh perspective on China missions and the global expansion of professional nursing. As the first comprehensive study of missionary nursing in China, it will be of particular interest to nurses and missionaries, and to historians of Canada, China, nursing, medicine, women's work, and missions.
