Book Multiple Populisms

Download or read book Multiple Populisms written by Paul Blokker and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-17 with total page 266 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a comprehensive interpretation of the multiple manifestations of populism using Italy, the only country amongst consolidated constitutional democracies in which populist political forces have been in government on various occasions since the early 1990s, as the starting point and benchmark. Populism is a complex, multi-faceted political phenomenon which redefines many of the essential characteristics of democracy; participation, representation, and political conflict. This book considers contemporary versions of populism that pose a real challenge to representative and constitutional democracy. Contributors provide an integrative interpretation of populism and analyse its principal historical, social and politico-legal variables to provide a multi-dimensional reflection on the concept of populism, comprehensive analysis of the populist phenomenon and a theoretical and comparative perspective on the diverse political experiences of populism. Based on conceptual and interdisciplinary reflections from expert authors, this book will be of great interest to scholars and post-graduate students of cultural studies, European studies, political sociology, political science, comparative politics, political philosophy, and political theory with an interest in a comparative and interdisciplinary theory of populism and its manifestations.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Political parties are the defining institutions of representative democracy and the darlings of political science, their governing and electoral functions among the chief concerns of the field. Yet they are often presented as grubby arenas of ambition, or worse. This book is a vigorous defence of their virtues.

Book Errand Into the Wilderness of Mirrors

Download or read book Errand Into the Wilderness of Mirrors written by Michael Graziano and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2023-08-04 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Reveals the previous underexplored influence of religious thought in building the foundations of the CIA. Michael Graziano’s intriguing book fuses two landmark titles in American history: Perry Miller’s Errand into the Wilderness (1956), about the religious worldview of the early Massachusetts colonists, and David Martin’s Wilderness of Mirrors (1980), about the dangers and delusions inherent to the Central Intelligence Agency. Fittingly, Errand into the Wilderness of Mirrors investigates the dangers and delusions that ensued from the religious worldview of the early molders of the Central Intelligence Agency. Graziano argues that the religious approach to intelligence by key OSS and CIA figures like “Wild” Bill Donovan and Edward Lansdale was an essential, and overlooked, factor in establishing the agency’s concerns, methods, and understandings of the world. In a practical sense, this was because the Roman Catholic Church already had global networks of people and safe places that American agents could use to their advantage. But more tellingly, Graziano shows, American intelligence officers were overly inclined to view powerful religions and religious figures through the frameworks of Catholicism. As Graziano makes clear, these misconceptions often led to tragedy and disaster on an international scale. By braiding the development of the modern intelligence agency with the story of postwar American religion, Errand into the Wilderness of Mirrors delivers a provocative new look at a secret driver of one of the major engines of American power.

Book Representative Democracy

Download or read book Representative Democracy written by Nadia Urbinati and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2008-09-15 with total page 341 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: It is usually held that representative government is not strictly democratic, since it does not allow the people themselves to directly make decisions. But here, taking as her guide Thomas Paine’s subversive view that “Athens, by representation, would have surpassed her own democracy,” Nadia Urbinati challenges this accepted wisdom, arguing that political representation deserves to be regarded as a fully legitimate mode of democratic decision making—and not just a pragmatic second choice when direct democracy is not possible. As Urbinati shows, the idea that representation is incompatible with democracy stems from our modern concept of sovereignty, which identifies politics with a decision maker’s direct physical presence and the immediate act of the will. She goes on to contend that a democratic theory of representation can and should go beyond these identifications. Political representation, she demonstrates, is ultimately grounded in a continuum of influence and power created by political judgment, as well as the way presence through ideas and speech links society with representative institutions. Deftly integrating the ideas of such thinkers as Rousseau, Kant, Emmanuel Joseph Sieyès, Paine, and the Marquis de Condorcet with her own, Urbinati constructs a thought-provoking alternative vision of democracy.

Book Literature and Race in the Democracy of Goods

Download or read book Literature and Race in the Democracy of Goods written by Christopher Chen and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2022-03-24 with total page 233 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Examining three literary traditions – post-1960 Asian American, Asian Canadian and Black experimental poetry – this book reframes contemporary scholarly accounts of post-war North American comparative racial group formation, demonstrating how such poetry investigates contemporary Black-Asian relations and maps the complex co-constitution of race and capitalism at different spatial scales. Offering extended close readings of contemporary Black, Asian American and Asian Canadian experimental poets such as Myung Mi Kim, Erica Hunt, Larissa Lai and Ed Roberson, this book argues that these writers redefine race as a changing and politically contested form of constraint and possibility powerfully shaped by economic history and capitalist globalization. This study retheorizes some basic terms of analysis of contemporary US poetry and poetics, critical race and ethnic studies, racial capitalism and contemporary theories of comparative and relational racialization.

Book excerpt: From his first readers to the present, Friedrich Nietzsche has found supporters and detractors on every point of the political spectrum. In the introduction to this volume, Tracy Strong analyzes the reasons for this diversity of reception. They are to be found, not only in modern social and political developments but, more importantly, in the purpose and style of Nietzsche's writing. The volume includes selections from all major interpretive schools, including some from the early part of the twentieth century, an appendix presenting a new translation of one of Nietzsche's most controversial writings, The Greek State, and a lengthy bibliography of writings on Nietzsche and politics. The essays gathered together in this volume are the work of the most seminal Nietzsche scholars and, taken together, provide a comprehensive study of Nietzsche's political thought.
