Book Future Forms and Design For Sustainable Cities

Download or read book Future Forms and Design For Sustainable Cities written by Mike Jenks and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2006-08-11 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Concentrating on the planning and design of cities, the three sections take a logical route through the discussion from the broad considerations at regional and city scale, to the larger city at high and lower densities through to design considerations on the smaller block scale. Key design issues such as access to facilities, access for sunlight, life cycle analyses, and the impact of communications on urban design are tackled, and in conclusion, the research is compared to large scale design examples that have been proposed and/or implemented over the past decade to give a vision for the future that might be achievable.

Book The Futures of the City Region

Download or read book The Futures of the City Region written by Michael Neuman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Does the ‘city region’ constitute a new departure in urbanisation? If so, what are the key elements of that departure? The realities of the urban in the 21st century are increasingly complex and polychromatic. The rise of global networks enabled by supranational administrations, both governmental and corporate, strongly influences and structures the management of urban life. How we conceive the city region has intellectual and practical consequences. First, in helping us grasp rapidly changing realities; and second in facilitating the flow of resources, ideas and learning to enhance the quality of life of citizens. Two themes interweave through this collection, within this broad palette. First are the socio-spatial constructs and their relationship to the empirical evidence of change in the physical and functional aspects of urban form. Second is what they mean for the spatial scales of governance. This latter theme explores territorially based understandings of intervention and the changing set of political concerns in selected case studies. In efforts to address these issues and improve upon knowledge, this collection brings together international scholars building new data-driven, cross-disciplinary theories to create new images of the city region that may prove to supplement if not supplant old ones. The book illustrates the dialectical interplay of theory and fact, time and space, and spatial and institutional which expands on our intellectual grasp of the theoretical debates on ‘city-regions’ through ‘practical knowing’, citing examples from Europe, the United States, Australasia, and beyond. This book was originally published as a Special Issue of Regional Studies.

Book The Future of Air Transport

Download or read book The Future of Air Transport written by Great Britain. Department for Transport and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2003 with total page 184 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This White Paper sets out a strategic policy framework for the development of airport capacity in the UK over the next 30 years. Chapters focus on the following: the strategic framework; the environmental impacts; the air transport sector. It also looks at individual regions and the impact for them, including: Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, also the North of England, the Midlands, the South West and finally the South East. The framework itself can be used by public bodies, air operators and airlines for future planning applications. It also sets out the Government and devolved administrations' conclusions on the case for future airport expansion, taking into account the large consultation exercise of over half million respondents. This paper provides reasons why airport capacity should be expanded, but recommends a balanced approach to the issue. Among the reasons are: the economic importance of air travel for the country’s economy and the increased desire amongst the population for foreign travel, which should be balanced against minimizing, where possible the environmental effects to an area where airports are situated. These are some of the main cases for future development following a full environmental assessment: for Scotland: an additional runway at Edinburgh Airport; substantial terminal development at Glasgow Airport. For Wales: further terminal development needed at Cardiff airport. For Northern Ireland: development of increased capacity at Belfast. For the North of England: additional terminal capacity provided at Manchester Airport and development of increased capacity at Liverpool John Lennon Airport. For the Midlands: additional runway for Birmingham. For South West England: expansion of Bristol Airport. For South East England: a new runway at Stansted; further development of Heathrow supported, including a further runway and additional terminal capacity. Some options though are not to be followed through, including: two new runways at Gatwick, a development of a second runway at Luton, and a new airport at Cliffe, a new airport of central Scotland, and a new airport at Rugby.

Book Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment in Practice

Download or read book Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment in Practice written by Joe Weston and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2014-06-11 with total page 223 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) is a fast-growing field of land-use planning affecting many disciplines. At present, UK Government legislation requires EIA for certain types of development. Subject to a further new European directive, an EIA will be required for all policies, plans and programmes. Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment in Practice provides a practical introduction to the subject and relates the theory to the practice through extensive use of case studies. Edited by Joe Weston, the book draws on contributions from a number of practising experts in the field and covers topics such as: assessing the need for EIAs; the environmental team; scoping and public participation; internal and external consultation; local lobbying; local authority review and decision-making; public enquiries; monitoring the impacts; pollution control; and the lessons to be learned. Planning and Environmental Impact Assessment in Practice provides a practical introduction to EIA for final year undergraduate and postgraduate MSc courses in planning, geography, civil engineering, building and estate management, and development.

Book The Future of Local Economic Development

Download or read book The Future of Local Economic Development written by Ines Newman and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2013-09-13 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book looks at the future role of local economic development. Once New Labour came to power in 1997, they sought a third way between the new right agenda of Thatcherism with its attempts to reduce the role of the local state and foster a free market and the left’s attempts to take more control over the local economy in the interest of workers. In July 2007, Gordon Brown’s government published the 'Review of Sub-national Economic Development and Regeneration'. This book argues that competitiveness and neo-liberalism, or increased market domination over an ever wider range of social relations, have in reality dominated New Labour’s policies. Yet a number of contradictions remain as New Labour continues to seek a reduction in poverty and regional and local disparities. The book analyses the changes that will result from further market domination under the Sub-national Review but also the opportunities that will arise for local economic development agents, particularly those with a concern for social justice. It looks specifically at regional and sub-regional strategy making; partnership, networking and building institutional capacity; local labour market policy and policy towards cities. An additional feature of the book is that several authors draw on international comparisons. This book was published as a special issue of Local Economy.

Book excerpt: In this perfect companion to London: The Biography, Peter Ackroyd once again delves into the hidden byways of history, describing the river's endless allure in a journey overflowing with characters, incidents, and wry observations. Thames: The Biography meanders gloriously, rather like the river itself. In short, lively chapters Ackroyd writes about connections between the Thames and such historical figures as Julius Caesar and Henry VIII, and offers memorable portraits of the ordinary men and women who depend upon the river for their livelihoods. The Thames as a source of artistic inspiration comes brilliantly to life as Ackroyd invokes Chaucer, Shakespeare, Turner, Shelley, and other writers, poets, and painters who have been enchanted by its many moods and colors.
