The paper explores more on Blockchain technology including benefits, impacts, risks in implementing the Blockchain based electronic voting system, and touch upon the current e-voting projects. Finally, the author describes the proposed model for E-Voting system and concludes this report. Voting is an essential tool for any democratic government, it’s the most important factor which makes government for the people and by the people, until now the paper ballot has been used for voting in most countries of the world where voters mark their vote on the paper and put it in the ballot box and at the end of election the votes are counted, but the biggest disadvantage of this system is that it cannot be auto-mated and voters have to physically go to the location for voting that makes the entire process very time consuming and expensive, also digital ballots are vulnerable to hackers and results can be compromised, with the Blockchain technology and cryptography any user can login in GUI using the credentials provided by national election authority and cast their vote by signing it with their private key and trusted miners could verify whether the votes are legit or not by using voter’s public keys that makes the entire e-voting process transparent, cost effective, safe and secure. The proposed system consists of a GUI, an application interface, central database, Blockchain network. Pre-election registration process, voting, counting, final election results and auditing were explained. The consensus algorithm was proof-of-work, all the election properties such as validity, privacy, individuality, flexibility etc. were satisfied.

Book excerpt: Blockchain has been one of the hottest topics among the state-of-the-art technologies. As the enabling technology for Bitcoin, the pioneering cryptocurrency, blockchain is an append-only distributed ledger that is virtually impossible to attack. Hence, blockchain holds great promises as the fundamental technology to enable Internet-based electronic voting. However, Internet-based voting has additional requirements than what monetary transactions such as Bitcoin have to offer. In this thesis, we discuss the key differences of a blockchain-based voting system with digital currencies. In this context we also highlight the requirements, review existing proposed solutions, and outline possible improvements. Specifically, we propose several schemes on how to tackle various issues such as authentication, privacy, transparency, scalability, safety, as well as several other practical aspects of the platform. Most importantly, a blockchain-based voting system needs to ensure that the prospect of tampering with the election result is to a large extent eliminated. At the same time, the voting platform should have proper performance characteristics, i.e. sufficient throughput, for a voting of large magnitude such as a presidential election. Being heavily linked together, security and performance should be investigated in a unified framework to capture the interaction effects between the two. To address this concern, for the first time, we will study the performance and security implications of the blockchain voting system in a quantitative manner, using a blockchain simulator developed by researchers at Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, ETH Zurich. In our analysis, we will specifically investigate the stale block rate and relative mining share of the dishonest network, as the central security measures, as a function of important network parameters that determine the throughput of the network, i.e. block size and block interval. Ultimately, we focus on selfish mining and eclipse attacks as the most critical threats to the integrity of the blockchain voting in order to find the optimal network parameters.

Based on the constraints we observed, we suggest a unique electronic voting system based on blockchain. More widely, this study analyses the possibilities of distributed ledger technology by way of presentation of an internet voting system using blockchain technology, specifically the election process and the implementation of a blockchain-based application that enhances security and lowers the cost of holding a countrywide election. This paper proposes a new design of the voting system respecting the basic and most significant components such as transparency, secrecy, security, and decentralization, while simultaneously providing the benefit of mobility.
