Book Conservation Biology and Applied Zooarchaeology

Download or read book Conservation Biology and Applied Zooarchaeology written by Steve Wolverton and published by University of Arizona Press. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Until now, the research of applied zooarchaeologists has not had a significant impact on the work of conservation scientists. This book is designed to show how zooarchaeology can productively inform conservation science. Conservation Biology and Applied Zooarchaeology offers a set of case studies that use animal remains from archaeological and paleontological sites to provide information that has direct implications for wildlife management and conservation biology. It introduces conservation biologists to zooarchaeology, a sub-field of archaeology and ethnobiology, and provides a brief historical account of the development of applied zooarchaeology. The case studies, which utilize palaeozoological data, cover a variety of animals and environments, including the marine ecology of shellfish and fish, potential restoration sites for Sandhill Cranes, freshwater mussel biogeography and stream ecology, conservation of terrestrial mammals such as American black bears, and even a consideration of the validity of the Pleistocene “rewilding” movement. The volume closes with an important new essay on the history, value, and application of applied zooarchaeology by R. Lee Lyman, which updates his classic 1996 paper that encouraged zooarchaeologists to apply their findings to present-day environmental challenges. Each case study provides detailed analysis using the approaches of zooarchaeology and concludes with precise implications for conservation biology. Essays also address issues of political and social ecology, which have frequently been missing from the discussions of conservation scientists. As the editors note, all conservation actions occur in economic, social, and political contexts. Until now, however, the management implications of zooarchaeological research have rarely been spelled out so clearly.

Book Fresh Water Mussels Mollusca Bivalvia Unionidae of the Upper Mississippi River Observations at Selected Sites Within the 9 Foot Channel Navigation Project on Behalf of the U S Army

Download or read book Fresh Water Mussels Mollusca Bivalvia Unionidae of the Upper Mississippi River Observations at Selected Sites Within the 9 Foot Channel Navigation Project on Behalf of the U S Army written by Samuel L. H. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 1978 with total page 394 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey of freshwater mussels of the Upper Mississippi River drainage was conducted during the summer and autumn of 1977. Over 8,000 living specimens were gathered and examined during surveillance of more than 40 actual and/or potential dredging sites in the Minnesota and St. Croix Rivers and in almost 20 Upper Mississippi River pools. Dredging and associated activities to maintain the 9-foot navigation channel has caused local mortality of mussels, including endangered species. There are other factors having far greater adverse impact, including wastes from the cities of Minneapolis and St. Paul, agricultural runoff, impoundment of the Upper Mississippi River and encroachment by Corbicula fluminea, the Asiatic Clam. The outlook for a continuing ecosystematic and commercial mussel resource appear to be good. Even certain endangered species (e.g. Lampsilis higginsi) are likely to survive if appropriate measures are taken.

Book An Analysis of Freshwater Mussels Unionidae in the Quiver River and Bogue Phalia Mississippi 1994 95

Download or read book An Analysis of Freshwater Mussels Unionidae in the Quiver River and Bogue Phalia Mississippi 1994 95 written by Andrew C. Miller and published by . This book was released on 1997 with total page 56 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A survey to assess community characteristics, density, population demography of dominant species, and the presence of rare or endangered species of mussels (Family: Unionidae) was conducted in selected reaches of the Quiver River and Bogue Phalia, Mississippi, in 1994 and 1995 for the U.S. Army Engineer District, Vicksburg. Results are being used to assess the economic value of mussels in the project area and to determine the environmental effects of proposed maintenance dredging. The project area included a section of the Quiver River between its confluence with the Big Sunflower River immediately north of Highway 82 in Sunflower County to the Leflore-Tallahatchie county line. In the Bogue Phalia, the study area consisted of a reach between Highway 82 and Rosedale, west-central Bolivar County. Twenty-two species of native freshwater mussels were collected in the Quiver River; 26 sites were sampled using qualitative methods, and a total of 2,238 mussels were collected. The dominant mussel was Amblema p. plicata, which comprised over 67 percent of the mussel fauna. Plectomerus dombeyanus comprised 20 percent of the mussels. Overall species diversity (0.67 to 0.90) was low, mainly because of the dominance of A. p. plicata. Evidence of recent recruitment was low; approximately 7 percent of the species and 0.15 percent of the individuals collected were less than 30 mm total shell length. Overall mean density ranged from less than 8.6 individuals/square meter at River Mile (RM) 6.4 to 92.3 individuals/square meter at RM 19.7.

Book Freshwater Mussels Mollusca Bivalvia Unionidae of the Upper Mississippi River Observations at Selected Sites Within the 9 Foot Navigation Channel Project for the St Paul District United States Army Corps of Engineers 1977 1979 Volume I Text

Download or read book Freshwater Mussels Mollusca Bivalvia Unionidae of the Upper Mississippi River Observations at Selected Sites Within the 9 Foot Navigation Channel Project for the St Paul District United States Army Corps of Engineers 1977 1979 Volume I Text written by Samuel L. H. Fuller and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 196 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The primary objectives of the study were to characterize the present mussel fauna, to compare it to the fauna existing before the 9-foot Navigation Channel Project, and to determine the influence(s) upon mussels by practices of the District's Operations and Maintenance (O & M) activities. The study area was the main channel and main channel borders of the UMR itself from Head of Navigation at river mile (RM) 857.8 in the Twin Cities, Minnesota, to Locks and Dam 10 at Guttenberg, Iowa (RM 615.1), and the lowermost (Corps-maintained) reaches of the black (at La Crosse, Wisconsin), Minnesota, and St. Croix rivers. More than 100 formal Sites were thoroughly surveyed (usually by brailing), and about a dozen locations were investigated cursority. Over 10,000 living mussels were collected and examined, including a few of the Endangered Lampsilis higginsi.
