Book Frequency Doubled Mode Locked Nd YAG Laser

Download or read book Frequency Doubled Mode Locked Nd YAG Laser written by Arnold R. Clobes and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 80 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of the work reported herein is to achieve stable mode-locked, second harmonic power output from a Nd:YAG laser. Particular emphasis is placed on amplitude stability and on conversion efficiency. The experimental results of this program are 200 mW of 0.53 micron mode-locked power output at a PRF of 500 MHz. The amplitude fluctuations are + or - 4%. The intracavity barium sodium niobate crystal, used as both the second harmonic generator and mode-lock modulator, was driven at 250 MHz. Stability control techniques successfully demonstrated include: (1) cladding of the laser rod; (2) amplitude equalization of the output pulse train; (3) maintaining the relative frequency difference between the modulator drive and the cavity c/2L frequency within narrow limits by use of a phase-lock loop; (4) series regulation of the lamp current and the use of ballast resistors; and (5) maintaining the nonlinear crystal at the phase-match temperature by closed-loop control of the oven temperature. Thermal effects in the banana crystal arising from absorption of the fundamental wavelength radiation were found to limit the amplitude stability of the laser output. The same effects distort the 0.53 micron far-field beam profile and reduce the conversion efficiency.

Book Mode Locked Frequency Doubled Neodymium Laser

Download or read book Mode Locked Frequency Doubled Neodymium Laser written by J. H. Boyden and published by . This book was released on 1970 with total page 145 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Investigations were conducted in the areas of second harmonic generation and mode locking with CW neodymium:YAG Lasers. Demonstration of consistent and reproducible 100% conversion of the available CW power at 1.06 microns into 0.53 micron power was accomplished at a level of 2.1 watts in the TEM(oo) mode. A completely electronic closed loop automatically stabilized mode-locking system was developed, with capability of tracking plus or minus 1.5% variations in cavity length. Experimental and theoretical investigations of combined mode locking and intracavity second harmonic generation using a common Ba2NaNb5O15 crystal showed that there was a strong interaction between the processes, the nonlinear harmonic generation having a serious effect on mode-locking effectiveness. Thermal effects due to absorption in the nonlinear crystal were shown to have a significant effect on second harmonic generation. Correlation between theory and experiment was obtained. (Author).

Book Frequency Doubled Neodymium Laser

Download or read book Frequency Doubled Neodymium Laser written by J. E. Murray and published by . This book was released on 1972 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The results of an experimental program designed to produce the maximum, stable second harmonic power from a mode-locked Nd:YAG laser using external second harmonic generation are reported. The laser was operated C.W. at the 2 to 3 watt level in a TEM transverse mode, and mode locked at 500 MHz. The major results were: Up to 400 mw of second harmonic power with a conversion efficiency of 15% was generated and demonstrated to be stable (less than 10% drift) over testing periods of 15 minutes or greater. A maximum of 550 mw of second harmonic was generated at 16% efficiency but at this level the system was stable for only a few minutes.

Book Advanced Photonics with Second Order Optically Nonlinear Processes

Download or read book Advanced Photonics with Second Order Optically Nonlinear Processes written by A.D. Boardman and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 491 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although it took some time to establish the word, photonics is both widely accepted and used throughout the world and a major area of activity concerns nonlinear materials. In these the nonlinearity mainly arises from second-order or third-order nonlinear optical processes. A restriction is that second-order processes only occur in media that do not possess a centre of symmetry. Optical fibres, on the other hand, being made of silica glass, created by fusing SiO molecules, are made of material with a centre of z symmetry, so the bulk of all processes are governed by third-order nonlinearity. Indeed, optical fibre nonlinearities have been extensively studied for the last thirty years and can be truly hailed as a success story of nonlinear optics. In fact, the fabrication ofsuch fibres, and the exploitation oftheir nonlinearity, is in an advanced stage - not least being their capacity to sustain envelope solitons. What then ofsecond-order nonlinearity? This is also well-known for its connection to second-harmonic generation. It is an immediate concern, however, to understand how waves can mix and conserve both energy and momentum ofthe photons involved. The problem is that the wave vectors cannot be made to match without a great deal of effort, or at least some clever arrangement has to be made - a special geometry, or crystal arrangement. The whole business is called phase matching and an inspection ofthe state-of-the-art today, reveals the subject to be in an advanced state.

  • Publisher : Springer Science & Business Media
  • Release : 2013-06-29
  • ISBN : 3662225743
  • Pages : 397 pages

Download or read book Ultrashort Light Pulses written by S.L. Shapiro and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-06-29 with total page 397 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Soon after the invention of the laser, a brand-new area of endeavour emerged after the discovery that powerful ultrashort (picosecond) light pulses could be extracted from some lasers. Chemists, physicists, and engineers quickly recognized that such pulses would allow direct temporal studies of extremely rapid phenomena requiring, however, development of revolutionary ultrafast optical and electronic devices. For basic research the development of picosecond pulses was highly important because experimentalists were now able to measure directly the motions of atoms and molecules in liquids and solids: by disrupting a material from equilibrium with an intense picosecond pulse and then recording the time of return to the equilibrium state by picosecond techniques. Studies of picosecond laser pulses-their generation and diagnostic tech niques-are still undergoing a fairly rapid expansion, but a critical review of the state of the art by experienced workers in the field may be a timely help to new experimentalists. We shall review the sophisticated tools developed in the last ten years, including the modelocked picosecond-pulse-emitting lasers, the picosecond detection techniques, and picosecond devices. Moreover, we shall outline the basic foundations for the study of rapid events in chemistry and physics, which have emerged after many interesting experiments and which are now being applied in biology. An in-depth coverage of various aspects of the picosecond field should be helpful to scientists and engineers alike.
