Book excerpt: Excerpt from Thirty-Sixth Annual Report of the Bureau of American Ethnology: To the Secretary of the Smithsonian Institution, 1914-1915 The operations of the Bureau of American Ethnology during the fiscal year ended June 30, 1915, were conducted in accordance with the act of Congress approved August 1, 1914, making appropriations for sundry civil expenses of the Government, which act contains the following item: American ethnology: For continuing ethnological researches among the American Indians and the natives of Hawaii, including the excavation and preservation of archeologic remains, under the direction of the Smithsonian Institution, including salaries or compensation of all necessary employees and the purchase of necessary books and periodicals, including payment in advance for subscriptions, forty-two thousand dollars. Systematic Researches As in the past, the systematic researches of the bureau were conducted by its regular staff, consisting of 9 ethnologists, including the ethnologist-in-charge, and of 10 ethnologists during part of the year. These operations may be summarized as follows: Mr. F. W. Hodge, ethnologist-in-charge, devoted most of his attention during the year to the administration of the affairs of the bureau, but opportunity was found, with the assistance of Miss Florence M. Poast, to add materially to the compilation of the bibliography of the Pueblo Indians, which now comprises about 2,400 titles.
