But then one choice—or maybe it is a series of choices—sets them down an irrevocable path. We’ll Fly Awayweaves together Luke and Toby’s senior year of high school with letters Luke writes to Toby later—from death row. Best friends since childhood, Luke and Toby have dreamed of one thing: getting out of their dead-end town. Soon they finally will, riding the tails of Luke’s wrestling scholarship, never looking back. If they don’t drift apart first. If Toby’s abusive dad, or Luke’s unreliable mom, or anything else their complicated lives throw at them doesn’t get in the way. For fans of Jason Reynolds, Marieke Nijkamp, and NPR’s Serial podcast. The conclusion will leave them devastated. Book excerpt: "Brilliantly faceted and extremely funny. . . . While I was reading it, I was making a list of all the people I wanted to send it to, until I realized that I wanted to send it to everyone I know." — Ann Patchett “Improbably charming...will have you chortling and reading lines aloud.” — PEOPLE The internationally bestselling, compulsively readable novel—spiky, sharp, intriguingly dark, and tender—that combines the psychological insight of Sally Rooney with the sharp humor of Nina Stibbe and the emotional resonance of Eleanor Oliphant Is Completely Fine. Martha Friel just turned forty. Once, she worked at Vogue and planned to write a novel. Now, she creates internet content. She used to live in a pied-à-terre in Paris. Now she lives in a gated community in Oxford, the only person she knows without a PhD, a baby or both, in a house she hates but cannot bear to leave. But she must leave, now that her husband Patrick—the kind who cooks, throws her birthday parties, who loves her and has only ever wanted her to be happy—has just moved out. Because there’s something wrong with Martha, and has been for a long time. When she was seventeen, a little bomb went off in her brain and she was never the same. But countless doctors, endless therapy, every kind of drug later, she still doesn’t know what’s wrong, why she spends days unable to get out of bed or alienates both strangers and her loved ones with casually cruel remarks. And she has nowhere to go except her childhood home: a bohemian (dilapidated) townhouse in a romantic (rundown) part of London—to live with her mother, a minorly important sculptor (and major drinker) and her father, a famous poet (though unpublished) and try to survive without the devoted, potty-mouthed sister who made all the chaos bearable back then, and is now too busy or too fed up to deal with her. But maybe, by starting over, Martha will get to write a better ending for herself—and she’ll find out that she’s not quite finished after all.

Book excerpt: Written from a strikingly fresh perspective, this new account of the Boston Tea Party and the origins of the American Revolution shows how a lethal blend of politics, personalities, and economics led to a war that few people welcomed but nobody could prevent. In this powerful but fair-minded narrative, British author Nick Bunker tells the story of the last three years of mutual embitterment that preceded the outbreak of America’s war for independence in 1775. It was a tragedy of errors, in which both sides shared responsibility for a conflict that cost the lives of at least twenty thousand Britons and a still larger number of Americans. The British and the colonists failed to see how swiftly they were drifting toward violence until the process had gone beyond the point of no return. At the heart of the book lies the Boston Tea Party, an event that arose from fundamental flaws in the way the British managed their affairs. By the early 1770s, Great Britain had become a nation addicted to financial speculation, led by a political elite beset by internal rivalry and increasingly baffled by a changing world. When the East India Company came close to collapse, it patched together a rescue plan whose disastrous side effect was the destruction of the tea. With lawyers in London calling the Tea Party treason, and with hawks in Parliament crying out for revenge, the British opted for punitive reprisals without foreseeing the resistance they would arouse. For their part, Americans underestimated Britain’s determination not to give way. By the late summer of 1774, when the rebels in New England began to arm themselves, the descent into war had become irreversible. Drawing on careful study of primary sources from Britain and the United States, An Empire on the Edge sheds new light on the Tea Party’s origins and on the roles of such familiar characters as Benjamin Franklin, John Hancock, and Thomas Hutchinson. The book shows how the king’s chief minister, Lord North, found himself driven down the road to bloodshed. At his side was Lord Dartmouth, the colonial secretary, an evangelical Christian renowned for his benevolence. In a story filled with painful ironies, perhaps the saddest was this: that Dartmouth, a man who loved peace, had to write the dispatch that sent the British army out to fight.

Book South of Tradition

Download or read book South of Tradition written by Trudier Harris and published by University of Georgia Press. This book was released on 2002 with total page 249 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: With characteristic originality and insight, Trudier Harris-Lopez offers a new and challenging approach to the work of African American writers in these twelve previously unpublished essays. Collectively, the essays show the vibrancy of African American literary creation across several decades of the twentieth century. But Harris-Lopez's readings of the various texts deliberately diverge from traditional ways of viewing traditional topics. South of Tradition focuses not only on well-known writers such as Zora Neale Hurston, Ralph Ellison, James Baldwin, and Richard Wright, but also on up-and-coming writers such as Randall Kenan and less-known writers such as Brent Wade and Henry Dumas. Harris-Lopez addresses themes of sexual and racial identity, reconceptualizations of and transcendence of Christianity, analyses of African American folk and cultural traditions, and issues of racial justice. Many of her subjects argue that geography shapes identity, whether that geography is the European territory many blacks escaped to from the oppressive South, or the South itself, where generations of African Americans have had to come to grips with their relationship to the land and its history. For Harris-Lopez, "south of tradition" refers both to geography and to readings of texts that are not in keeping with expected responses to the works. She explains her point of departure for the essays as "a slant, an angle, or a jolt below the line of what would be considered the norm for usual responses to African American literature." The scope of Harris-Lopez's work is tremendous. From her coverage of noncanonical writers to her analysis of humor in the best-selling The Color Purple, she provides essential material that should inform all future readings of African American literature.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Annis is on a quest to save her sister Bliss and the only way she can do it is to break a twenty-year old curse. Annis does not intend to let anyone frighten her off or stop her from doing what she must to save her sister. Not the suspicious people in the small village where she stops to seek information, not the heavy mist that descends like sentinels on the hills, not the beady, black-eyed ravens that keep watch, and especially not Brogan, the condemned lord, and the only way she can make sure of that is to let him join her on her quest. Though, it is not much of an option since he insists. Brogan of the Clan MacRae is on a quest to save the determined, willful Annis from herself. She refuses to accept the truth… the curse that had been cast on the three clans twenty odd years ago cannot be broken. He and the other two cursed lords, Odran and Rannick, have tried. If they failed, surely Annis would, and she could possibly be harmed in the process. He had to admit she had caught his interest when he had first met the fiery red-haired beauty, a memorable meeting for sure, since he had been covered in blood and she faints at the sight of blood, which led to her falling into his arms. Be that as it may, he was here to make sure no harm came to her, see her through her futile quest, and return her home. However, there was another reason he had chased after her and when she discovered his secret, they would be no containing her fury. All does not go as either Annis or Brogan planned and when the witch finally shows herself, it sends the couple on another quest where long-kept lies and secrets abound. Brogan does all he can to keep her safe, and Annis discovers that she is not only fighting to save her sister, but she is also fighting to free Brogan from the curse. Through it all the couple find something neither were looking for—love. Author’s note: There is a prequel to this trilogy… Highland Intrigue A Prequel. You get to meet most of the characters in the trilogy and see how Brogan and Annis first met and find out what brought them to this point. Also, while Annis and Brogan’s love story concludes in this book, there is a story arc/mystery that runs through to book three, Highlander The Cursed Lord. Highland Intrigue Trilogy Highland Intrigue A Prequel Book one, The Silent Highlander Book two, The Condemned Highlander Book three, Highlander The Cursed Lord
