Book excerpt: All too often, highly fictionalized cinematic depictions of the past are accepted as the unassailable truth by those unfamiliar with the "real" account. This book profiles sixty movies that portray actual moments in history, and compares the mythologized account of each event to what really happened. Movies chronicled include The Ten Commandments, Spartacus, A Man for All Seasons, Gladiator, Gandhi, Apollo 13, The Thin Red Line, Dances with Wolves, Braveheart, The Last Emperor, All the Presidents Men, Mutiny on the Bounty, Gone with the Wind, Bonnie & Clyde, Patton, and Elizabeth. Sanello also contrasts several historical figures with their filmed treatments, including Julius Caesar, Henry V, Christopher Columbus, Joan of Arc, Sir Thomas More, Jesus Christ, Catherine the Great, Sigmund Freud, and Harry Houdini. Lavishly illustrated with sixty film stills, Reel v. Real shows how a happening's genuine details are frequently reshaped and distorted by Hollywood's bottomless appetite for over-the-top flamboyance and melodrama.

  • Publisher : Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG
  • Release : 2018-04-23
  • ISBN : 3110384124

Download or read book Fact and Fiction written by Albrecht Koschorke and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2018-04-23 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How can we develop a cultural theory starting with the basic insight that human beings are "storytelling animals"? Within literary studies, narratology is a highly developed field. However, literary historians have not paid much attention to the large and small stories abounding in everyday discourse, guiding all kinds of social activity, and providing common ground for whole societies—but also fueling controversies and hostilities. Moreover, "narrative" is not only a scholarly category but has come into use in many fields of social activity as a tool for cultural self-fashioning. This book is based on the assumption that to a large extent, social dynamics is modeled in an aesthetic manner via narratives. It explores the narrative organization of cultural spaces and time-frames, the mythological shaping of communities and adversaries, and the co-production of narratives and institutions aimed at stabilizing social life. In this framework, the epistemological problem looms large of how an instrument as unreliable as narrative can participate in the creation of a social consensus regarding truth. This problem endows the general topics explored in this book with a particularly contemporary dimension.

Unraveling these complex and interconnected issues demands careful and objective assessment. Fact and Fiction in Global Energy Policy aims to change the prevailing discourse by examining fifteen core energy questions from a variety of perspectives, demonstrating how, for each of them, no clear-cut answer exists. Is industry the chief energy villain? Can we sustainably feed and fuel the planet at the same time? Is nuclear energy worth the risk? Should geoengineering be outlawed? Touching on pollution, climate mitigation and adaptation, energy efficiency, government intervention, and energy security, the authors explore interrelated concepts of law, philosophy, ethics, technology, economics, psychology, sociology, and public policy. This book offers a much-needed critical appraisal of the central energy technology and policy dilemmas of our time and the impact of these on multiple stakeholders.

Book excerpt: Politics and media are constantly dealing with the shifting definitions of facts, truth, reality, and fiction. Yet this is something the field of documentary art has been addressing for much longer. The contributions in this volume are from and about artists who explore the boundaries between fact and fiction by playing with the notion of the ?documentary?. The book draws from a wide range of documentary art practices, such as working with archival materials or scrutinising one?s own subjective stance as an artist. It observes how artists deploy the fine line between fact and fiction as a means to imagine versions of the future, and how it can still have an impact in the world of today.

Book Fact Fiction and Faction

Download or read book Fact Fiction and Faction written by Jørgen Dines Johansen and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This collection of articles analyzes important aspects of the complex relationships in the contemporary world between fact on the one hand and fiction and faction, history and counterfactual history on the other. The borderline between the two realms has been increasingly complicated and blurred during recent decades. This does not make the distinction between what is real and what is fiction irrelevant but it now takes a lot more scholarly effort to make such a distinction or to figure out exactly to what extent and in what ways the border between the two has been blurred. --
