Book excerpt: The summation of the progress reported in this, the first of twelve monthly reports, concerns resin research and development. Material development has included the defining and establishing of test procedures to determine resin characteristics. Equipment and methods have been developed to (1) evaluate flexural strength and flexural modulus, (2) evaluate the rate of cure, and (3) determine resin shrinkage during cure. Solar collector development engineering has not progressed beyond the planning stage since a subcontract program planned for this phase of the work has not yet been initiated. Resin development has been recorded in (1) isocyanate terminated prepolymers and (2) acetoxy silane prepolymers.

Book excerpt: Materials and techniques were improved to advance the concept of expandable, self-rigidizing honeycomb type structures. The strength to weight ratio of structures was markedly improved through the correct utilization of inflatable configurations with a high degree of structural rigidity. A rigidizing resin was developed with an improved strength/weight ratio, a more rapid cure time, and a good shelf life. Solar collectors with reasonably good optical reflectivity and aerospace shelters were fabricated, expanded, and rigidized. Two large sized structures suitable for space application were constructed as end items of this study. Those structures were a 10 foot diameter, 60 degree rim angle solar energy concentrator and a 13 x 15 ft semi-cylindrical aerospace maintenance dock. Both structures utilized a resin impregnated honeycomb type fabric construction and were inflated and rigidized from a packaged configuration. The maintenance dock was successfully designed for 30 psf gravity and 100 mph wind loads. Both structures significantly advanced the concept of expandable, self-rigidizing structures by their size, construction, and performance.

Book excerpt: Properties obtainable by various techniques of curing polymer systems were evaluated and a resin system for the rigidization of expandable space structures was developed. Several fabrics which closely resembled a true honeycomb were used in the fabrication of the desired items. The final items of the development program were a lightweight, expandable, self-rigidizing 5 ft. diameter solar collector and a lightweight, expandable self-rigidizing 7 ft. diameter by 7 ft. high cylindrical space shelter. Both final items were rigidized by vapor phase catalysis of a chemical rigidizing resin system. The study revealed that it is feasible and even desirable to design, fabricate, and rigidize flexibel, self-rigidizing solar collectors and shelters for space application using a honeycomb type sandwich material as the basic structural material.

Book excerpt: The objectives of the program are: (1) fabrication, space deployment, and rigidification of a large parabolic solar collector; (2) fabrication and space deployment of inflatable, rigidizable space shelter structures. The first 10-foot diameter mirror was completed by addition of the plumbing attachments to the manifold for the rigidization task. However, due to some slight leakage between the inflated sandwich and mirror shell coat, it was decided that this unit will be rigidized in ambient conditions. The 4-foot diameter x 8-foot long cylinder was completed, including impregnation. However, deployment in the vacuum chamber was unsuccessful because the resin had already rigidified.
