Download or read book Twenty Years of Euro Mediterranean Relations written by Richard Youngs and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2017-10-02 with total page 337 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The creation of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership in 1995 was seen, at the time, as a forward-thinking foreign policy which would strengthen ties between Europe and the Mediterranean Arab states. Since that time, however, almost none of this initial ambition has been translated into positive, successful policy. Twenty years on from the creation of the Euro-Mediterranean Partnership (now the Union for the Mediterranean), this book collects some of the most influential articles published in the Mediterranean Politics journal since 1995 – and suggests what these articles tell us about the state of relations between Europe and the Middle East. The selection of articles gives a sense of the way in which analytical debate has changed in the journal’s lifetime, a lifetime which has seen the journal at the forefront of academic study on a variety of issues in the Mediterranean region. As such, the selection is naturally a reflection of the different periods from which the articles are taken, and, taken together, they paint a picture of how the Euro-Mediterranean partnership has been reshaped over time.

Collectively, the authors relate this musical flow to broader transnational flows of people and power that generate complex encounters, bringing the diverse cultures of Europe, Africa, and the Middle East into new and challenging forms of contact. Individually, the chapters offer detailed ethnographic and historiographic studies of music’s multifaceted roles in such interactions. From collaborations between Moroccan migrant and Spanish Muslim convert musicians in Granada, to the incorporation of West African sonorities and Hasidic melodies in the musical liturgy of Abu Ghosh Abbey, Jerusalem, these communities sing, play, dance, listen, and record their diverse experiences of encounter at the Mediterranean crossroads.

Book The East Mediterranean Triangle at Crossroads

Download or read book The East Mediterranean Triangle at Crossroads written by Jean-Loup Samaan and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2016-11-09 with total page 60 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For years, the Israel-Turkey partnership was believed to be an anchor of stability in the troubled Middle East. For the United States the two regional players were supposed to pave the way to a regional system, but the collapse of their bilateral relation over the last years has put an end to these expectations. As a result of this crisis between Ankara and Jerusalem, the competition in the East Mediterranean region evolved significantly. Whereas Turkey increased its inflammatory rhetoric against Israel, the latter counterbalanced Turkey's position by strengthening ties with two rivals of Ankara: Greece and Cyprus. As Jean-Loup Samaan explains in this Letort Paper, these power plays have major ramifications. The perilous zero-sum game which is taking place in the Mediterranean impacts bilateral relations between all the stakeholders, not only at the military but at the economic level as well. It also jeopardizes the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) policies in the region...

Book Euro Mediterranean Relations after the Arab Spring

Download or read book Euro Mediterranean Relations after the Arab Spring written by Jakob Horst and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-29 with total page 252 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The ’Arab Spring’ triggered paradigmatic shifts but, despite these changes, much in the Euro-Mediterranean region remains the same. Utilising ’Logics of Action’, an innovative theoretical framework designed to capture the complexity of political interaction in one of the fastest changing regions in the world, this book discusses developments in the region before and after the Arab Spring that can be characterised by a continuation of the norm. Expert contributors identify patterns of interaction between governmental institutions, economic entrepreneurs, religious groups and other diverse actors that withstood these historical changes and explore why these relationships have proved so robust. Connecting a unique sample of case studies on changing and persistent ’Logics of Action’ within the Euro-Mediterranean space this book provides a pivotal contribution to our understanding of political interaction between North Africa, the Middle East and the European Union. Offering a completely new perspective on the events of the ’Arab Spring’ it identifies something that seems paradoxical at first sight; persistence in times of radical change.

Book Contemporary EU Egypt Relations Within the Parameters of the EU s Euro Mediterranean Partnership Programme and ENP

Download or read book Contemporary EU Egypt Relations Within the Parameters of the EU s Euro Mediterranean Partnership Programme and ENP written by Shaista Shaheen Zafar and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The European Community since its very inception has been seeking to develop close ties with the Southern Mediterranean countries, but in the beginning, it focused only on the economic aspects of the relationship. However, with growing awareness of the imperatives of European security, which could be threatened by any negative development in the Southern Mediterranean region, seen as a backyard of the European continent, the European Community/European Union began to pay close attention to its Mediterranean policies. The Barcelona Process and the EU's Neighbourhood Policy are designed to bring the EU member states and the Southern Mediterranean countries on a single platform to promote peace, prosperity and stability in the broader region. Egypt is a partner in the Euro-Mediterranean agreements. Egypt, on the crossroads of the Middle East and Africa is a very important country for the EU, not only because of its strategic location but also because it wields strong influence on Arab and African politics. The EU is a major trading partner of Egypt and the biggest donor of assistance to the country. The European Union has been reluctant to apply its human rights and democracy clause against the secular authoritarian regime of Egypt.

Book The Mythical Mediterranean Sea

Download or read book The Mythical Mediterranean Sea written by Nick Ceramella and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-04-25 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume brings together papers presented at the 7th Annual International Conference co-organised by Florence University of the Arts, Italy, and Stony Brook University (SUNY), USA. The contributors explored the many connections that define the Mediterranean Sea as a symbol of tradition and modernity, and examined it as a region capable of congregating, synergizing and transforming cultures. Their writings focus on the relationship between the cultural, social, and historical environment of Mare Nostrum to pinpoint the elements defining its identity. Hence, particular emphasis is placed on the role and relevance of the Mediterranean as the first beacon of multi-ethnicity which may be seen as a symbol of diversity and unity, as well as a model that holds clues to understanding the global merging of cultures. As such, it is a real shame to see that the general interest in this unique and fascinating area has arisen not thanks to such highly positive features, but because, as Pope Francis says, it has become an open-air cemetery where thousands of people keep drowning. The multifaceted approach to this topic has resulted in the book being divided into four sections, covering the following thematic areas: Literature, History, Culture, and Identity.
