Book excerpt: Excerpt from Wendell Phillips It is rare for any striking career to have a dramatic beginning; but it may be truly said of Wendell Phil lips, that his first recorded speech established his repu tation as an orator, and determined the whole course of his life. Being graduated at the Cambridge Law School in 1834, he was admitted to the bar in the same year. In 1835 he witnessed the mobbing of Garrison; in 1836 joined the American Anti-slavery Society. In 1837 occurred the great excitement which raged in Con gress around John Quincy Adams when he stood for the right of petition; and in November of that year Elijah P. Lovejoy was murdered at Alton, Ill., while defending his press from a pro-slavery mob. The Rev. Dr. Channing and others asked the use of Faneuil Hall for a meeting to express their indignation: the city authorities refused it; Dr. Channing then wrote an appeal to the citizens of Boston, and the authorities yielded to the demand. At the Faneuil-hall meeting Jonathan Phillips, a wealthy citizen and a second cousin of Wendell Phillips, presided; Dr. Channing. Known as the anti-slavery agitation, it assumed as one of its early phases the demand for immediate and unconditional abolition. To this cause Phillips gave his best years as the preacher of a crusade against an institution, at first national and later sectional, which finally came to be regarded as bad anywhere. Agitation of a disputed question was the method, untrammeled speech before the people the means, and superlative eloquence the manner of his warfare. In his later years he became the champion of other causes. To do him and his work justice, both should be contemplated from the present as the day of an accomplished purpose which was not generally approved in his own time nor correctly estimated. Moorfield Storey, Esq., President of the Association, occupied the chair and intro duced the orator of the occasion, Judge Stafford, of Wash ington, District of Columbia, a namesake of Mr. Phillips, and peculiarly qualified by inheritance, training, and sym pathy to do justice to his subject. His address, delivered with rare eloquence and charm, made a profound impression on his audience, and was felt to be so noble and adequate a tribute to the great reformer that there has been an urgent request for its publication. The generosity of friends has made this possible, and will be gratefully appreciated by all to whom the opportunity of reading the oration is thus afforded. It has seemed fitting, in this connection, to re print from the Atlantic Monthly, in which it first appeared more than twenty years ago, Judge Stafl'ord's fine poem on Wendell Phillips, which has an equal claim to preservation with his masterly oration.
