Book Eton Classic Reprint

Download or read book Eton Classic Reprint written by A. Clutton-Brock and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 274 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eton Sir Henry Maxwell Lyte's "History of Eton College" is the standard work on the subject, and my obligations to it are too general to be acknowledged in detail. I am also indebted to Mr. Sterry's "Annals of Eton College," a delightful book containing many interesting facts not to be found elsewhere; to Messrs. Willis and Clark's "Architectural History of the University of Cambridge;" to Mr. Leach's "History of Winchester College," and to the Rev. F. St. John Thackeray's interesting memoir of Dr. Hawtrey. It is the object of the books contained in this series to give an account of the present condition of the schools of which they treat. It has therefore been necessary to compress the history of those schools into as small a compass as possible. It has been difficult to do this in the case of Eton, where the history is both long and full of interesting details, and I am conscious that much is omitted in the earlier chapters of this book which readers might expect to find there. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eton Fables The volume of Fables to which this is a com panion contained a series all delivered at one School on two annual occasions this volume has not the same unity, or perhaps not quite the same monotony: it may indeed be said with truth that some of these addresses are not Fables at all in the proper sense of the term. The first five were written primarily for Shrewsbury School, though most of them have at different times been also delivered at Eton: the rest, with the exception of two fragments of sermons, have Eton as their place of origin. Most have been delivered in Lower Chapel, and some to the more exacting congregation in College Chapel; While the two last have only been submitted to the searching criticism of my own Division. I h0pe that readers will make allowances for these different circumstances of their production. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. He was handsome-looking, about thirteen; but there was a bad expression about his face. He dressed rather loudly; he had a blue frock-coat on, a pair Of shepherd's-plaid trousers of a very large check, and an Eton blue tie confined by a fine cameo ring. He was considered by his tutor one Of the idlest and worst boys in the school. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Eton in the 'Seventies The publication some few years ago of Eton in the 'pariz°es, by my cousin, Mr. Arthur Duke Coleridge, set me wondering whether something similar might not be done for the Seventies, since nothing had then been written on that period. During the preparation of my notes, however, Eton under Homby, by O. E appeared, which seemed to convey a somewhat one-sided View of the Eton of that time, and, where it was not amusingly anecdotal, savoured too much of the Doctrinaire and the Socialist, and I was encouraged to persevere in order that future generations might not form the Opinion that we were as bad as O. E. Makes out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Memories of Eton Sixty Years Ago Classic Reprint

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Memories of Eton Sixty Years Ago No book of this kind can be written without mentioning names, and dwelling on the different methods and peculiarities of those mentioned. Almost without exception they have passed away, but their relations and friends remain. Every effort has been made that nothing should be here written which could reasonably give offence or cause annoyance to others. The illustrations are not intended to present a complete survey of Eton, but only a few views of buildings, etc., which no longer exist, or of landscapes no longer visible as formerly, with portraits of some of the masters mentioned in the text. The rhymes inserted here and there are also in the nature of illustrations, depicting in some cases a phase of Eton life which has passed away. They need not be taken too seriously. I have endeavoured as far as possible - and with considerable success - to discover and record the names of the authors of anony mous booksjand pamphlets and of the editors of the ephemeral School Magazines, but I have felt bound in printing this Bibliography to respect their anonymity. There are, however, many anonymous authors still to be identi hed, and I shall gratefully receive any information on this subject, and by way of addenda to or corrigenda of the Bibliography.
