Book Late Colonial Sublime

Download or read book Late Colonial Sublime written by G. S. Sahota and published by Northwestern University Press. This book was released on 2018-01-15 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking cues from Walter Benjamin’s fragmentary writings on literary-historical method, Late Colonial Sublime reconstellates the dialectic of Enlightenment across a wide imperial geography, with special focus on the fashioning of neo-epics in Hindi and Urdu literary cultures in British India. Working through the limits of both Marxism and postcolonial critique, this book forges an innovative approach to the question of late romanticism and grounds categories such as the sublime within the dynamic of commodification. While G. S. Sahota takes canonical European critics such as Theodor Adorno and Max Horkheimer to the outskirts of empire, he reads Indian writers such as Muhammad Iqbal and Jayashankar Prasad in light of the expansion of instrumental rationality and the neotraditional critiques of the West it spurred at the onset of decolonization. By bringing together distinct literary canons—both metropolitan and colonial, hegemonic and subaltern, Western and Eastern, all of which took shape upon the common realities of imperial capitalism—Late Colonial Sublime takes an original dialectical approach. It experiments with fragments, parallaxes, and constellational form to explore the aporias of modernity as well as the possible futures they may signal in our midst. A bold intervention into contemporary debates that synthesizes a wealth of sources, this book will interest readers and scholars in world literature, critical theory, postcolonial criticism, and South Asian studies.

Download or read book Nope No Regrets written by Jb Trepagnier and published by . This book was released on 2021-06-20 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: I should have trusted Faust. Now, we're all in solitary, my sentence is definitely getting extended, and his hands are tied. But all hope isn't lost. Faust is visiting me under the guise of interrogating me about our escape. He's trying to help as much as he can. All my life, I'd never met a single demon. There are now two of them trying to wear the warden down into being allowed to see me. One of them says he's my brother and the other claims to be my fiancé. I think the only reason Faust hasn't killed the one claiming I'm supposed to marry him is because he might be my shot at getting out of here if the warden ever relents. I want to go to Hell more than anything. I've wanted to meet my family for the longest time. I'm not wild about the idea of this random fiancé that showed up, but someone in my family arranged that marriage and he came here to get me out of jail. Something isn't right though. According to Faust, it didn't seem like my brother and my fiancé were working as a team to get me out of here. I have a feeling one of those men was the reason I didn't grow up in Hell like I was supposed to. I'm definitely leaving this prison with one of them, but I have conditions. One of them better be honest with me why I was sent away and I was bringing people with me. We had a team when we planned to break out. I was getting all of us out of here. Faust better get on board because I was inviting him too.

Book Deciphering Markets and Money

Download or read book Deciphering Markets and Money written by Jukka Gronow and published by Helsinki University Press. This book was released on 2020-02-03 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jukka Gronow’s book Deciphering Markets and Money solves the problem of the specific social conditions of an economic order based on money and the equal exchange of commodities. Gronow scrutinizes the relation of sociology to neoclassical economics and reflects on how sociology can contribute to the analyses of the major economic institutions. The question of the comparability and commensuration of economic objects runs through the chapters of the book. The author shows that due to the multidimensionality and principal quality uncertainty of products, markets would collapse without market devices that are either procedural, consisting of technical standards and measuring instruments, or aesthetic, relying on the judgements of taste, or both. In his book, Gronow demonstrates that in this respect, financial markets share the same problem as the markets of wines, movies, or PCs and mobile phones, and hence offer a highly actual case to study their social constitution in the process of coming into being.

Download or read book In Defiance of Painting written by Christine Poggi and published by Yale University Press. This book was released on 1992-01-01 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The invention of collage by Picasso and Braque in 1912 proved to be a dramatic turning point in the development of Cubism and Futurism and ultimately one of the most significant innovations in twentieth-century art. Collage has traditionally been viewed as a new expression of modernism, one allied with modernism's search for purity of means, anti-illusionism, unity, and autonomy of form. This book - the first comprehensive study of collage and its relation to modernism - challenges this view. Christine Poggi argues that collage did not become a new language of modernism but a new language with which to critique modernism. She focuses on the ways Cubist collage - and the Futurist multimedia work that was inspired by it - undermined prevailing notions of material and stylistic unity, subverted the role of the frame and pictorial ground, and brought the languages of high and low culture into a new relationship of exchange.
