Book Ergonomics of Hybrid Automated Systems II

Download or read book Ergonomics of Hybrid Automated Systems II written by Waldemar Karwowski and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1990 with total page 1072 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Advanced manufacturing systems, from their conception to implementation require intense human involvement. In the attempt to eliminate human labour, other skills become vital in the successful design and operation of high-technology systems. In order to succeed, technical knowledge must be integrated with human capabilities within a social infrastructure - from top-level management to end-users. Such integration can be best organized into a socio-technical theoretical framework. The papers in this volume reflect the complexity of current and potential problems which are intrinsic to technological advances in computerized manufacturing systems.

Book Ergonomics of Hybrid Automated Systems I

Download or read book Ergonomics of Hybrid Automated Systems I written by Waldemar Karwowski and published by Elsevier Publishing Company. This book was released on 1988 with total page 796 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume contains a selection of 89 of the 122 papers presented at the first international conference on Ergonomics of Advanced Manufacturing and Hybrid Automated Systems. The number and quality of proposals submitted for technical presentations testify to the importance of human aspects in implementing and managing advanced manufacturing technology and other computer-based automated systems. It also justifies the need for an international forum to discuss new ideas and exchange observations regarding the impact of technological progress on societies around the world. Hybrid automated systems, which combine human and machine intelligence, create progressively more and more challenges for workers, management, consumers and government. Recent developments in advanced manufacturing technology which include computer-integrated manufacturing, computer-aided design and engineering, computer-aided process planning and manufacturing resource planning, pose significant questions with respect to human involvement in hybrid automated systems.

Book Macroergonomics

Download or read book Macroergonomics written by Hal W. Hendrick and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2002-04-01 with total page 415 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book's primary objective is to provide a comprehensive coverage of ergonomics in overall work system analysis and design. It provides a summary of the historical development of macroergonomics. It explains how an understanding of macroergonomics can lead to improvements in such things as reducing work-related lost time accidents; and describes the methods and tools used in work system analysis and design. Throughout, the integrating theme is that the full potential of an organization--in terms of productivity, safety, health, and Quality of Work Life (QWL)--can't be met unless the overall work system is designed to conform with the characteristics of its technology, personnel subsystem, and the external environment upon which it depends for its survival and success. Using a sociotechnical systems approach, this text discusses the application of macroergonomics to training system development, hazard management, technology transfer, large scale organizational change projects, office and factory automation, community planning and development, and job design. For each of these applications, actual case examples will be included. The book will appeal to teachers of introductory human factors/ergonomics courses as a supplemental text or as the primary text for a course fully devoted to macroergonomics. In addition, it should also appeal to practicing ergonomists internationally as a must add to their personal professional libraries.

Book Expertise and Technology

Download or read book Expertise and Technology written by Jean-Michel Hoc and published by Psychology Press. This book was released on 2013-06-17 with total page 327 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Technological development has changed the nature of industrial production so that it is no longer a question of humans working with a machine, but rather that a joint human machine system is performing the task. This development, which started in the 1940s, has become even more pronounced with the proliferation of computers and the invasion of digital technology in all wakes of working life. It may appear that the importance of human work has been reduced compared to what can be achieved by intelligent software systems, but in reality, the opposite is true: the more complex a system, the more vital the human operator's task. The conditions have changed, however, whereas people used to be in control of their own tasks, today they have become supervisors of tasks which are shared between humans and machines. A considerable effort has been devoted to the domain of administrative and clerical work and has led to the establishment of an internationally based human-computer interaction (HCI) community at research and application levels. The HCI community, however, has paid more attention to static environments where the human operator is in complete control of the situation, rather than to dynamic environments where changes may occur independent of human intervention and actions. This book's basic philosophy is the conviction that human operators remain the unchallenged experts even in the worst cases where their working conditions have been impoverished by senseless automation. They maintain this advantage due to their ability to learn and build up a high level of expertise -- a foundation of operational knowledge -- during their work. This expertise must be taken into account in the development of efficient human-machine systems, in the specification of training requirements, and in the identification of needs for specific computer support to human actions. Supporting this philosophy, this volume *deals with the main features of cognition in dynamic environments, combining issues coming from empirical approaches of human cognition and cognitive simulation, *addresses the question of the development of competence and expertise, and *proposes ways to take up the main challenge in this domain -- the design of an actual cooperation between human experts and computers of the next century.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first of two volumes of essays in commemoration of Alan Turing, whose pioneering work in the theory of artificial intelligence and computer science continues to be widely discussed today. A group of prominent academics from a wide range of disciplines focus on three questions famously raised by Turing: What, if any, are the limits on machine 'thinking'? Could a machine be genuinely intelligent? Might we ourselves be biological machines, whose thought consists essentially in nothing more than the interaction of neurons according to strictly determined rules? The discussion of these fascinating issues is accessible to non-specialists and stimulating for all readers. Also available in paperback is the companion volume: Connectionism, Concepts, and Folk Psychology, edited by Andy Clark and Peter Millican. While Volume 1 concentrates on Turing's main innovations in artificial intelligence, Volume 2 looks more broadly at his intellectual legacy in philosophy and cognitive science.

Book Industrial Cultures and Production

Download or read book Industrial Cultures and Production written by Lauge Rasmussen and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 245 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book contains a selection of articles on the subject of 'Culture and Production'. They are results of international conferences held in Tokyo, Washington and Bremen between 1991 and 1994. The International Research Network on Culture and Production (CAPIRN) carried out a 5-year joint research project examining the impact of different industrial cultures on the development and implementation, and above all on the international transfer of technology. The machine tools sector was selected for this international comparative study, because over the last 15 years this global market has undergone dramatic changes that cannot be adequately explained by traditional economic theories of international competition. The 'industrial culture' research concept permits an analysis and understanding of hitherto unrecognised interrelationships between the dimensions of different industrial cultures and the process of technological innovation in international competition. The special challenge faced by CAPIRN was to develop the theoretical concept of industrial culture further and to apply it within a large-scale international study. A considerable amount of work in this field has been published by CAPIRN members since 1990. This book is the first compilation of research findings in the field of industrial culture. We wish to express our thanks to the national research councils in the participant countries, the FORCE and FAST programmes of the European Union, the Japanese Ministry for Industry, MITI, and the Hans Bockler Foundation, to mention only some of the many bodies that have provided support.
