Book Environmentally Sensitive Road Maintenance Practices for Dirt and Gravel Roads

Download or read book Environmentally Sensitive Road Maintenance Practices for Dirt and Gravel Roads written by Agriculture Dept., Forest Service, National Technology & Development Program and published by Government Printing Office. This book was released on 2016-12-28 with total page 130 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Over 1.6 million miles of dirt and gravel roads exist within the United States providing a vital part of the nation's transportation system. An environmentally sensitive road maintenance practice is a practice that when implemented reduces the adverse effect of a road on the environment by treating the cuase of the problem and is in keeping wtih the natural landscape. This illustrated field guide provides examples of environmentally sensitive maintenance practices, which if implemented reduce erosion and sediment, maintain subsurface hydrologic connectivity, restore drainage density to more natural conditions, and eliminate diversion potential. It is organized to identify visual signs and problems associated with CAUSES and SOLUTIONS for the most commonly encountered road problens (road surface, ditch, cutbank, etc.) Highway inspectors, public works construction inspectors, to include some construction and building inspectors and engineers that must meet compliance with specifications, building codes, and other regulations, Additionally, City engineers, concrete masonry contractors, road maintenance specialists and workers, and technicians, as well as County Road Supervisors may ber interested in this volume. Students pursuing degree programs for Civil Engineering or certificates of study for Industrial Maintenance Technology or Public Works training in clases such as Roadway Asset Management Essentials, or Inspecting Pavement Markings or certified Public Infrastructure Inspector courses may be interested in this print field guide as a handy reference. Book Gravel Roads

Download or read book Gravel Roads written by Ken Skorseth and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page 112 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this manual is to provide clear and helpful information for maintaining gravel roads. Very little technical help is available to small agencies that are responsible for managing these roads. Gravel road maintenance has traditionally been "more of an art than a science" and very few formal standards exist. This manual contains guidelines to help answer the questions that arise concerning gravel road maintenance such as: What is enough surface crown? What is too much? What causes corrugation? The information is as nontechnical as possible without sacrificing clear guidelines and instructions on how to do the job right.

Book Low Volume Roads Engineering Best Management Practices Field Guide

Download or read book Low Volume Roads Engineering Best Management Practices Field Guide written by Gordon Keller and published by . This book was released on 2023-11-30 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This Low-Volume Roads Engineering Best Management Practices Field Guide is intended to provide an overview of the key planning, location, design, construction, and maintenance aspects of roads that can cause adverse environmental impacts and to list key ways to prevent those impacts. Best Management Practices are general techniques or design practices that, when applied and adapted to fit site-specific conditions, will prevent or reduce pollution and maintain water quality. BMPs for roads have been developed by many agencies since roads often have a major adverse impact on water quality, and most of those impacts are preventable with good engineering and management practices. Roads that are not well planned or located, not properly designed or constructed, not well maintained, or not made with durable materials often have negative effects on water quality and the environment.

Book Assessing and Managing the Ecological Impacts of Paved Roads

Download or read book Assessing and Managing the Ecological Impacts of Paved Roads written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2006-01-22 with total page 325 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All phases of road developmentâ€"from construction and use by vehicles to maintenanceâ€"affect physical and chemical soil conditions, water flow, and air and water quality, as well as plants and animals. Roads and traffic can alter wildlife habitat, cause vehicle-related mortality, impede animal migration, and disperse nonnative pest species of plants and animals. Integrating environmental considerations into all phases of transportation is an important, evolving process. The increasing awareness of environmental issues has made road development more complex and controversial. Over the past two decades, the Federal Highway Administration and state transportation agencies have increasingly recognized the importance of the effects of transportation on the natural environment. This report provides guidance on ways to reconcile the different goals of road development and environmental conservation. It identifies the ecological effects of roads that can be evaluated in the planning, design, construction, and maintenance of roads and offers several recommendations to help better understand and manage ecological impacts of paved roads.

Book Best Management Practices for Environmental Issues Related to Highway and Street Maintenance

Download or read book Best Management Practices for Environmental Issues Related to Highway and Street Maintenance written by William Albert Hyman and published by Transportation Research Board. This book was released on 1999 with total page 116 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This synthesis report will be of interest to state, local, and federal agency environmental and maintenance administrators, directors, supervisors, engineers, and scientists. It describes current best management practices (BMPs) for environmental issues related to road and street maintenance. The synthesis documents relevant background and recent information with regard to management practices that can help protect, preserve, or enhance the environment while at the same time allow road maintenance organizations to carry out their fundamental mission of maintenance and repair in a cost-effective manner. Information for the synthesis was collected by surveying U.S. and Canadian state and local transportation agencies and by conducting a literature search using domestic sources. This report of the Transportation Research Board describes BMPs consisting of broad management approaches applicable to the entire maintenance program or to more than one program area. In addition, BMPs for specific maintenance activities or groups of maintenance activities are included. Finally, BMPs concerning specific environmental issues are discussed.
