Download or read book Elementary Arithmetic for Canadian Schools written by Barnard Smith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-24 with total page 330 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Arithmetic for Canadian Schools Article 1. By a Unit is meant a single object or thing, considered as one and undivided. 2. Number is tho name by which we signify how many objects or things are considered, whether one or more. When, for instance, we speak of one horse, two apples, three yards, or four hours, the number of the things referred to will be one, two, three, or four, according to the case; and so one, two, three, four, and the rest, are called numbers. 3. Numbers are considered either as Abstract or Concrete. Abstract numbers are those which have no reference to any particular kind of unit; thus, five, as an abstract number, signifies five units only, without any regard to particular objects. Concrete numbers are those which have reference to some particular kind of unit; thus, when we speak of five horns, six yards, seven horses, the numbers five, sis, seven, are said to be concrete numbers, having reference to the particular units one hour, one yard, one horse, respectively. 4. Arithmetic is the science of Numbers. 5. All numbers in common Arithmetic are expressed by means of the figure 0, commonly called zero or a cypher, which has no value in itself, and nine significant figures, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8, 9, which denote respectively tho numbers one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight, nine. These ten figures are sometimes called Digits. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book An Elementary Treatise on Arithmetic

Download or read book An Elementary Treatise on Arithmetic written by Wilson Taylor and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 224 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Arithmetic: For Use in the Public and Model Schools of Ontario Probably no subject of study in our schools is of more educational value than Arithmetic. More than any other it requires the student to form an accurate idea as to the magnitude of a quantity; to conceive the exact relation between the magnitudes of two quantities; by comparing two relations among three quantities, to obtain the necessary third relation by an act of the mind; and, finally, by repeating these processes under varying conditions, to bring a number of seemingly disconnected facts into relations, all tending towards a certain desired end. This on a small scale is just what the pupil must do on a large scale when he enters in earnest upon the practical affairs of life. The failure of Arithmetic, if there he any, to secure this object is due to no fault of the subject itself, but to causes which may be easily removed. (a) Too much time is spent in trying to teach "number analysis and synthesis" to young pupils, whose minds have not sufficiently matured to form the "concept" for which the symbol o stands. It may even be doubted that this concept ever is formed, that the pure number 13 is anything but a mere word or symbol, and that operations upon pure numbers are anything more than mere combinations of names, of symbols, or of sounds.
