Book excerpt: This report evaluates the effectiveness of urethane foam sprayed on the underside of bridge decks as insulation to reduce icing. A tri-level interchange in Rochester, New York was selected for the experimental installation. Surface temperatures of the upper and lower decks and the approach pavements were measured continuously during part of the winter of 1961-62 prior to the application of the urethane foam. Similar data was obtained for the entire winder of 1962-63 after the undersides of the decks had been insulated. Supplementary information included precipitation records, visual observations of icing, traffic studies, and an examination of a previously insulated bridge. The uninsulated decks were found to be only slightly more susceptible to icing than the approaches. Moreover, insulating the decks did not appreciably reduce icing. In fact, the temperature-stabilizing effect of the urethane increased the potential for icing during most of the winter. In addition, evidence that the insulation had trapped water suggested that the concrete deck and structural steel could be adversely affected. The only benefit derived from the insulation was a significant reduction of freeze-that cycles. This advantage is considered to be secondary, compared to the effect on the potential for icing. As a result of this investigation, it is recommended that further use of insulation to reduce icing be discontinued. The removal of the insulation from the experimental bridges also is suggested.

Applications to bridges on the New York State highway system from 1961 through 1967 included 1) surface overlays, 2) membranes between the structural slab and bituminous wearing course, and 3) surface sealants. Overlays and membranes consisted of epoxies, polyesters, polyurethanes, latexes, neoprenes, silicone rubbers, and asphalt cutbacks. Surface sealants included silicones, distillate oils, and linseed oil. None of the surface overlays lasted more than 2 to 3 yr. However, a flexible polyester resin with fiber glass has provided satisfactory service for 1-1/2 yr and will remain under observation. Leakage of box-girder bridges with a membrane was primarily due to shear-key construction (since modified), while the same materials applied to composite bridges were associated with leakage that could not be explained. A more comprehensive survey of membranes is planned. Silicone and distillate oil sealants on non-air-entrained concrete did not improve long-term durability. Air-entrained concrete, both with and without linseed oil treatment, showed no evidence of deterioration after 4 yr of exposure.
