Book Dynamics of Gas surface Reactions on A1 111 and Si 100

Download or read book Dynamics of Gas surface Reactions on A1 111 and Si 100 written by Monica Louise Neuburger and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 336 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Both experiments and computational methods were employed to study reaction dynamics at gas-solid interfaces. The recombinative desorption of hydrogen from Si(100) was studied through experiments using a custom-built ultrahigh vacuum molecular beam surface scattering apparatus while computational methods were employed to investigate the dissociative chemisorption of oxygen on Al(111). The desorption of H2 from Si(100) is an important reaction in the microelectronics industry as silane and disilane are common precursors in the chemical vapor deposition of thin silicon films. Since hydrogen atoms from these precursors passivate the surface to further film growth, films are commonly grown at high temperature to force the desorption of hydrogen; however, this allows for interdiffusion of atoms at heterojunctions. Hydrogen desorption is the rate limiting step to film growth at low temperatures. The first project in the study of this reaction was to investigate the ability of a supersonic molecular beam to remove H2 from Si(100) at low temperatures. Collisions between the beam and the hydrogen-covered surface transfer enough energy to adsorbed hydrogen atoms to induce desorption. In separate experiments, we gained insight into the nature of the transition state of hydrogen desorption from Si(100) by studying the angular distribution of thermally desorbing D2 molecules. A doubly differentially-pumped mass spectrometer was used as a line-of-sight detector to record angularly resolved thermal desorption spectra over a wide range of angles. We observed different distributions for the monodeuteride and dideuteride phases indicating that the transition state to desorption for these phases is different. The dissociative chemisorption of O2 on Al(111) was once thought to be a model system for metal oxidation. In the conventional view of dissociative chemisorption, the adsorbed oxygen atoms are expected to reside at neighboring sites. Experimental observations of widely spaced oxygen adatoms indicates that the reaction follows an unconventional pathway. We used Monte Carlo simulations to model this reaction using atom abstraction, in which only one atom from the molecule adsorbs on the surface, as the only operative mechanism. Our simulations show that the experimental observations can be explained with atom abstraction if two modifications are made to the basic atom abstraction mechanism.

Book Elementary Processes in Excitations and Reactions on Solid Surfaces

Download or read book Elementary Processes in Excitations and Reactions on Solid Surfaces written by Ayao Okiji and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 250 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elementary Processes in Excitations and Reactions on Solid Surfaces explores the fundamental nature of dynamics on solid surfaces. Attempts are made to reveal various aspects of elementary processes in excitations and reactions on solid surfaces by recent theoretical and experimental developments of the subjects such as molecular beams interacting with surfaces, ion beam scattering, laser-induced dynamical processes, electronically induced dynamical processes, and optical properties of solid surfaces. This volume is devided into three parts. Part I is concerned mainly with the rich reaction dynamics on potential-energy surfaces. Part II is devoted to the interplay of excitations. In Part III, new and rapidly developing methods are introduced.

Book Synchrotron Radiation Research

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the summer of 1972, I had the privilege and responsibility of organizing a Gordon Conference on the "High-Energy Spectroscopy of Solids." The Thursday evening session focused on future directions for high-energy spectroscopy. The possibilities associated with synchrotron radiation for future research became a central issue. I was asked to choose the members of the panel and chair the session. Although all five members of the panel went on to have distinguished careers using synchrotron radiation, at the time some of them were skeptical about the future role of synchrotron radiation sources in high-energy photon spectroscopy. The discussion became heated, and many members of the audience spoke, both pro and con. One member of the panel produced a detailed argument that synchrotron radiation would never rival standard X-ray tubes. We found out that there were estimates for properties of synchrotrons that differed by orders of magnitude from those of X-ray tubes. That much uncertainty was expressed at a meeting that took place less than twenty years ago. It is hard to believe that, even though at that time synchrotron radiation was already being used for photoemission studies of solids and surfaces and intershell excitations in solids, the potential impact and importance of this area was not fully realized even by the experts. Today synchrotron radiation is one of the primary tools for studying surfaces, and synchrotron radiation has affected many other areas of condensed-matter physics---even superconductivity.
