Book Dave Barry s Book of Bad Songs

Download or read book Dave Barry s Book of Bad Songs written by Dave Barry and published by Andrews McMeel Publishing. This book was released on 2012-11-06 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The humorist asked his readers to share their least favorite tunes and chronicles the hilarious responses. When funnyman Dave Barry asked readers about their least favorite tunes, he thought he was penning just another installment of his weekly syndicated humor column. But the witty writer was flabbergasted by the response when over 10,000 readers voted. “I have never written a column that got a bigger response than the one announcing the Bad Song Survey,” Barry wrote. Based on the results of the survey, Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs is a compilation of some of the worst songs ever written. Dave Barry fans will relish his quirky take. Music buffs too will appreciate this humorous stroll through the world’s worst lyrics. The only thing wrong with this book is that readers will find themselves unable to stop mentally singing the greatest hits of Gary Puckett. Praise for Dave Barry’s Book of Bad Songs “Barry is his usual puckish self, but the real surprise here is how funny many of the survey respondents are.” —Kirkus Reviews “Who can resist such a book?” —Publishers Weekly

Book Television Variety Shows

Download or read book Television Variety Shows written by David M. Inman and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2014-12-03 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the few hundred television viewers in 1946, a special treat on the broadcast schedule was the variety show called Hour Glass. It was the first TV program to go beyond talking heads, cooking demonstrations, and sporting events, featuring instead dancers, comics, singers, and long commercials for its sponsor, Chase and Sanborn coffee. Within two years, another variety show, Texaco Star Theatre, became the first true television hit and would be credited with the sales of thousands of television sets. The variety show formula was a staple of television in its first 30 years, in part because it lent itself to a medium where everything had to be live and preferably inside a studio. Most of the early television stars--including Jackie Gleason, Milton Berle, Sid Caesar, Ed Sullivan, Red Skelton, Dinah Shore, and Arthur Godfrey--rose to prominence through weekly variety shows. In the 1960s, major stars such as Jerry Lewis, Dean Martin, Judy Garland and Danny Kaye were hosting variety shows. By the 1970s, the format was giving way to sitcoms and dramas, but pop music stars Sonny and Cher, Tony Orlando and Dawn, and Donny and Marie Osmond hosted some of the last of the species. This book details 57 variety shows from the 1940s through the 1990s. A history of each show is first provided, followed by a brief look at each episode. Air date, guest stars, sketches performed, and a listing of songs featured are included.

Book excerpt: The human mind is the pinnacle of creation. It is spiritual and emanates from the human brain, initially at any rate! It is sociable and abstract and has an enormous coefficient of expansion. It can love. It can think. It can believe. It is the faculty that sets us apart from all other levels of being on the planet. It inhabits a dying world which has flickers of life like fireworks which sooner or later disappear like Chinese lanterns in the sky. We disappear too but our minds live on, hankering to be reunited with our old flames our bodies. Then the orchestra rises in crescendo as our minds and bodies reunite for better or for worse, and ride into the sunset. Great stuff! Read all about it. The mind and body inseparable in life, and separated at death, reappear in This is Your Life - Last Epic Episode. What will it be? A comedy, a tragedy or a thriller? It is all up to free will and belief. The believing mind is all powerful, provided it engages rationality honestly.
