Book excerpt: "The Chinese call the dragon 'lung' because it is deaf. It is the largest of scaly animals, and it has nine characteristics. Its head is like a camel's, its horns like a deer's, its eyes like a hare's, its ears like a bull's, its neck like an iguana's, its scales like those of a carp, its paws like a tiger's, and its claws like an eagle's. It has nine times nine scales, it being the extreme of a lucky number. On each side of its mouth are whiskers, under its chin a bright pearl, on the top of its head the 'poh shan' or foot-rule, without which it cannot ascend to heaven. The scales of its throat are reversed. Its breath changes into clouds from which come either fire or rain. The dragon is fond of the flesh of sparrows and swallows, it dreads the centipede and silk dyed of five colours. It is also afraid of iron. In front of its horns it carries a pearl of bluish colour striated with more or less symbolical lines." "The dragon," observes author Ernest Ingersoll, "is connected with the powers and doings of the earliest gods, and like them is vague, changeable and contradictory in its attributes, maintaining from first to last only one definable characteristic-association with and control of water." Rich with facts and fascinating lore, Ingersoll's well-researched book not only describes many of the myths surrounding one of the world's oldest, most elusive and powerful mythological creatures, but also teems with information about specific aspects of these mystical beasts-from grotesque serpents of the deep to land-roving, fire-breathing monsters that first appeared in creation myths of ancient civilizations. Dragons in China, Korea, and Japan are covered, as are those in Babylonian and Egyptian legends, and in Welsh, English, Irish, and French tales from the West, with specific details on draconic prototypes, the birth and wanderings of the dragon, the dragon as rain god, "the men of the dragon bones," the dragon's invasion of the West and association with the holy cross, and other related subjects. Book The Penguin Book of Dragons

Download or read book The Penguin Book of Dragons written by Scott G. Bruce and published by Penguin. This book was released on 2021-10-12 with total page 385 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two thousand years of legend and lore about the menace and majesty of dragons, which have breathed fire into our imaginations from ancient Rome to Game of Thrones A Penguin Classic The most popular mythological creature in the human imagination, dragons have provoked fear and fascination for their lethal venom and crushing coils, and as avatars of the Antichrist, servants of Satan, couriers of the damned to Hell, portents of disaster, and harbingers of the last days. Here are accounts spanning millennia and continents of these monsters that mark the boundary between the known and the unknown, including: their origins in the deserts of Africa; their struggles with their mortal enemies, elephants, in the jungles of South Asia; their fear of lightning; the world’s first dragon slayer, in an ancient collection of Sanskrit hymns; the colossal sea monster Leviathan; the seven-headed “great red dragon” of the Book of Revelation; the Loch Ness monster; the dragon in Beowulf, who inspired Smaug in Tolkien’s The Hobbit; the dragons in the prophecies of the wizard Merlin; a dragon saved from a centipede in Japan who gifts his human savior a magical bag of rice; the supernatural feathered serpent of ancient Mesoamerica; and a flatulent dragon the size of the Trojan Horse. From the dark halls of the Lonely Mountain to the blue skies of Westeros, we expect dragons to be gigantic, reptilian predators with massive, bat-like wings, who wreak havoc defending the gold they have hoarded in the deep places of the earth. But dragons are full of surprises, as is this book.

Book The Dragon in World Mythology and Culture

Download or read book The Dragon in World Mythology and Culture written by Robert M. Sarwark and published by McFarland. This book was released on 2024-08-13 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dragons are everywhere, seemingly hidden in plain sight. These mythological reptilian monsters date far into known human history in nearly every part of the world and are still prevalent in today's media and entertainment. The wide cultural, geographical, and linguistic diffusion of dragons or dragon-like creatures shows how modern humans have influenced each other through shared tales of monsters while simultaneously hinting at a shared genesis. This book introduces dragon myths and legends from around the world by following human culture's shared evolutionary past via language, folklore, the arts, and commerce. Dragons in folklore, literature, and pop culture are analyzed from Eastern and Western perspectives, leading to a dual analysis of dragons in today's popular culture and media. While other books on the topic have focused primarily on classical sources, or on cataloging various dragon tales in general, this work identifies the subtle yet profound ways in which the dragon figure or related motifs have slyly entered into our collective psyche as participants in the modern, interconnected world.

Book excerpt: The author James Blackthorne portrays his characters as having a strong fighting spirit. The main emphasis is on a character referred to as Bardson Wolfe. He is the son of the grand wizard Leon Davith. Bard is a Glorious Golum that faces overwhelming odds in this well-placed adventure. The bronze Golum remains true to his ideals and takes a firm commitment to his father despite every setback. Leon returned to the room with the large mirror. The pen was still lying on the desk. He sat down with his son Bard and explained how generations upon generations born into the Black Army culture, rose to die. None questioned it, none cared, and their culture was founded around the ideal of slaughter, of merciless battle. They knew nothing of cities, save for the ones they razed, and when none would challenge or oppose them in their great power, they would challenge themselves, battling their own ranks for the sake of maintaining the slaughter. Eventually this self-sustaining death machine, this device of war, mutated into the ones that were known today as the Black Army The Army was the result of the chaotic masses suddenly coming. Some called them the black ones, others, Shadow lords. None dared to call them a friend. It was here that battle was fought daily, not for the sake of any ideal or concept, but due to the sheer boredom the armies had amassed for many ages, long since born into the culture of war, a civilization forged from death. new lord was proclaimed. A far more savage, brutal, and intelligent lord than the Black Army could have ever hoped for. And this new high general began creating a bastion for the otherwise vagrant army of darkness, and once it had been devised, he took a name fitting his status and power. Malakaezar the Black Dragon, head of the army of darkness. But he wasn't content to merely let his army settle into the Dark Continent as his predecessor had, and hungrily, this rogue turned his gaze to the lands beyond, licking his lips at the unfazed lands just Bardson Wolfe the high golem was up to. Screaming as those heads fell over them, the black warriors perished then and there at the hands of the Sarganatas Hydra, a horrific monster that planted itself into the ground, waiting for prey to come to it. Born to destroy, born to kill, raised from the youngest available age to kill or be killed, to devote oneself to senseless bloodshed. And no god could hold sway over their hearts. They knew, for many were those who had been attacked by divine magic intended to sway their hearts away from what the majority of the warriors considered to be their true purpose. However, to a black warrior, such as divine magic was simply considered a jest, for gods could never exist within their hearts. They were immune to holy intervention, though it had been tried many times. Most, if not all the warriors were so resilient to divine magic and spells that a single warrior could weather out a smite spell, considered to be the strongest of Divine Magic because the God connected to it was the one attacking.
