Book Documents of American Catholic History Classic Reprint

Download or read book Documents of American Catholic History Classic Reprint written by John Tracy Ellis and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 692 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Documents of American Catholic History A word should be said about the method used in collecting and editing the documents. First, with the exception of those from the colonial period, the arrangement is chronological. Since the Catholic missions of the three European powers that sent out colonies from the sixteenth through the eighteenth centuries are usually treated as separate units, it seemed best to break the chronology in this earlier section and list the entries under the headings of Spain, France, and England. It was also thought preferable to put two or more items on a single person together under the date of the first document rather than to separate them. Most of the material was naturally taken from sources in English, but for that written in foreign languages standard translations were used whenever they were available. In a few cases, however, translations were made either by the editor himself or were supplied to him through the kindness of friends. In the main the documents are printed just as they appear in the original source, although in some instances minor changes have been made either to improve the translations from foreign sources or to insert punctuation in certain English documents in order to clarify the meaning. For each item a single source has been cited in the introductory note, although in some instances the same document may be found in several collections. The translations of papal bulls and encyclicals generally give the student a reference to the official collections of the Holy See where the original may be read in Latin. While reference has frequently been made in the introductory notes to pertinent books and periodicals, no effort has been made to add a formal bibliography with each document. Most of the better books in American Catholic history contain bibliographies, and for all the essential works published up to three years ago the editor's A Guide to American Catholic History (Milwaukee: 1959) will serve the purpose. The editor is conscious of the fact that some readers may feel the need for more of a commentary than they will find in the introductory notes. An effort was made to supply the necessary background for a proper understanding of each document; nonetheless, a few over-all comments may help to clarify certain matters that recur in a number of the entries. This is especially true where the material touches on ecclesiastical points of a somewhat technical nature that are often not familiar to the lay reader. This book was released on 2015-07-20 with total page 400 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 28 We are forced to see again and again valuable historical material pass forever beyond our grasp because we are too poor to purchase it. Though our library numbers about ten thousand volumes, yet many books which we should possess are not on our shelves because of our poverty. This is especially the case with rare Americana. We are, to quote but one instance, sadly lacking in literature relating to the first of American Catholics, Christopher Columbus, our Columbian collection being outnumbered forty-four to thirty-two by the Philadelphia Free Library. The library of a Catholic Historical Society should be an adequate work-shop for the delver into the history of the Church in America. He should come to our library with assurance of finding there the books which he needs. Not only is our collection of printed books too limited, but the American Catholic Historical Society is not the archive which it should be where the unpublished and, so to speak, raw materials of history are stored. For example, here should be found, at least in manuscript, a detailed history, written by a local investigator, of every parish, every Catholic educational and charitable institution, every Catholic activity in the country. Had we the money with which to conduct it, a nation-wide and coordinated investigation would bring all this priceless material to our society. Some years ago we had the good fortune to be able to pay an archivist at the Vatican to reproduce all documents to be found at that central archive which related to the Church in America. It is surprising how many until then unknown documents were thus brought to light. It is often astonishing how much unpublished and original information remains to be unearthed even on subjects supposed to have been exhaustively investigated. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 25 The Catholic atmosphere in which charity prospered and bloomed and in which man had attained his highest happiness has gradually been polluted by the literature which sprung from the loins of the Reformation. This literature is based upon the history of the last four hundred years as written in conspiracy against the truth for the justification of the deeds of the men who instigated and profited by the Reformation. It has taken its character from men who had lost the Christian ideal and sought ideals in nature. That the Reformation had its origin and growth in the greed and lust of men has been proven by both Catholic and Protestant writers. It was forced upon the people in England and Germany in the same way that Mohamedanism was forced upon the Turk. The privileges of taking what belonged to another was the price paid for adhesion to the new religion. What bribery could not accomplish was brought about by hardships, cruelties and even death for those who clung to the old faith. In time, the children, grand-children and great-grand-children of men who participated in this carnival of unrighteousness having forgotten the source of their prosperity and greatness saw only the traditional justification of the deeds which brought about the change. In England and Germany from the time of Henry VIII and Luther until quite recently history could only be written from the view point of those who were in sympathy with the Reformation. Wealth, opportunity for education, and things which lead to physical wellbeing were taken by brute force out of the hands of those who clung to the old faith and were given to those who opposed it. All these have gained glory in their generations and were praised in their days. These were men of mercy, whose godly deeds have not failed. Their bodies are buried in peace and their name liveth unto generation and generation. Let the people Show forth their wisdom and the Church declare their praise. - Eccl. Lxiv. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 414 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society, Vol. 26: Of Philadelphia When, therefore, the poison has been once imbibed in tender years a remedy is scarcely ever to be found. For it is an elusive hope that with the growth of years they will know better and will unlearn what they have learned in the beginning; because few give themselves to a thorough and careful study of history and in later years they will find in daily life more perhaps to confirm than to correct their errors. "It is therefore of grave importance that so pressing a danger should be met and to see that historical studies be no longer suffered to remain in the channel of great public and private calamities... Let bare assertions be replaced by the fruits of painful and patient research; judgments rashly formed by the outcome of serious study and frivolous opinions by the criticisms of wisdom. Strenuous efforts should be made to refute all falsehoods and untrue statements by ascending to the fountain heads of information, keeping vividly in mind that the first law of history is 'To dread uttering falsehood; the next not to fear stating the truth; lastly that the historian's writings should be open to no suspicion of partiality or animosity'... If the Church, then, has always deserved well of history, let her again do so to-day when the very state of the times in which we live constrains to that duty. For, as we have already said, since our enemies have recourse above all to history for their weapons the Church must needs be equally armed and where the attack is most violent there arm herself the more strongly for the assault." This letter was written in 1883 and published in English in various publications, among them The Pastor, a monthly journal for priests, where it appeared in October, 1883. It is from there that this abstract is taken. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 402 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 29 This issue of the Records had gone to press ere the shadow of the death of our venerated and beloved Archbishop had been cast upon the Archdiocese. There is time but to note the sad occurrence and to offer a little tribute of affectionate respect to the memory of one who among his manifold cares and duties still found time to aid with his approval and encouragement the American Catholic Historical Society. A more adequate account of him and his work will appear in our June number. Archbishop Prendergast will be sadly missed in the lives of his priests and people and in the direction of the great affairs which had come within his jurisdiction, but above any personal sense of sorrow is that essentially Catholic feeling of separation from our local chief Shepherd and Bishop of our souls. As the mind ranges back through the centuries there is however a compensation, a deep interior satisfaction in the thought that another link has been completed in the Apostolic chain which, reaching out in all directions to the uttermost parts of the earth, binds them to the feet of Peter. We know that the succession will continue and that others will carry on what our late Archbishop was summoned to relinquish; but we know also that his achievements have set a high mark of successful accomplishment and that his simple, modest, holy life, lofty ideals and intensity of purpose will furnish an undying example and inspiration to those who come after him. The record of his administration of his great office will constitute a most valuable and illuminating chapter in the history of the Archdiocese and of the Church in America. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 27 A Catholic Historical Society is a kind of insurance society, striving by preserving the sources of history to insure the Church against misrepresentation, for there is no more favorite and no more telling attack that can be made on the Church than that drawn from the pages of history. The office of the Society is not, however, that of a Catholic Truth Society, nor is it merely an organi zation for antiquarian research out of sole love of delving into the dust of the past. While it makes no claim to filling a loud-crying need nor to performing an indis pensable service for Catholicity in America, it is not on the other hand a mere luxury of Catholic erudition. In treasuring up the memorials of the life of the Church in America, the Society is doing a work of real service for religion, a work which means much even for conversions into the fold. Beginning with this year a volume will be published annually in four quarterly parts, in March, June, September and December. This is rendered possible by the growing interest in historical research, and the appreciation which has been shown of the value of the Society's work in this direction, as evidenced by a largely increased membership. This book was released on 2015-07-19 with total page 556 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 15 Ladies and Gentlemen: The work of this Society during the past year, and the Society's present condition, are so well and so 1 clearly indicated in the annual report of the Secretary that I judge there is little need of further statement or of emphasis. In the main, the year has been far from barren; but with a larger membership and a more generous financial support, much more could have been realized, and cherished plans of many years' contriving, and of ever-increasing necessity, might have been carried into action or to more perfect development. There is still urgent need of an additional care-taker, a librarian, who should not only see to the books and manuscripts that are already in our possession, but whose vigilant eye and alert mind would discover and rescue for the future historian at least some of the valuable books, letters and records that are in hiding, and which are daily crumbling into dust, or, in any other way, are meeting with irreparable destruction. Such a librarian could, in addition, give great aid to the Research Committee in the preparation of the matter for our quarterly Records. Indeed, it is desirable that all the members of the Society should interest themselves more immediately with historical work, at least to the extent of giving information of historical documents, or "finds" of any description, that may come to their knowledge. It must also include the effects of the war as seen during and after the period of reconstruction. There has never been a time when the world stood in greater need of practical application of the fundamental principles of Catholic teaching and of Catholic initiative and example than in these days of social unrest and of political upheaval. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Records of the American Catholic Historical Society of Philadelphia, Vol. 16 With the passing of another year you are again assembled together to receive from those into whose hands have been intrusted the interests of the Society a statement, or resume, of the work accomplished during the past twelvemonth. In presenting this statement it is with great pleasure that I am able to announce to you that the condition of the Society is a very satisfactory one. When we look back on the year's programme, we must congratulate ourselves on the steady and solid advance which has been made. All combinations, whether of a business or of a social nature, seem to have their periods of rapid growth, followed again by other periods of apparent rest. These latter are not really of rest, but rather periods during which the accumulated energy may be resolved into an orderly and well-considered preparation for a further advance. So it is with us to-day. Whilst apparently we may not have attracted your attention by an extraordinary activity, we have been conserving the interests of the Society most carefully, and if we have been unable to accomplish all that we could wish for, we may look back with satisfaction, content in the knowledge that we have accomplished as much, if not more, than our resources would warrant. From a financial point of view, the statement of the secretary will prove most interesting. When we consider the extraordinary expense which the society incurred during the past year, nearly one thousand dollars being expended over and above the usual necessities, I congratulate the Society on the possession of a balance still remaining of slightly over one thousand dollars in the treasury.
