Book excerpt: "Doctor Syn: A Smuggler Tale of Romney Marsh" is an adventure tale featuring Reverend Doctor Christopher Syn, a kindly vicar of the little village of Dymchurch on Romney Marsh, the area notorious for liquor-smuggling. When tax and revenue officers arrive in the village, being on the trail of the culprits, they find a village of apparently honest, pious and simple folk, looked after benevolently by their philanthropic vicar Doctor Syn. However, it turns out that Syn is in fact the leader of the smugglers of the parish, using his cover as a man of the cloth to run a profitable ring whose dividends are used to better the lives of the local community.

He, his sexton Mipps, and the friendly villagers lead a simple life—until a frigate sent by the King lands at their docks, and an officious captain steps down into the village in search of smugglers. As the captain and his crew investigate the tiny town of Dymchurch, the village is struck by a string of mysterious murders, and the king’s men soon find themselves embroiled in a dark conspiracy. The town and its quirky inhabitants may not be all that they seem. Russell Thorndike turned to fiction writing after serving in World War I. Doctor Syn is the first in his series of thirteen novels featuring the titular character, though chronologically, the events in this novel are the epilogue to the series. This book is part of the Standard Ebooks project, which produces free public domain ebooks.

Book excerpt: Posing as a respectable vicar in Dymchurch at the turn of the 18th century, Dr. Syn is actually the retired pirate Captain Clegg, believed hanged in Rye. He takes on a secret identity "The Scarecrow" and leads a gang of smugglers known as the Marsh Men. They travel Romney Marsh by night on horseback, sometimes using mounts painted with phosphorus to give them a spectral appearance, spreading legends of supernatural evil and menace. He uses his ill-gotten gains to help the poor and destitute in his parish.

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Doctor Syn: A Smuggler Tale of the Romney Marsh To Those who have small knowledge of Kent let me say that the fishing village of Dymchurch-under-the-wall lies on the south coast midway between two of the ancient Cinque ports, Romney and Hythe. In the days of George III, with Trafalgar still unfought, our coast watchmen swept with keen glasses this broad bend of the Channel; watched not for smugglers (for there was little in Dymchurch to attract the smuggler, with its flat coastline open all the way from Dover cliffs around Dungeness to Beachy Head), but for the French men-o'-war. In spite of being perilously open to the dangers of the French coast, Dymchurch was a happy little village in those days - aye, and prosperous, too, for the Squire, Sir Antony Cobtree, though in his younger days a wild and reckless adventurer, a gambler and a duellist, had, of late years, resolved himself into a pattern Kentish squire, generous to the village, and so vastly popular. Book excerpt: "Dr. Syn's creator cannot but write interestingly. . . . Some of the strange stories are horrible and not for the squeamish." - Sydney Morning Herald "These tales of terror and violence are quite nightmarish in their exciting conception." - Glasgow Evening News "Master of the Macabre is certainly macabre and provides just what you want, if you enjoy reading of 'ghosts and ghoulies, long leggity beasties and things that go bump in the night.'" The Star (Sheffield) "It is all very good reading for a windy night, alone in front of an open fireplace." - Winnipeg Tribune "This book is strange, thrilling and certainly macabre." - Yorkshire Evening Press Tayler Kent flees London in a blinding snowstorm, hoping to escape the ghosts that haunt his home. Instead, he finds things may have gone from bad to worse when he crashes his car, breaks his ankle, and is forced to take refuge at a medieval monastery now inhabited by the eccentric Charles Hogarth, known as "The Master of the Macabre." As Kent's ankle heals, Hogarth entertains him with fine food, brandy, and a series of gruesome stories connected with an odd assortment of old relics on display in a curio cabinet. But the terrors are not confined to Hogarth's tales: the monastery is haunted by the evil spirit of an apostate monk and besieged by more corporeal foes, who will stop at nothing to get their hands on one of the Master's treasures. . . . Best known for his series of novels featuring the smuggler Dr. Syn, Russell Thorndike (1885-1972) in The Master of the Macabre (1947) delivers an irresistible mix of horror, adventure, and black humour that is sure to please fans of classic ghost stories and supernatural fiction. This first-ever republication of the novel includes the original jacket art and a new introduction by Mark Valentine.

Book excerpt: A FICTION HOUSE PRESS FACSIMILE REPRINT A STIRRING ADVENTURE TALE OF THE ROMNEY MARSH Russell Thorndyke has evidently let himself go and has had a good old swashbuckling time of it in writing "Dr. Syn," a novel of adventure, the scene of which is laid in Kent in the days of George III. Romney Marsh, the lonely region where much of the action takes place, was continually visited by night riders, fiendish figures dimly seen by the glow from the Jack-o'-lanterns which they carried. In the village lived a person scarcely less mysterious than they--a genial, kindly vicar, who sang quite inappropriate snatches of pirate songs. The refrain which fell oftenest from his lips was the favorite chanty of the redoutable pirate chief, Clegg, hanged, according to rumor, a decade before. The story opens with the arrival on the marsh of a troop of royal soldiers, sent to detect and seize the smugglers who had long operated there. A series of mysterious murders ensue, the suspected criminal being a mulatto sailor who seems to gather a good bit of evidence for the officers despite the fact that his tongue has been cut out and his ears lopped off in previous adventures. The story moves along with a truly boyish gusto, and the final scene, where Dr. Syn, revealed as Clegg the pirate, dies as horrible a death as any of his victims, is sanguinary enough to satisfy a reader of Nick Carter.
