Book Evidence for Electroweak Top Quark Production in Proton antiproton Collisions at Sqrt s

Download or read book Evidence for Electroweak Top Quark Production in Proton antiproton Collisions at Sqrt s written by Thomas Gadfort and published by . This book was released on 2007 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the first evidence for electroweak single top quark production using nearly 1 fb-1 of Tevatron Run II data at s = 1.96 TeV. We select single-top-like data events in the lepton+jets decay channel and separate them from backgrounds using the matrix element analysis method. This technique uses leading order matrix elements to compute an event probability for both signal and background hypotheses. Using the expected signal acceptance, background, and observed data we measure the single top quark cross section: spp&d1;→ tb+tqb+X=4.6+1.8-1.5 pb The probability for the background to have fluctuated up to give at least the cross section measured in this analysis is 0.21%, which corresponds to a Gaussian equivalent significance of 2.9sigma.

Book Search for Pair produced Vector like B Quarks in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Pair produced Vector like B Quarks in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for the production of a heavy B quark, having electric charge -1/3 and vector couplings to W, Z, and H bosons, is carried out using proton-proton collision data recorded at the CERN LHC by the CMS experiment, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 . The B quark is assumed to be pair-produced and to decay in one of three ways: to tW, bZ, or bH. The search is carried out in final states with one, two, and more than two charged leptons, as well as in fully hadronic final states. Each of the channels in the exclusive final-state topologies is designed to be sensitive to specific combinations of the B quark-antiquark pair decays. The observed event yields are found to be consistent with the standard model expectations in all the fi- nal states studied. Our statistical combination of these results was performed and upper limits were set on the cross section of the strongly produced B quark-antiquark pairs as a function of the B quark mass. Additionally, lower limits on the B quark mass between 740 and 900 GeV are set at a 95% confidence level, depending on the values of the branching fractions of the B quark to tW, bZ, and bH. Overall, these limits are the most stringent to date.

Book Search for the Production of an Excited Bottom Quark Decaying to TW in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for the Production of an Excited Bottom Quark Decaying to TW in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2015 with total page 42 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Our search is presented for a singly produced excited bottom quark (b*) decaying to a top quark and a W boson in the all-hadronic, lepton+jets, and dilepton final states in proton-proton collisions at √s = 8 TeV recorded by the CMS experiment at the CERN LHC. Data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 19.7 fb-1 are used. No significant excess of events is observed with respect to standard model expectations. We set limits at 95% confidence on the product of the b* quark production cross section and its branching fraction to tW. Furthermore, the cross section limits are interpreted for scenarios including left-handed, right-handed, and vector-like couplings of the b* quark and are presented in the two-dimensional coupling plane based on the production and decay coupling constants. The masses of the left-handed, right-handed, and vectorlike b* quark states are excluded at 95% confidence below 1390, 1430, and 1530 GeV, respectively, for benchmark couplings. This analysis gives the most stringent limits on the mass of the b* quark to date.

Book Search for Single Production of Vector like Quarks Decaying Into a B Quark and a W Boson in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s

Download or read book Search for Single Production of Vector like Quarks Decaying Into a B Quark and a W Boson in Proton proton Collisions at sqrt s written by and published by . This book was released on 2017 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search is presented for a heavy vector-like quark, decaying into a b quark and a W boson, which is produced singly in association with a light flavor quark and a b quark. The analysis is performed using a data sample of proton-proton collisions at a center-of-mass energy of $\sqrt{s} = $ 13 TeV collected at the LHC in 2015. The data set used in the analysis corresponds to an integrated luminosity of 2.3 inverse-femtobarns. The search is carried out using events containing one electron or muon, at least one b-tagged jet with large transverse momentum, at least one jet in the forward region of the detector, and missing transverse momentum. No excess over the standard model prediction is observed. Upper limits are placed on the production cross section of heavy exotic quarks: a T quark with a charge of 2/3, and a Y quark with a charge of -4/3. For Y quarks with coupling of 0.5 and B(Y to bW) = 100%, the observed (expected) lower mass limits are 1.40 (1.0) TeV. This is the most stringent limit to date on the single production of the Y vector-like quark.

Book Search for a Heavy Top like Quark in Pp Collisions at square Root S

Download or read book Search for a Heavy Top like Quark in Pp Collisions at square Root S written by David J. Cox and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We present the results of a search for pair production of a heavy top-like (t') quark decaying to Wq final states using data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 5.6 fb−1 collected by the CDF II detector in proton-antiproton collisions at [square root s] = 1.96 TeV center of mass energy. A searche for t' --> Wb in events containing a lepton and four or more jets is conducted. By performing a fit to the two-dimensional distribution of total transverse energy versus reconstructed t' quark mass, we set upper limits on the t't̄' pair production cross section and exclude a standard model fourth-generation t' quark decaying to Wb with mass below 358 GeV/c2 at 95% CL.

Book A Measurement of B quark Fragmentation Fractions in P p Collisions at centre of Mass Energy

Download or read book A Measurement of B quark Fragmentation Fractions in P p Collisions at centre of Mass Energy written by Wendy Jane Taylor and published by . This book was released on 1999 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Fragmentation is the process by which quarks and gluons organize themselves into hadrons. The fragmentation properties of the bottom quark cannot be predicted from fundamental principles and hence must be determined empirically. We investigate one such property, namely the flavour dependence of the fragmentation process for bottom quarks produced in 1.8-TeV proton-antiproton collisions. This flavour dependence is investigated by determining the 'B'-hadron production ratios. We use a sample of pp data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 110 pb-1 and reconstruct the following semileptonic 'B'-hadron decays into electrons and charmed hadrons: B+[right arrow]e+neD 0X,hsp sp="0.265"B0[right arrow]e+n eD*-X , B0[right arrow]e+neD- X,hsp sp="0.265"B0s[right arrow]e +neD-s X and L0b [right arrow]e+neL- cX . With these data, we measure the ratios of fragmentation fractions fd/fuvmk id="vm1"=88± 21%, fs/fu+fdvmkr rid="vm1"= 21.5±7.1%hsp sp="0.265"and fbaryon/fu+fd vmkr rid="vm1"=12.0±4.2%. Assuming that these four hadrons saturate production of weakly-decaying ' B' hadrons, that is, that fu+fd+fs+fbaryon 1 , we determine fuvmk id="vm1"=39.8±5.4 %, fdvmkr rid="vm1"=35.2±4.8 %, fsvmkr rid="vm1"=16.1±4.5 %hsp sp="0.265"and fbaryonvmkr rid="vm1"=9.0± 2.9%. These results represent the first measurement of all four 'b'-quark fragmentation fractions in a single experiment. These fractions are in agreement both with previous phenomenological interpretations and with other experimental measurements.

Book A Search for Top Quarks in Proton antiproton Collisions Using Dileptons

Download or read book A Search for Top Quarks in Proton antiproton Collisions Using Dileptons written by Andrew James Martin and published by . This book was released on 1996 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A search for tt pairs in pp collisions with a center of mass energy $sqrt s$ = 1.8TeV is presented. The analysis looks for tt pairs which decayed through the chain $bar {tt}to Wsp+bWsp-bar btoellsp+bar nu bellsp-nubar b$ where one of the b quarks is explicitly identified. In a sample of 109.4 $pm$ 7.2 pb$sp{-1}$ of data, 6 tags in 4 events are found with an expected background of 1.53 $pm$.33 events. This results in an estimated production cross section of 4.6$sbsp{-3.1}{+4.4}$ pb at $msb{top}$ = 175 GeV/$csp2.$
