Book excerpt: The definitive career guide for grad students, adjuncts, post-docs and anyone else eager to get tenure or turn their Ph.D. into their ideal job Each year tens of thousands of students will, after years of hard work and enormous amounts of money, earn their Ph.D. And each year only a small percentage of them will land a job that justifies and rewards their investment. For every comfortably tenured professor or well-paid former academic, there are countless underpaid and overworked adjuncts, and many more who simply give up in frustration. Those who do make it share an important asset that separates them from the pack: they have a plan. They understand exactly what they need to do to set themselves up for success. They know what really moves the needle in academic job searches, how to avoid the all-too-common mistakes that sink so many of their peers, and how to decide when to point their Ph.D. toward other, non-academic options. Karen Kelsky has made it her mission to help readers join the select few who get the most out of their Ph.D. As a former tenured professor and department head who oversaw numerous academic job searches, she knows from experience exactly what gets an academic applicant a job. And as the creator of the popular and widely respected advice site The Professor is In, she has helped countless Ph.D.’s turn themselves into stronger applicants and land their dream careers. Now, for the first time ever, Karen has poured all her best advice into a single handy guide that addresses the most important issues facing any Ph.D., including: -When, where, and what to publish -Writing a foolproof grant application -Cultivating references and crafting the perfect CV -Acing the job talk and campus interview -Avoiding the adjunct trap -Making the leap to nonacademic work, when the time is right The Professor Is In addresses all of these issues, and many more.

Book Community College Faculty Overlooked and Undervalued

Download or read book Community College Faculty Overlooked and Undervalued written by Barbara K. Townsend and published by Jossey-Bass. This book was released on 2007-05-11 with total page 192 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Public community colleges in the United States enroll approximately 6 million students, about 45 percent of all undergraduates. These students are taught by nearly four hundred thousand full- and part-time faculty members, about whom little is known. The community college professoriate is truly overlooked in the research on postsecondary faculty. When community college faculty are studied, they are often examined through lenses more appropriate for four-year faculty. This volume provides a broad overview of community college faculty: who they are, what they do, and what factors affect their career and work. The authors also analyze community college teaching as a profession in an effort to take a fresh look at community college faculty and their work. The goal is to make all readers come to view community college faculty members as colleague making a distinct contribution to their students and to faculty work. Such an understanding is critical in the current policy environment that values postsecondary education for everyone and sees the community college as a major venue for providing that education. This is the 6th issue of the 32nd volume of the Jossey-Bass series ASHE Higher Education. Each monograph in the series is the definitive analysis of a tough higher education problem, based on thorough research of pertinent literature and institutional experiences. Topics are identified by a national survey. Noted practitioners and scholars are then commissioned to write the reports, with experts providing critical reviews of each manuscript before publication.

Book Academic Workplace

  • Publisher : Study of Higher Education
  • Release : 1983
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 136 pages

Download or read book Academic Workplace written by Ann E. Austin and published by Study of Higher Education. This book was released on 1983 with total page 136 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pressures that have negatively affected the work environments of colleges are identified, and research concerning the work experience of faculty and administrators is reviewed. The effect of the extrinsic and intrinsic elements on faculty members' work is considered, including their power and autonomy, their relationships to the institution, and the outcomes of their work. Extrinsic factors include workload and the opportunity structure, while intrinsic factors pertain more to the nature of the work itself, as well the responsibilities and autonomy of the staff member. Attention is also directed to productivity of the faculty member, job satisfaction, and morale. Recommendations concerning the articulation of institutional mission, task and decisionmaking structures, and career planning and staff development are offered. Appended are tables that summarize the research on the work experience of faculty and administrators (presidents, mid-level, and other). Each table is divided into sections paralleling the major topical areas of the text. Studies supporting the major research findings are also listed. In addition, tables present important issues and questions not yet answered concerning the work experience of faculty, administrators, and support staff. A subject index to the 1983 ASHE-ERIC Higher Education Research Report series is included.
