Book The Life of August Wilhelm Schlegel Cosmopolitan of Art and Poetry

Download or read book The Life of August Wilhelm Schlegel Cosmopolitan of Art and Poetry written by Roger Paulin and published by Open Book Publishers. This book was released on 2016-02-01 with total page 678 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first full-scale biography, in any language, of a towering figure in German and European Romanticism: August Wilhelm Schlegel whose life, 1767 to 1845, coincided with its inexorable rise. As poet, translator, critic and oriental scholar, Schlegel's extraordinarily diverse interests and writings left a vast intellectual legacy, making him a foundational figure in several branches of knowledge. He was one of the last thinkers in Europe able to practise as well as to theorise, and to attempt to comprehend the nature of culture without being forced to be a narrow specialist. With his brother Friedrich, for example, Schlegel edited the avant-garde Romantic periodical Athenaeum; and he produced with his wife Caroline a translation of Shakespeare, the first metrical version into any foreign language. Schlegel's Lectures on Dramatic Art and Literature were a defining force for Coleridge and for the French Romantics. But his interests extended to French, Italian, Spanish and Portuguese literature, as well to the Greek and Latin classics, and to Sanskrit. August Wilhelm Schlegel is the first attempt to engage with this totality, to combine an account of Schlegel’s life and times with a critical evaluation of his work and its influence. Through the study of one man's rich life, incorporating the most recent scholarship, theoretical approaches, and archival resources, while remaining easily accessible to all readers, Paulin has recovered the intellectual climate of Romanticism in Germany and traced its development into a still-potent international movement. The extraordinarily wide scope and variety of Schlegel's activities have hitherto acted as a barrier to literary scholars, even in Germany. In Roger Paulin, whose career has given him the knowledge and the experience to grapple with such an ambitious project, Schlegel has at last found a worthy exponent.

Book French Emigrants in Revolutionised Europe

Download or read book French Emigrants in Revolutionised Europe written by Laure Philip and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-19 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The French emigration was an exilic movement triggered by the 1789 French Revolution with long-lasting social, cultural, and political impacts that continued well into the nineteenth century. At times paradoxical, the political and legal implications of being an émigré are detangled in this edited collection, thus bringing to light unexpected processes of tensions and compromises between the exiles and their host societies. The refugee/host contact points also fostered a series of cultural transfers. This book argues that the French emigration ought to be seen within the broader context of an ‘Age of Exile’, a notion that better encompasses the dynamics of migration that forced many to re-imagine their relation to a nation and define their displaced identities. Revisiting the historiography of the last twenty years from an interdisciplinary perspective, this volume challenges pre-existing beliefs on the journeys and re-settlements – in Europe and beyond – of the French émigré community.

Book Essays on Kant Schelling and German Aesthetics

Download or read book Essays on Kant Schelling and German Aesthetics written by Henry Crabb Robinson and published by MHRA. This book was released on 2010 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As a student at the University of Jena at the beginning of the nineteenth century, Henry Crabb Robinson (1775-1867) became the outstanding English mediator of the revolution in German thought. For the first time, this volume collects his early writings, both published and unpublished. The contents include 'Letters on the Philosophy of Kant' and notes from F.W.J. Schelling's lectures on the philosophy of art. Further, Robinson's private lectures for Madame de Staël are presented with her marginalia. In the intellectual history of Romanticism, Robinson emerges as a major figure whose lucid and entertaining essays can still guide the modern reader through the key German texts.
