Download or read book The Nile written by Toby Wilkinson and published by Knopf. This book was released on 2014-06-10 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A hypnotic journey in the company of one of the world's most acclaimed Egyptologists over the fabled river telling how the Nile continually brought life to an ancient civilization now dead and how it sustained its successors, now in tumult. Renowned Egyptologist Toby Wilkinson leads us through space as much as time: from the river's mystical sources (the Blue Nile which rises in Ethiopia, and the White Nile coursing from majestic Lake Victoria); to Thebes, with its Valley of the Kings, Valley of the Queens, and Luxor Temple; the fertile Delta; Giza, home of the Great Pyramid, the sole surviving Wonder of the Ancient World; and finally, to the pulsating capital city of Cairo, where the Arab Spring erupted on the bridges over the Nile. Along the way, he introduces us to mysterious and fabled characters-the gods, godlike pharaohs, emperors and empresses, who joined their fate to the Nile and gained immortality; the adventurers, archaeologists, and historians who have all fallen under its spell. With matchless erudition and storytelling skill, through a lens equal to both panoramas and close-ups, Wilkinson brings millennia of history into view.
Download or read book The Boy Scout s Book of Campfire Stories written by Mint Editions and published by Graphic Arts Books. This book was released on 2021-01-19 with total page 149 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boy Scout’s Book of Campfire Stories (1921) is a collection of stories for children by some of twentieth-century America’s most popular authors. Published for the Boy Scouts of America, the book was intended to entertain Boy Scouts and their leaders on camping trips as well as to instill in them a passion for adventure. In “Silverhorns,” written by Henry van Dyke, an experienced hunter named Dudley Hemenway shares stories with a Scotsman while waiting for their train to depart. Over cigars, they talk about moose hunting, and describe their desire to catch the elusive silverhorn. Zane Grey’s “The Wild-Horse Hunter,” a Western tale, begins with three hunters making camp in the wide-open wilderness. As night falls, they start a fire by a stream and recount their difficult day and their struggle to capture the legendary Wildfire. “The Hydrophobic Skunk” is a humorous tale by Irvin S. Cobb about a rare creature said to live at the bottom of the Grand Canyon. Jack London’s “That Spot,” another story of wit and humor, follows a group of prospectors during the Klondike Gold Rush who try and fail to rid themselves of a stray dog that joins their expedition. The Boy Scout’s Book of Campfire Stories is a collection that captures the essence of storytelling—adventure, humor, horror, and wisdom—for children and adults alike. With a beautifully designed cover and professionally typeset manuscript, this edition of The Boy Scout’s Book of Campfire Stories is a classic of American literature reimagined for modern readers.

Download or read book East West Montage written by Sheng-mei Ma and published by University of Hawaii Press. This book was released on 2007-11-06 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "East-West Montage possesses a unique vision that promises to push discussions of globalization, cultural production, ethnic identity, and bodily metaphors in powerful new directions. Ma is to be praised for his sound scholarship and innovative interpretations. Indeed where others specialize in either the collection of details or the unpacking of text, Ma weaves a strong analytic exegesis rooted in thorough research." —Richard King, Washington State University Approximately twelve hours’ difference lies between New York and Beijing: The West and the East are, literally, night and day apart. Yet East-West Montage crosscuts the two in the manner of adjacent filmic shots to accentuate their montage-like complementarity. It examines the intersection between East and West—the Asian diaspora (or more specifically Asian bodies in diaspora) and the cultural expressions by and about people of Asian descent on both sides of the Pacific. Following the introduction "Establishing Shots," the book is divided into seven intercuts, which in turn subdivide into dialectically paired chapters focusing on specific body parts or attributes. The range of material examined is broad and rich: the iconography of the opium den in film noir, the writings of Asian American novelists, the swordplay and kung fu film, Japanese anime, the "Korean Wave" (including soap operas like Winter Sonata and the cult thriller Oldboy), Rogers and Hammerstein’s Orientalist musicals, the comic Blackhawk, the superstar status of the Dalai Lama, and the demise of Hmong refugees and Chinese retirees in the U.S. Highly original and immensely readable,East-West Montage will appeal to many working in a range of disciplines, including Asian studies, Asian American studies, cultural studies, ethnic studies, film studies, popular culture, and literary criticism.

Download or read book Big Leatherwood Tales The Early Years written by Morris Ratliff and published by Author House. This book was released on 2012-06-05 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Appalachian Mountains, during the 19th and early 20th centuries, stood like an island of constancy in a sea of violent change. The mores of the people were Elizabethan, and the language was larded with the quaint hold-overs from the sounds of Old England. Issues were often settled by acts of personal violence rather than by resort to complex legality in a court of law. Personal honor was a very important issue, and to transgress a man’s honor was to incur his immediate wrath. Men lived by the feud; city-bred folk, usually those whose immediate ancestors had come late in the 19th century via Ellis Island, did not understand this state of affairs, and were often surprised when they gave offense. The natives of the mountain country were often looked upon with condescension by the “outlanders” . . . . often at their peril. Rural people did not suffer scorn lightly! For an old man, in the twilight of his years, fond memory could gloss over the problems, and leave only the good events. For a young boy, at the beginning of life, some events would be ingrained in memory forever.
Download or read book Zigzag Journeys in the Camel Country written by Samuel Marinus Zwemer and published by . This book was released on 1911 with total page 168 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Samuel Zwemer (1867-1952) was an American missionary who became known as the "Apostle to Islam" for his strenuous, if not always successful, evangelization efforts in Islamic countries. He attended Hope College in Holland, Michigan, and the New Brunswick Seminary in New Jersey. In 1889 he and a classmate founded the American Arabian Mission, which later received sponsorship from the Reformed Church, and the next year he departed for the Arabian Peninsula. In 1896 he met and married Amy Wilkes (died 1937), an Australian fellow missionary and nurse. Together, the Zwemers sold Bibles, established mission hospitals, and in 1899 founded a small school in Bahrain. Zigzag Journeys was the second of two illustrated children's books by the Zwemers. Many of its chapters describe specific themes in Arabian life. These include the importance of camels in the desert, amulets and charms, the status of religious minorities in Arabia, the structure of the Arabic language, the significance of the Kaaba, and the life of the Prophet Muhammad. Other chapters focus on the travels of Samuel Zwemer, including journeys through Yemen, Oman, and across the Persian Gulf. The book contains 20 photographs and illustrations and concludes with an exhortation to continue spreading Christian teaching among the Bedouin Arabs and across national boundaries.
