Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Outspoken, no-nonsense, and eminently fascinating, Joseph M. Arpaio captured the public's imagination from his first day as sheriff of Maricopa County, Arizona, in 1992. He has become an icon, not only in his own state, but all over the world. For 15 years, he has maintained an unprecedented 80% approval rating. Famous for his “get smart and get tough” approach to jails, “Sheriff Joe,” as he is universally known, conceived The Tent City Jail where he houses his inmates in surplus army tents left over from the Korean War. Known as the “Alcatraz of Arizona,” the jail features chain gangs and stringent discipline. By eliminating all comforts for his inmates, he has managed to shave $500,000 annually from the cost of keeping prisoners. But he also offers a wide range of educational and therapeutic courses for inmates. To his ardent followers, he is a hero for both his toughness on crime and his sense of humanity. While his opponents decry him for his iron-fisted approach, no one can deny that Sheriff Joe is one of the country's most respected elected officials. Joe's Law is an uncensored look by “America's Toughest Sheriff” at some of the most important and difficult issues facing America today. As the first law enforcement official in the country to arrest illegal immigrants, Arpaio tackles illegal immigration head on—how it intertwines with drug trafficking, taxes, and crime, and how it impacts healthcare and education as well. Arpaio offers innovative and fair ways to solve this dilemma and many others, not only in his own state but throughout the country. Compelling and courageous, this is a candid take on some of America's most pressing social problems, and one man's revolutionary vision for eliminating them.

That includes face-to-face meetings with perpetrators and claimants from hit and run fatalities to burglary and in conducting surveillances. Surveillances are performed from extremely rural areas to the most affluent and all the in-betweens. Spare time is spent penning movie scripts. One (Kinship) has been produced starring Carl Payne (Cole on the Martin TV show). Several in the suspense/horror genre are awaiting production. Download or read book Careers with County and State Police written by Institute For Institute For Career Research and published by CreateSpace. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 26 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: CHOOSING A CAREER SHOULD BE inspiring and fun. What do you like to do? What do you want to get out of your career? Money? Fame? Responsibility? How about deep satisfaction at doing your duty? Serving others? Being a part of something larger than yourself? Those are good goals, too. Nobody ever said that being a police officer is an easy way to earn a living. The hours can be long and inconvenient, some people will never appreciate what you do, and sometimes the work is dangerous. But policing is also a noble and necessary profession, and the rewards are numerous. Big-city police departments get most of the glory in movies and television, but state and county police departments are what hold the criminal justice system together. Arrangements vary from state to state, but most county and state police departments provide security to state and county prisons and jails, and to state and county courts. They also patrol the unincorporated areas between incorporated cities. Many also staff and equip high-cost assets like crime labs and police academies, and make them available to municipal police departments too small to maintain their own. State and county police departments are also often the lead agencies on cooperative projects like anti--gang task and drug enforcement task forces undertaken in cooperation with the Federal Drug Enforcement Agency or Federal Bureau of Investigation. State and county police departments (county police departments are usually known as sheriff's departments and are led by a county sheriff elected by the residents of the county) may not get much pop-culture glory, but they can provide a very wide range of career opportunities to dedicated professionals."

Book In the Name of the Law

Download or read book In the Name of the Law written by J. Mack Lofton and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: More than a hundred men and women in various aspects of law enforcement were interviewed for this unusual profile. The interviews were all conducted in Alabama, but the insights and experiences are common to the criminal justice system throughout the United States. Lofton's subjects ranged from the veteran lone officer in the storefront police department in Town Creek to the college-educated major in the big-city Mobile Police Department. There are stories from county, state, and federal law enforcement agencies and peripheral views from prosecutors, criminal court judges, bailiffs, and probation officers. The goal was to find out what the men and women working in criminal justice thought and remembered about their jobs, which are among the most difficult and sometimes controversial in modern society.
