Book Decoding Jesus A Comparison between John Calvin and Ellen G White s Views

Download or read book Decoding Jesus A Comparison between John Calvin and Ellen G White s Views written by Dr. PP Jones, Th.D and published by Strategic Book Publishing Rights Agency. This book was released on 2014-04-26 with total page 200 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Decoding Jesus will forever change your view about Jesus! John Calvin (1509-1564) and Ellen G. White (1827-1915), though divergent in many ways, shared a pivotal common denominator: the Judeo-Christian Bible from Genesis to Revelation as a major template from which they reflected on the close connectedness, and radical difference of God, human beings, and the created environment. Calvin encountered a theological conundrum. He was unaware that one cannot hold on to the 16th-century Reformation of employing the biblical historical time-line from Genesis to Revelation (as a reflexive scheme on God’s four grand acts: creation, reconciliation [the cross/redemption], renewal [Pentecost/Holy Spirit] and fulfillment/end of time), whilst simultaneously embracing the classical first millennium Trinitarian view. Karl Barth, the great Swiss Reformed theologian of the early 20th century, was aware of Calvin’s conundrum. Barth resolved that the dogma of the Trinity is not found in the Bible, but should be used as a good dogma operating as the main starting pattern of one’s theology. How further can one go than Barth in giving the notion of the Trinity a biblical vote of no confidence? White treaded softly around the Trinity notion. Her vast ocean of voluminous writings is devoid of the word Trinity. She visited Switzerland, and having read Calvin’s doctrines, she most likely saw Calvin and the Reformation’s contradiction concerning the dogma of the Trinity, and wanted to avoid the same trap.

Book Calvin s Doctrine of the Work of Christ

Download or read book Calvin s Doctrine of the Work of Christ written by J Jansen and published by James Clarke & Company. This book was released on 2022-01-27 with total page 126 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The revival of interest in the Protestant Reformation in the mid-twentieth century was marked by several studies of John Calvin. J.F. Jansen, however, noted that these had shed new light on almost every aspect of his thought except that which lies at the heart of his theology - the doctrine of Christ's work. In Calvin's Doctrine of the Work of Christ, Jansen corrects this omission, providing a fresh study of Calvin's work in this area with special reference to his exegetical writings. Besides critiquing Calvin's development of the doctrine, he also examines the traditional theological formula of the three offices of Christ as prophet, priest and king. Reacting against the return to this formula by contemporary theologians such as Emil Brunner, he shows that an alternative conception of Christ's work is possible.

Book excerpt: This book helps recover an important aspect of Reformed theology developed by Calvin and Schleiermacher that is particularly useful for preaching in today's world. It demonstrates that the purpose of scripture in preaching is not so much to reconstruct the life of the historical Jesus as it is to proclaim the saving event of Jesus.

Book Ellen White on the Humanity of Christ

Download or read book Ellen White on the Humanity of Christ written by Woodrow W. Whidden and published by Review & Herald Publishing. This book was released on 1997 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Jesus was both devine and human. But the nature of Christ's humanity is perhaps the most explosive and divisive issue in Seventh-day Adventism. Was His humanity like that of Adam before the Fall, or like that of a fallen human being? It is not just an intellectual question, as one's shape one's understanding of salvation and the daily life of the Christian before Christ's return. Both view-points appeal to the writings of ellen White to support their position. How do we interpret what she has to say on the subject? As he did in his Ellen White On Salvation, Woodrow whidden analyzes Ellen White's comments ftom a chronological perspective. He has gathered all the statements she made on the subject and examines how she expanded or focused her perspective to meet changing issues and needs in the developing Sevinth-day Adventist Church. Whidden asked those on both sides of the issue to send him every Ellen White statement the that they feel speaks to the subject, and he has collected them in an extensive appendix. Every Seventh-day Adventist studying this issue will want this book for the appendix alone. In addition to going carefully through what Ellen White said on the humanity of Christ and offering his conclusions and suggestions for further study, Whidden asked for comments from a number of leading spokespersons who have emphasized the fallen human nature of Christ. Kevin Paulson has written a response to Whidden's research. - Abbreviations. Preface. Section 1- The Mustery of Christ's Humanity and Human Sinfulness.
