Book Biostimulation of Polychlorinated Biphenyl pcb Dechlorination in Sediments of Escambia Bay Florida

Download or read book Biostimulation of Polychlorinated Biphenyl pcb Dechlorination in Sediments of Escambia Bay Florida written by Brittany Elise Young and published by . This book was released on 2012 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: ABSTRACT: Polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) contaminate the sediments of Escambia Bay in Pensacola, Florida. Given the right conditions anaerobic bacteria in sediments are capable of degrading PCBs by dechlorinating the molecule. The objective of this study is to assess, in the laboratory, conditions that may stimulate the naturally occurring bacteria in Escambia Bay to degrade the PCBs. The study may have implications for in situ treatment of contaminated sediments like these in Escambia Bay. Sediments were treated with three different electron donors (pyruvate, iron sulfide and elemental iron) that would stimulate the microbes to use the PCBs as an electron acceptor. Each treatment was tested in triplicate and allowed to dechlorinate for five months in an anaerobic environment. After five months, all three treatments resulted in a decrease in PCB concentration in sediment spiked with 2,3'4,4'5-pentachlorobiphenyl (congener 118) and in sediment spiked with Aroclor 1254. Unspiked PCB contaminated sediments showed a less consistent decrease in total PCB concentration for the various treatments. These results show that the bacteria found in Escambia Bay sediments can be stimulated to remediate the PCB contamination. Further research could develop this method into a viable in situ remediation strategy to address the contamination in Escambia Bay.

Book excerpt: The second edition of Comprehensive Biotechnology, Six Volume Set continues the tradition of the first inclusive work on this dynamic field with up-to-date and essential entries on the principles and practice of biotechnology. The integration of the latest relevant science and industry practice with fundamental biotechnology concepts is presented with entries from internationally recognized world leaders in their given fields. With two volumes covering basic fundamentals, and four volumes of applications, from environmental biotechnology and safety to medical biotechnology and healthcare, this work serves the needs of newcomers as well as established experts combining the latest relevant science and industry practice in a manageable format. It is a multi-authored work, written by experts and vetted by a prestigious advisory board and group of volume editors who are biotechnology innovators and educators with international influence. All six volumes are published at the same time, not as a series; this is not a conventional encyclopedia but a symbiotic integration of brief articles on established topics and longer chapters on new emerging areas. Hyperlinks provide sources of extensive additional related information; material authored and edited by world-renown experts in all aspects of the broad multidisciplinary field of biotechnology Scope and nature of the work are vetted by a prestigious International Advisory Board including three Nobel laureates Each article carries a glossary and a professional summary of the authors indicating their appropriate credentials An extensive index for the entire publication gives a complete list of the many topics treated in the increasingly expanding field

Book Collaborative Research Microbal Reductive Dechlorination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBs in Estuarine and Marine Coastal Sediments

Download or read book Collaborative Research Microbal Reductive Dechlorination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBs in Estuarine and Marine Coastal Sediments written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For many years researchers have tried to identify and monitor PCB dechlorinating bacteria. Strains o-17 and DF-1 are the first PCB dechlorinating bacteria to be identified. These organisms have proven to be very difficult to grow in pure culture thus far. However, for the first time molecular approaches (165 rDNA analysis) has ben combined with enrichment culture technique to identify these organisms. This is a significant breakthrough that will advance the application of bioremediation and it proves that such an approach can be used to identify difficult to culture environmental microorganisms, which is to say most microorganisms. Now for the first time these organisms can be monitored in order to better understand their physiology and to track the organisms in situ, before, during and after active and passive remediation attempts.

Book Reductive Dechlorination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBS in Marine Harbor Sediments

Download or read book Reductive Dechlorination of Polychlorinated Biphenyls PCBS in Marine Harbor Sediments written by and published by . This book was released on 2002 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For the first time reductive dechlorination of PCBs was shown to occur in marine and estuarine microcosms from sites with ambient temperatures below 10 degrees centigrade. It was shown that the types of activities are influenced by the location of the site and the ambient temperature. In addition, it is now clear that non-indigenous dechlorinating organisms can be added to sediments microcosms to dechlorinate PCBs. These studies suggest that reductive dechlorination of PCBs has the potential to occur in coastal regions with lower ambient temperatures. The result also suggest that active biotreatment of PCB impacted dredge spoils by augmentation may be possible in colder climates.
