Book Death at the Lighthouse

Download or read book Death at the Lighthouse written by Loren R. Graham and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The U.S. Coast Guard had long abandoned the North Lighthouse on Grand Island, erecting a pole light instead when, in 1972, summer residents, Professors Loren and Patricia Graham, became interested in buying and preserving the property which was in great need of repair. They were not aware of the mysterious disappearance of two Lighthouse Keepers in 1908 until Graham found a newspaper clipping from The Detroit Free Press of June 15, 1908, under the oilcloth on the rickety kitchen table in the lighthouse. It read: "Slain and Set Afloat, Grand Island Lighthouse keeper and his assistant are believed to be victims of brutal murder and robbery. Mutilated body of one found in boat. Keeper George Genry missing from his isolated post and thought to have met same fate." Graham began a thirty year investigation of the event and has recorded his findings in his new book, Death at the Lighthouse: A Grand Island Riddle. This non-fiction work begins with a systematic investigation.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seth Harrington always dreamed of living in a mansion with an oceanfront view. He knew that this dream would only be a dream if he didn't finish school and become a doctor. Seth was finishing up his last semester in college and his dream was closer to becoming a reality. Finally, his graduation day was here and as he walked across the stage and his diploma was placed in his hands, he said, "I made it, thank you so much," as he shook the President of the college's hand. Seth's private practice was flourishing and now that he had enough money saved up, he took a couple weeks off from his practice to find his beautiful mansion with an oceanfront view. After about a week of searching and frustration, Seth was ready to board the next flight home. Just as he was about to give up and turn his car around and head back to the airport, he decided to go down one more road. And thank goodness he did. There stood in an isolated area the most beautiful mansion he had ever seen, just like one he'd been dreaming about. Seth started tearing up and said to himself, "If I had given up my dream would have vanished in the ocean's breeze." Seth pulled up to the mansion and stepped out of his vehicle and as he was canvassing the area he noticed a lighthouse about a couple of hundred yards away from the mansion. Seth said, "That's cool a lighthouse, I wonder if that comes with the mansion." He wasn't even sure if the mansion was for sale because he didn't see a For Sale sign in front of the mansion. The reason he didn't see a For Sale sign is because the sign fell over and was buried in the sand. The previous owners left a couple of years ago in terror. They took nothing with them just the clothes on their backs. Food was left on the kitchen table as though it was still occupied and the furniture was still in place. As Seth was strolling through the mansion he noticed a note next to the telephone in the study. Being curious, he picked up the note and read it. The note said, "If you should be interested in purchasing the mansion call this number below. If you are wondering why food was left on the kitchen table and all the furniture was left behind, a death in the family kept me out of the country, and would have been too expensive to ship all the furniture out of the country. The furniture stays along with the lighthouse. If you're serious about purchasing the mansion, just call the number below and I think we can work something out."

Book Death Lighthouses on the Great Lakes

Download or read book Death Lighthouses on the Great Lakes written by Dianna Higgs Stampfler and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2022-02-21 with total page 176 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The author of Michigan's Haunted Lighthouses shares tales of disaster and misfortune on the Great Lakes. Losing one's life while tending to a Great Lakes lighthouse sadly wasn't such an unusual occurrence. Death by murder, suicide or other tragic causes--while rare--were not unheard of. Two keepers on Lake Superior's Grand Island disappeared one early summer day in 1908, their decomposed remains found weeks later. A newly hired and some say depressed keeper on Pilot Island in Wisconsin's Door County slit his own throat after a consultation with a local butcher about the location of the jugular vein. A smallpox outbreak in the late 1890s led to the tragic death of a lighthouse hired hand on South Bass Island in Lake Erie. Join author Dianna Stampfler as she uncovers the facts (and debunks some fiction) behind some of the Great Lakes' darkest lighthouse tales.

Book excerpt: One of the most rugged expanses in the continental U.S., the coast of northern California and Oregon saw frequent shipping disasters in the 19th century, before Congress ordered the construction of lighthouses on such dangerous promontories as Heceta Head, Cape Mendocino and a seaward-trending pile of rocks called St. George Reef. The brave, resourceful engineer who directed the Tillamook Rock lighthouse construction, Alexander Ballantyne, was later engaged for the St. George job, and it's this story that author Powers (Treasure Ship) chronicles here. Without any maps to illustrate it, however, readers will need an atlas to follow the movement of men and ships up and down the coast. Later chapters describing lighthouse life prove less problematic; lighthouse keepers were fascinating, courageous characters (and included a good number of women) who not only kept lights burning and fog horns sounding, but also risked life and limb to rescue people stranded in torrential weather.

Book excerpt: On 26 December 1900, the vessel Hesperus arrived at Eilean Mor in the remote Outer Hebrides with a relief lighthouseman and fresh provisions. The lighthouse had been in operation for a year, but it had been noted that no light had been seen from Eilean Mor for several days. The relief keeper, Joseph Moore, found the lighthouse to be completely deserted, and a subsequent search of the island failed to reveal any sign of what had happened to the three keepers. The last entry in the logbook had been made on 15 December and contained a number of strange and distressing clues as to the mental states of the men. One was reported to have been crying, while another had become ‘very quiet’. When it was revealed that the men’s oilskin coats were missing and the clock in the lighthouse had stopped, theories surrounding the keepers’ fates inevitably proliferated. These included a giant wave washing them away, murder or suicide. Others favoured more esoteric explanations – Eilean Mor was believed to have mystical properties. In The Lighthouse, Keith McCloskey explores this mysterious and chilling story in depth for the first time and reveals a shocking conclusion.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In book four of the award-winning Austin Family Chronicles young adult series from Madeleine L’Engle, author of A Wrinkle in Time, Vicky Austin experiences the difficulties and joys of growing up. "This wasn't the first time that I'd come close to death, but it was the first time I'd been involved in this part of it, this strange, terrible saying goodbye to someone you've loved." These are Vicky Austin's thoughts as she stands near Commander Rodney's grave while her grandfather, who himself is dying of cancer, recites the funeral service. Watching his condition deteriorate over that long summer is almost more than she can bear. Then, in the midst of her struggle, she finds herself the center of attention for three young men. Leo, Commander Rodney's son, turns to her as an old friend seeking comfort but longing for romance. Zachary, whose attempted suicide inadvertently caused Commander Rodney's death, sees her as the one sane and normal person who can give some meaning to his life. And Adam, a serious young student working at the nearby marine-biology station, discovers Vicky, his friend's little sister, incipient telepathic powers that can help him with his experiments in dolphin communications. Vicky finds solace and brief moments of peace in her poetry, but life goes on around her, and the strain intensifies as she confronts matters of love and of death, of dependence and of responsibility, universal concerns that we all must face. The inevitable crisis comes and Vicky must rely on openness, sensitivity, and the love of others to overcome her private grief. Once again, Madeleine L'Engle has written a story that revels in the drama of vividly portrayed characters and events of the spiritual and moral dimensions of common human experiences. Can she put them to rest or will a killer bring Lucy’s family to their downfall, in the 9th Lighthouse Library mystery. It’s spring in the Outer Banks of North Carolina, and Lucy and Connor have moved into their new home at last, a historic cottage on the Nags Head Beach. The house needs a lot of renovations, but they worked hard over the winter to get it ready. Lucy is now happily immersed in her work at the Bodie Island Lighthouse Library, planning her wedding, and decorating the house. That is, until a dead body disrupts their peaceful new abode. The first night Lucy’s alone in the house, with the company of Charles the library cat, she hears sounds. Investigating they see footsteps in the dust of the unfinished living room, and the door to the outside is open. Lucy's reminded that the house is said to be haunted: forty years ago the teenage daughter of the owners fled in the night, and never again stepped foot inside her family home. But the sounds have an all-too-human origin and one evening Lucy and Connor find the dead body of a man they don’t even recognize in their kitchen. They soon realize he has a long-time connection to their house. Lucy's forced to find out what happened all those years ago and why it’s threatening her happiness today. Meanwhile, the Classic Novel Reading Club is reading The House of the Seven Gables by Nathanial Hawthorne, a book about another old house full of secrets. Can Lucy find parallels to her own situation in Hawthorne’s fiction before the killer strikes again?
