Book Urban Animals

    Book Details:
  • Author : Tora Holmberg
  • Publisher : Routledge
  • Release : 2015-03-27
  • ISBN : 1317564839
  • Pages : 178 pages

Download or read book Urban Animals written by Tora Holmberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2015-03-27 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The city includes opportunities as well as constraints for humans and other animals alike. Urban animals are often subjected to complaints; they transgress geographical, legal as and cultural ordering systems, while roaming the city in what is often perceived as uncontrolled ways. But they are also objects of care, conservation practices and bio-political interventions. What then, are the "more-than-human" experiences of living in a city? What does it mean to consider spatial formations and urban politics from the perspective of human/animal relations? This book draws on a number of case studies to explore urban controversies around human/animal relations, in particular companion animals: free ranging dogs, homeless and feral cats, urban animal hoarding and "crazy cat ladies". The book explores ‘zoocities’, the theoretical framework in which animal studies meet urban studies, resulting in a reframing of urban relations and space. Through the expansion of urban theories beyond the human, and the resuscitation of sociological theories through animal studies literature, the book seeks to uncover the phenomenon of ‘humanimal crowding’, both as threats to be policed, and as potentially subversive. In this book, a number of urban controversies and crowding technologies are analysed, finally pointing at alternative modes of trans-species urban politics through the promises of humanimal crowding - of proximity and collective agency. The exclusion of animals may be an urban ideology, aiming at social order, but close attention to the level of practice reveals a much more diverse, disordered, and perhaps disturbing experience.

Book excerpt: Fear Not my dear, Fear not of me Fear Not for fear shall not help thee The time is short, my plans are made Your casket shall be trimmed with jade. Thus begins Aurore Leigh Barretts poem, Fear Not an homage to one of her favorite poets, Edgar Allan Poe. It masterfully combines the macabre with the humorous. This stellar work, which Poe, no doubt, would wish he had written, is just one of a few poems in this current collection written in his honor and one of many poems you will find that ably represent Barretts enormous talent. This collection of poems and stories by Aurore Leigh Barrett invites you to step into the world of this creative artist, and sample the breadth and depth of her literary world. Rather than being an exhaustive representation of a solitary style or mood, this book is a buffet of delights as it takes you from the lows of her loneliness to the heights of her happiness - from the dark and scary side of her imagination to the forthright and intelligent adventures of her alter-ego, Holly Hedges Whistler. Through it all, we share in her view of the world, and the way she makes the most of every day this life has to offer. In Stardust, Barrett tells how she begins each day - throwing a spoonful of stardust into the wind. The Stardust flies, the light sparkles, the grass begins to twinkle as the blades catch each falling star, and the flowers bow their heads as if to receive this glistening gift. As Barrett lays bare her feelings, she tells us that writing is a beautiful sweet torture of the soul. She tells us that writing is the pain of pulling away precious bits of memory or time. It is the quickening of birth within the loins of creation. It is the delicious ecstasy of desire that only I can satisfy. Welcome to her world. This all-too-brief collection of Aurore Leigh Barretts writing will leave you hungry for more.

Book Symphonies of Life

  • Author : Eman Abid
  • Publisher : Partridge Publishing Singapore

Download or read book Symphonies of Life written by Eman Abid and published by Partridge Publishing Singapore. This book was released on 2015-01-15 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The work of Eman Abid is replete with the language of hopefulness, aspiration and wonder, and with an obvious love for the endless possibilities of life itself. Her work is, indeed, about the symphonies of life composed every day, by the high-born and the humble of this world. Each human composition is made of moments of deep contemplation, times of simple pleasure, or points where we find ourselves between a rock and hard place. These very moments are the stuff of life, and Emans work brings us into the midst of it and shows us the subtle, transformative power of philosophic observation. Dr. Sandra K. Alexander American University in Dubai Dubai, United Arab Emirates August 2013 To me, Eman Abids poetic images and morals show the marks of being formed in the crucible of the emerging city of Dubai, the textbook instance of rapid modernization and globalization, and she wonderfully engages the challenges to traditional regional mores and ways of life that the city presents. Many of these poems have implications well beyond Dubai for modern societies that have moved so far from their roots, but only Dubai, a city whose rise to ultra-modernism and economic wealth has happened so rapidly, could give birth to the rich juxtaposition of the deep traditionalism and chic couture of our Eman Abids poetry. Her poems are truly a monument to the region and one of the regions richer gifts of culture to the world. Cory Lowell Grewell, Ph.D. Assistant Professor of English American University in Dubai The author firmly believes in establishing the light that lies in wait at the end of every dark tunnel. It is this light that breathes life into our hopes and aspirations, giving our lives meaning and direction. Symphonies of Life invites you to greet said light with courage and hope, both of which shine like a beacon within our very souls. Once you begin to believe, the darkness begins to leave May Symphonies of Life guide you to your light.

Download or read book Charlie Goodbear written by Tom Thunderhorse and published by Xlibris Corporation. This book was released on 2007-10-17 with total page 423 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nothing in life is to be feared. It is only to be understood. (Marie Curie) The nature of people is to shun the unknown, which is what a handful of people in the town of Springdale were doing to Charlie Goodbear. Charlie Goodbear by Tom Thunderhorse is an inspirational tale about the lives of a few small town folks and a good-hearted and misunderstood man named Charlie. The book begins with a detailed explanation of the characters and the town of Springdale. Thunderhorses perfect description of the stereotypical small town life makes you feel close to the characters. It is as if you are part of the gang and not just a silent spectator. The story unfolds only to pull you deeper into the lives of these colorful characters. A wonderful element this book has to offer is humor, and more than one kind. This book will have its reader laughing as well as sitting in silent amusement at some particular quirk. Do not think for one minute that this book is a comedy, however, it will have you near tears at some points too. A word of warning to all the books potential readers: This book is religious! Thats right, Ive said the R word. However, what is more important for those who are sensitive about the aforementioned R word, it is not preachy. This story does not attempt to convert you or convince you of the benefits of believing what these characters do believe. Feel safe, people of all faiths, your beliefs are out of harm's way, so if you can get past the rest of it, just sit back and enjoy the tale. Charlie Goodbear offers an ending that can only be described as bittersweet, but I will not spoil it for any potential readers who may be reading this. You will just have to acquire a copy of this wonderful book for yourself. When I stand before God at the end of my life, I would hope that I would not have a single bit of talent left and could say, I used everything you gave me. ~Erma Bombeck "I have known Tom Thunderhorse for a good amount of time now and knowing him has made this book all the more enjoyable for me. I could hear his voice in my head as I read and his sense of humor and personality comes though in every character. I feel very touched to have been given the opportunity to enjoy his novel before it becomes available to the rest of the world and truly blessed to have met him." ~This Review By, Christina Malley
