Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Skin aging is the result of two distinct, biological processes which may occur concurrently: extrinsic and intrinsic aging. The first chapter of this book focuses on the anti-skin aging effects of natural products, such as polyphenols and terpenes using topical application and oral administration. Future prospects for this field of research will focus on natural products combined with molecular techniques to help maximize the desired anti-skin aging benefits. The second chapter provides a brief review of skin characteristics, skin aging mechanisms and dermal applications. The next chapter of the book reviews the types of pollution and external aggression that skin is exposed to and reviews recently published studies that report that cumulative exposure to the five daily environmental aggressors (pollution, sun, cold, heat and wind) increase this skin damage. The remaining chapters review the role of inflammation in regulation of skin aging; the relevant methods, the physiological structure and function of the Stratum Corneum, as well as the effects of intrinsic and extrinsic aging on these parameters; the physiology of skin photoaging and the emerging therapies for combating photoaging and photocarcingenesis; and the biological effects and the latest findings on the role of macrophage migration inhibitory factors (MIF) in photoaging following UV exposure.

Book Skin Aging Cancer

  • Author : Ashish Dwivedi
  • Publisher : Springer Nature
  • Release : 2019-11-17
  • ISBN : 9811325413

Download or read book Skin Aging Cancer written by Ashish Dwivedi and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-17 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book summarizes the potent effect of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) on the photoaging and cancer formation. Skin is the largest human organ which continually reconstructs itself to ensure its viability, integrity, and ability to provide protection for the body. This protection can be compromised by the aging of the skin which ultimately promotes skin inflammation, impaired wound repair, and increased risk of skin cancer. The book entails mechanistic insights into the UVR-induced immunomodulation and DNA damage in the skin to delineate the pathogenesis, and develop novel ways for prevention of photoaging of the skin cells. It also elucidates the potential of nanotechnology in the treatment of skin cancer. Further, it discusses the bioinformatics approaches to understand the molecular mechanism of photoaging and cancer formation.

With the current level of interest from the general public and dermatologists in suntanning, sunburn and skin cancer, there is a great need for an authoritative, comprehensive review of the mechanisms, prevention and treatment of photodamage. There are only a handful of reputable clinical investigators who could put together an important volume and of this group, Dr. Gilchrest is probably the leading worker. She has collected all the latest information on photobiology, the effect of light on skin structure and function, clinical problems, prevention in adults and children, and medical and surgical treatment

Download or read book Photoaging of Skin written by Johann Urschitz and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2009-11 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Photoaging, a remodeling of the dermis that arises as a result of repeated exposure of skin to UV-light has been identified as the predominant contributing factor to the prematurely aged appearance of sun-exposed skin. To gain a comprehensive understanding of the biochemical events leading to the phenotypic features of sun-damaged skin initiated by UV-light, we have undertaken a Serial Analysis of Gene Expression (SAGE) of sun-damaged and sun-protected skin from a single patient undergoing elective facial plasty. Furthermore, to determine the inter-individual differences in gene expression profiles, we have used RNA preparations from skin obtained from 11 Caucasian patients with moderate sun damage and analyzed the changes in mRNA levels encoded by more than 22,000 different genes represented on microarrays. Elucidating the details of biosynthetic and signaling cascades involved in photoaging and the complex inter-relationships between these different mechanisms will not only assist in establishing the biological basis for sun damage and solar elastosis, it will also provide critical new insights into the treatment of the prematurely, aged appearance of skin.
