Book excerpt: Known by the Greeks as ‘Megalónisos,’ or the ‘Great Island,’ the island of Crete has a long and varied history. Steeped in historical and cultural heritage, Crete is the most visited of the Greek islands. It has also been of paramount strategic importance for thousands of years, thanks to its location close to the junction of three continents and at the heart of the eastern Mediterranean Sea. For much of its long history, the island has been ruled by foreign invaders. Under the rule of the Mycenaeans, Dorians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, Ottoman Turks and, briefly, the Third Reich, Cretans, who are fierce lovers of freedom, have adapted to living with their conquerors and to the influence of foreign rule on their culture. In a dazzling contrast to these three thousand years of domination, we see two periods of the island’s independence: the vibrant apogee of the Minoan civilization and the brief period of autonomy before union with Greece at the beginning of the twentieth century. To guide us through this spectacular history, Chris Moorey, who has lived in Crete for over twenty years, provides an engaging and lively account of the island spanning from the Stone Age to the present day. A History of Crete steps in to fill a gap in scholarship on this fascinating island, providing the first complete history of Crete to be published for over twenty years, and the first ever that is written with a wide readership in mind.

Book The Fall of Crete 1941 Was Freyberg Culpable

Download or read book The Fall of Crete 1941 Was Freyberg Culpable written by Major James Bliss and published by Pickle Partners Publishing. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 221 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: On 20 May 1941, Generaloberst Kurt Student’s Luftwaffe XI Fliegerkorps conducted the first operational airborne invasion in history to seize Crete. Major-General Bernard Cyril Freyberg VC, 2nd New Zealand Expeditionary Force, commanded the British forces defending the island. Freyberg, forewarned of the details of the invasion, possessed numerical superiority over the enemy, but was defeated within twelve days. Freyberg, later blamed for the defeat due to his perceived faulty defensive dispositions, was dealt a losing hand from the start. His troops consisted of those that could be rescued from the failed Greek Campaign and lacked sufficient weapons, communications, and transport to conduct the defense. Despite the best efforts of the Royal Navy, overwhelming Luftwaffe air superiority in the absence of the Royal Air Force isolated Crete and the relentless drive of the attacking German forces captured it. Poor tactical leadership by Freyberg’s subordinate commanders and their failure to prosecute his operational plan led to defeat by the barest margin. While a tactical loss, Freyberg’s destruction of the 7th Flieger Division resulted in Hitler never considering an operational airborne assault again. Freyberg, although accepting responsibility for the defeat, should not be held entirely culpable for the loss of Crete.

Book Unternehmen Merkur

Download or read book Unternehmen Merkur written by José Antonio Alcaide Yebra and published by AF Editores. This book was released on 2009-03-15 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Operation Mercury, the German airborne assault on the island of Crete in 1941, was unprecedented in three respects; it is considered to be the first airborne operation in history; it was the first time the Allies made significant use of intelligence from the deciphered German Enigma codes; and it was the first time German troops encountered mass resistance from a civilian population. Beginning on 20 May, German forces landed near the island's airports, took over the runways, and with numerous reinforcements landing over the forthcoming days, Crete surrendered within a week. Yet it was not without cost. German losses were horrific, with casualties over a third of all men employed. Crete was the first of its kind and many learned from its mistakes as well as its successes, with even Hitler so shocked by the number of men lost that he never again authorized this level of airborne operation. The Conquest of Crete, 1941 describes the eleven days in combat in full detail, including accounts of Cretan civilians--armed with only what they could gather from their houses--overcoming the German troops all over the island. Supported by color artworks of the men involved and their machines, along with photographs and battle maps, this is a complete account of one of World War II's most devastating operations.
