Book A History of Crete

    Book Details:
  • Author : Chris Moorey
  • Publisher : Haus Publishing
  • Release : 2020-08-15
  • ISBN : 9781912208968
  • Pages : 444 pages

Download or read book A History of Crete written by Chris Moorey and published by Haus Publishing. This book was released on 2020-08-15 with total page 444 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For thousands of years, Crete has been of paramount strategic importance, thanks to its location close to the junction of three continents and the heart of the eastern Mediterranean. It’s perhaps not surprising, therefore, that when they ruled Crete, the Greeks called it “Megalónisos” or the “Great Island.” Yet the island has been ruled for much of its history by foreign invaders—including Mycenaeans, Dorians, Romans, Byzantines, Arabs, Venetians, Ottoman Turks, and, briefly, the Third Reich. In A History of Crete, Chris Moorey explores the history of the Great Island from mythological Crete until today and sheds light on how the Cretans themselves have interacted with their conquerors. A History of Crete portrays the Cretans as fierce lovers of freedom who worked around and with the influence of foreign rule on their culture. In an engaging and lively style, Moorey emphasizes and contrasts two periods at either end of these three thousand years of domination: the dazzling apogee of the Minoan civilization from the Bronze Age, representing the first advanced civilization in Europe, and the brief period of autonomy before union with Greece at the beginning of the twentieth century. A History of Crete shows how the history of the contested island affected its people and made them to the Cretans of today.

Book Roman Crete New Perspectives

Download or read book Roman Crete New Perspectives written by Jane E. Francis and published by Oxbow Books. This book was released on 2016-05-31 with total page 288 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The last several decades have seen a dramatic increase in interest in the Roman period on the island of Crete. Ongoing and some long-standing excavations and investigations of Roman sites and buildings, intensive archaeological survey of Roman areas, and intensive research on artifacts, history, and inscriptions of the island now provide abundant data for assessing Crete alongside other Roman provinces. New research has also meant a reevaluation of old data in light of new discoveries, and the history and archaeology of Crete is now being rewritten. The breadth of topics addressed by the papers in this volume is an indication of Crete’s vast archaeological potential for contributing to current academic issues such as Romanization/acculturation, climate and landscape studies, regional production and distribution, iconographic trends, domestic housing, economy and trade, and the transition to the late-Antique era. These papers confirm Crete’s place as a fully realized participant in the Roman world over the course of many centuries but also position it as a newly discovered source of academic inquiry.

This book was released on 2018-02-15 with total page 78 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Franz-Peter Weixler was known for his haunting photos, which he made as a war correspondent of the German Wehrmacht, about the shooting of the male inhabitants of the Cretan community Kondomarie. The affidavit which he submitted to the International Court of Justice in Nuremberg, against the main war criminals of the German Reich, also insistently describes what happened on that 2 June 1941. Before, during and after the war, Weixler produced almost 1000 stereoscopic images, which are stored in the entire width of the German Historical Museum. In many missions as a war correspondent Weixler often made pictures with the stereoscopic camera in addition to normal camera. He was also occasionally used at that time still rarely used color films. This book is intended to give a certain overview of the photographer's work to the interested reader. Unfortunately, for legal reasons, the reproduction of the stereoscopic images was only possible in a few cases, as they have already been published elsewhere.

This book was released on 2008-08-21 with total page 459 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The air battle for Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete began in June 1940 with the Italian declaration of war. In the past, there has been much controversy amongst air historians on many of the details of the operations. It was here, for example, that "Pat" Pattie believed by many to be the Royal Air Force's "unknown" top-scoring fighter pilot of the whole war, saw most of his action. Just how many kills did he achieve and how? Taken from extensive research into available British, Italian and German records, and interviews and correspondence with survivors or relatives of those present, this book seeks to provide an accurate portrait of the air war for Yugoslavia, Greece and Crete from 1940-41.

Book Following My Thumb

Download or read book Following My Thumb written by Gabriel Morris and published by John Hunt Publishing. This book was released on 2012-06-29 with total page 231 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Following My Thumb follows the wandering, rambling, bumbling travels of Gabriel Morris from 1990-2000. In the summer of 1990, at the age of 18, he sets off to Europe with his over-sized backpack, thumb guiding the way. He hitchhikes the entire length of Great Britain, sleeps in barns, on bridges and beaches and under benches, explores the Greek Isles, sneaks into a Parisian movie theater, spends a night at the center of the Place de la Concorde roundabout, and more. In Part 2 of the book, he spends the bulk of the mid-1990s as a wandering traveler back home in the United States, searching for something elusive: a place to call home, a community, love, adventure, meaning, purpose. He both finds and loses all to varying degrees as he attends tribal Rainbow Gatherings in the woods, falls in and out of love on the road, lives on farms and communes, and spends several months in an idyllic valley, far from civilization in the Hawaiian rainforest. The book culminates with his amazing and thought-provoking travels in the mystical land of India. ,
