Book Design and Operation of Automated Container Storage Systems

Download or read book Design and Operation of Automated Container Storage Systems written by Nils Kemme and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-11-07 with total page 473 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The storage yard is the operational and geographical centre of most seaport container terminals. Therefore, it is of particular importance for the whole terminal system and plays a major role for trade and transport flows. One of the latest trends in container-storage operations is the automated Rail-Mounted-Gantry-Crane system, which offers dense stacking, and offers low labour costs. This book investigates whether the operational performance of container terminals is influenced by the design of these storage systems and to what extent the performance is affected by the terminal's framework conditions, and discusses the strategies applied for container stacking and crane scheduling. A detailed simulation model is presented to compare the performance effects of alternative storage designs, innovative planning strategies, and other influencing factors. The results have useful implications future research, practical terminal planning and optimisation.

Book excerpt: When Quinn Matthews buys a Victorian house in the New Jersey suburbs from a relative, she finally owns the home of her dreams. She tries to ignore the peculiar chill she feels whenever she goes near the attic, where her late uncle suffered a fatal heart attack. Quinn, who writes about décor for a living, plans to restore the place in true 19th-century style. Her efforts, though, are hampered by strange accidents. She also hears classical piano music and gunshots from no earthly source, and finds eerie messages on a wall, a notepad and even her computer. Even an unstable next-door neighbor accuses her of “stirring up trouble” with her renovations. Finally, Quinn accepts that her dream house is haunted. But the ghosts don’t want her gone—they want her to right a terrible wrong that took place in 1897. A latent psychic gift makes Quinn identify strongly with their sufferings. Soon, she feels the strain on her relationships, her finances and even her sanity. To lay the ghosts to rest and keep the house she loves, she must re-investigate the murder of its first owner—a dashing classical pianist whose love life was far from Victorian...

Book Double cross

    Book Details:
  • Author : Philip Monk
  • Publisher : Art Gallery of York University
  • Release : 2003
  • ISBN : 9780921047964
  • Pages : 280 pages

Download or read book Double cross written by Philip Monk and published by Art Gallery of York University. This book was released on 2003 with total page 280 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: How to double-cross Hollywood as an artist? This first monograph on British artist Douglas Gordon analyses all of the artist's video projection installations that are based on his appropriations of Hollywood film noir or Hitchcock films, examining Gordon's language works as well. Counter to the usual interpretations of Gordon's work as a dichotomy between good and evil, Double-Cross argues that his work is all about dissemblance, with the dichotomy only one deception among others. It also argues that, with the inaugural separation of the components of sound and image in his work, one of the artist's disguises is that of an author. All the fragments of the artist's work--projections, language works, photography--add up to the production of a criminal author. His final disguise is that of an experimental filmmaker whose subject is not the film noir themes of trust, guilt, fate, and the madness of the double that appear as the content of his work, but the temporality of the spectator's engagement.

Book The Crane

    Book Details:
  • Author : Halim Barakat
  • Publisher : American University in Cairo Press
  • Release : 2008-05-01
  • ISBN : 161797157X
  • Pages : 160 pages

Download or read book The Crane written by Halim Barakat and published by American University in Cairo Press. This book was released on 2008-05-01 with total page 160 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Crane, the renowned Syro-Lebanese author and sociologist Halim Barakat creates a narrator who looks back wistfully on a childhood in a small village of Syria, with the image of flying cranes and in particular one wounded bird as a continuing symbol of his emotions toward the past and its impact upon his life. The narrator then travels to the United States, and, with his wife, goes through the experiences of American college life in the 1960s. He describes his participation in the political protests during that fraught decade, and goes on to depict his later life in the American capital of Washington DC and its surroundings. The link between narrator and author is clearly a close one, and yet the careful way in which the narrative's sequence is constructed allows the reader to invoke the world of the imagination in interpreting this nostalgic account of a Middle Eastern childhood and its international aftermath.

Book Empowering the Voice of the Teacher Researcher

Download or read book Empowering the Voice of the Teacher Researcher written by Roger Neilson Brindley and published by R&L Education. This book was released on 2010-11-16 with total page 133 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Empowering the Voice of the Teacher Researcher through a Culture of Inquiry is essentially a description of one school's initiatives to use collaborative communities and action research to empower teacher research and a culture of collective inquiry. It is written by teachers primarily for teachers and teacher educators. Of course, none of the initiatives described in the text would be possible without the visionary leadership of school and district administrators. Because administrative support is foundational to the process, school and district administrators and staff developers will also be interested in reading about how this school's principal and assistant principal set the stage for developing their community of learners. There are many sound action research texts on the market. What sets this text apart are the first-person accounts of teachers' experiences with action research as examples of profound possibilities for professional growth. As such, this book, written by teachers for other teachers and then contextualized by the Editors so that the relevance is clear to a broader audience, fills an important niche in the literature.
