They performed rigorous penance, practiced formidable austerities, and called powerful godly boons. Ravana and Hiranyakashipu, for example, developed great power and near-invulnerability. The cosmic struggle spilled over into the mortal realm from the celestial realms. According to the epic Mahabharata, the Kurukshetra War was fought between the Pandavas, who were supported by the Devas, and the Kauravas, who were supported by the Asuras.
