Book Analysis of Air Vortex Interaction with Porous Screens

Download or read book Analysis of Air Vortex Interaction with Porous Screens written by Xudong An and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This work studies a model of air vortex flow propagation through porous screens. In experimental investigation, a new and unique apparatus is constructed and used for velocity measurements and visualization of the interaction of air vortex with porous screens. A custom-made, high-precision vortex generator provides a variety of velocity profiles for vortex flow generated with an unprecedented level of precision. The flow fields are captured by using a fog generator and a high-speed CCD camera. The porous screens are constructed out of acrylic rods with various orientations and porosity from rod separation. A variety of parameters are set to be control groups, including porosity of porous screens (phi=0.3 - 0.8) and Reynolds number of vortex ring (Re=700- 3000). The results in experimental tests show the effect of porosity and air injection velocity on the behavior of air flow (separation, accumulation), and the transport phenomena of vortex flow while interacting with porous screens. In numerical study, two models of free vortex ring generator are designed and compared. Experimental setup and conditions are reproduced in two-dimensional numerical model. The goal to develop the numerical model is for obtaining variation of kinetic energy and vorticity of flow which are hard to measure experimentally. Besides porosity of porous screen and injection Reynolds number of vortex ring, more parameters are compared and analyzed, including the distance between vortex ring generator and porous screens (L=50 - 150mm) and diameter of vortex ring generator (D_p=20 - 50mm). The results from simulation model is validated by comparing its vortex ring features to those produced in experiments.

This book was released on 2018-06-15 with total page 100 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A review of research conducted at the National Aeronautics and Space Administration (NASA) Langley Research Center (LaRC) into high-speed vortex flows during the 1970s, 1980s, and 1990s is presented. The data are for flat plates, cavities, bodies, missiles, wings, and aircraft with Mach numbers of 1.5 to 4.6. Data are presented to show the types of vortex structures that occur at supersonic speeds and the impact of these flow structures on vehicle performance and control. The data show the presence of both small- and large-scale vortex structures for a variety of vehicles, from missiles to transports. For cavities, the data show very complex multiple vortex structures exist at all combinations of cavity depth to length ratios and Mach number. The data for missiles show the existence of very strong interference effects between body and/or fin vortices. Data are shown that highlight the effect of leading-edge sweep, leading-edge bluntness, wing thickness, location of maximum thickness, and camber on the aerodynamics of and flow over delta wings. Finally, a discussion of a design approach for wings that use vortex flows for improved aerodynamic performance at supersonic speeds is presented. Book excerpt: This volume contains the description of an EC-sponsered program to study all relevant aspects of shock/ boundary-layer interaction control, the latter designed to improve aircraft performance at design (cruise) and off-design conditions. The work being presented includes a discussion of basic control experiments and the corresponding physical modeling, to account for shock control and a discussion of the airfoil experiments conducted for code validation and control assessment, in conjunction with the basic experiments and computations. The contents is comprised of a section giving a broad overview of the research carried out here and more detailed individual contributions by the participants in the research.

Book Numerical Simulation of the Interaction of a Vortex with Stationary Airfoil in Transonic Flow

Download or read book Numerical Simulation of the Interaction of a Vortex with Stationary Airfoil in Transonic Flow written by G. R. Srinivasan and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 22 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A perturbation form of an implicit conservative, noniterative numerical algorithm for the two-dimensional thin layer Navier-Stokes and Euler equations is used to computer the interaction flow field of a vortex with stationary airfoil. A Lamb-like analytical vortex having a finite core is chosen to interact with a thick (NACA 0012) and a thin (NACA 64A006) airfoil independently in transonic flow. Two different configurations of vortex interaction are studied: (1) when the vortex is fixed at one location in the flow field; and (2) when the vortex is convecting past the airfoil at free stream velocity. Parallel computations of this interacting flow field are also done using a version of the Transonic Small Disturbance Code (ATRAN2). A special treatment of the leading edge region for thin airfoils is included in this code. With this, the three methods gave qualitatively similar results for the weaker interactions considered in this study. However, the strongest interactions considered proved to be beyond the capabilities of the small disturbance code.

Book Observation of the Interaction Between a Transonic Shock Wave and a Wingtip Vortex

Download or read book Observation of the Interaction Between a Transonic Shock Wave and a Wingtip Vortex written by Troy T Bushmire and published by . This book was released on 2019 with total page 69 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present study observes the interaction between two fundamental phenomena in fluid mechanics: the transonic shock wave and the wingtip vortex. While these are two areas of fluid mechanics in which extensive experimental and numerical research has been conducted, there is little information on the interaction between the two. The present study numerically simulates a wing with a NACA-0012 section at Mach 0.758 and observes the interaction between the transonic shock wave and wingtip vortex for various angles of attack. The focus of the study is on the surface flow topology and the flow exterior to the boundary layer. Results show interesting surface flow topology for cases in which shock-induced separation occurs. Lines of separation and reattachment converge smoothly near the wingtip with no evidence of singular point, identifying a region of open separation. Results on the outer flow show there is a distinct interaction between the wingtip vortex and the transonic shock wave. The relationship is directly related to the regions of supersonic and subsonic flow. It is shown that, in general the wingtip vortex only affects regions of subsonic flow.

Book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions

Download or read book Shock Wave Boundary Layer Interactions written by Holger Babinsky and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2011-09-12 with total page 481 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Shock wave-boundary-layer interaction (SBLI) is a fundamental phenomenon in gas dynamics that is observed in many practical situations, ranging from transonic aircraft wings to hypersonic vehicles and engines. SBLIs have the potential to pose serious problems in a flowfield; hence they often prove to be a critical - or even design limiting - issue for many aerospace applications. This is the first book devoted solely to a comprehensive, state-of-the-art explanation of this phenomenon. It includes a description of the basic fluid mechanics of SBLIs plus contributions from leading international experts who share their insight into their physics and the impact they have in practical flow situations. This book is for practitioners and graduate students in aerodynamics who wish to familiarize themselves with all aspects of SBLI flows. It is a valuable resource for specialists because it compiles experimental, computational and theoretical knowledge in one place.
