Book The History of England From the Accession of James II Vol 5 Classic Reprint

Download or read book The History of England From the Accession of James II Vol 5 Classic Reprint written by Thomas Babington Macaulay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-10-18 with total page 324 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of England From the Accession of James II, Vol. 5 I have thought it right to publish that portion of the continuation of the History of England which was fair ly transcribed and revised by Lord Macaulay. It is given to the world precisely as it was left; no connectin g link has been added; no reference verified; no authority sought for or examined. It would indeed have been possible, with the help I might have obtained from his friends, to have supplied much that is wanting; but I preferred, and I believe the public will prefer, that the last thoughts of the great mind passed away from among na should be preserved sacred from any touch but his own. Besidw the revised manuscript, a few pages containing the first rough sketch of the last two months of William's reign are all that is left. From this I have with some difficulty deciphered the account of the death of William. No at tempt has been made to join it on to the preceding part, or to supply the corrections which would have been given by the improving hand of the author. But, imperfect as it must be, I believe it will be received with pleasure and interest as a fit conclusion to the life of his great hero. The effects of this confinement were pathetically defcrib ed by Mr. Holwell the governor, who was confined along with the reit. And, as a detail of this kind, extracted from Mr. Holwcll's publication, has already been given, we ihall here only obferve, that out of one hundred and fifty peo ple confined in this dungeon at eight in the evening, only twenty-two remained alive next morning. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Continuation of the History of England, Vol. 2 He had, in his answer to their former address, assured them of his constant regard to the rights and prosperity of the nation: he had explained the exhausted state of the Dutch; cx-patiated upon the zeal of that republic for the interests of Britain, as well as the maintenance of the protestant religion; and expressed his hope that the English parliament would not only repay the sums they had expended in his expedition, but likewise fur ther support them to the utmost of their ability against the common enemies of their liberties and religion. He had observed that a considerable army and fleet would be necessary for the reduction of Ireland and the pro tection of Britain, and he desired they would settle the revenue in such a manner that it might be collected without difficulty and dispute. The sum total of the money expended by the states - general in William's expedition amounted to seven millions of guilders, and the commons granted six hundred thousand pounds for the discharge of this debt, incurred for the preservation of their rights and religion. They voted funds for rais ing and maintaining an army of two-and-twenty thou sand men, as well as for equipping a numerous fleet but they provided for no more than half a year's sub sistence of the tr00ps, heping the reduction of Ireland might be finished in that term; and this instance of frugality the king considered as a mark of their difii dence of his administration. The whigs were resolved to supply him gradually, that he might be the more dependent upon their zeal and attachment; but he was not at all pleased with their precaution. Book Cassell s Illustrated History of England Vol 5

Download or read book Cassell s Illustrated History of England Vol 5 written by and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-14 with total page 640 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Cassell's Illustrated History of England, Vol. 5: Continued to the End of 1873; From the Accession of George III. To the French Revolution (July, 1792) We shall see in the course of this volume how the evil poison of the French Revolution extended even to our own country, in which at one time it threatened to bear dangerous fruit, had it not been happily arrested in time by the wisdom and vigilance of our rulers. Still, this period was to our country one of extreme peril and unfortunate consequences. While the nations of the European Continent had been worshipping but a marred and mutilated image of Liberty and Free Thought, a truer idea of these great principles had been growing in the breasts of our colonists on the other side of the Atlantic. It will be seen in these pages through what a series of errors, well-intentioned though they might have been, these possessions, which we had prized so highly, were alienated from the British Crown, and having shaken off the dominion of their mother country by a series of splendid successes in the field, and feeling themselves strong enough to walk alone, began their glorious career as the great republic of the United States of North America. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of England, Vol. 5 The Earl of Strafford was considered as chief minister, both on account of the credit which he possessed with his master, and of his own great and uncommon vigour and capacity. By a concurrence of accidents, this man laboured under the severe hatred of all the three nations which composed the British monarchy. The Scots, whose authority now ran extremely high, looked on him as the capital enemy Of their country, and one whose counsels and influence they had most reason to apprehend. He had engaged the Parliament Of Ireland to advance large subsidies, in order to support a war against them: he had levied an army of nine thousand men, with which he had menaced all their western coast he had Obliged the Scots who lived under his government to renounce the covenant, their national idol: he had, in Ireland, proclaimed the Scottish covenanters rebels and traitors, even before the 'king had issued any Such declaration against them in England and he had ever dissuaded his master against the late treaty and suspension of arms, which he regarded as dangerous and dishonourable. So avowed and violent were the Scots in their resentment of all these measures, that they had refused to send com missioners to treat at York, as was at first proposed because, they said, the Lieutenant of Ireland, their capital enemy, being general of the king's forces, had there the Chief command and authority.
