This is addressed from a largely psychological perspective in the context of Hong Kong secondary schools engaged in educational reform. The research objectives were to: (1) identify the perceived identities in terms of commitment to education beliefs and teaching career; (2) look at the degree of convergence between the proposed teacher identities proposed by ACTEQ (2003) and the perceived identity of teachers; (3) examine the degree of convergence between perceived identity and professional identity in terms of definitions defined by Deijaard et al.{ 2000). And (4) consider the extent of the teacher's perceived efficacy in student learning. This study looked at three important components of the identity of the Hong Kong teacher, commitment, teaching focus and efficacy. The methodology was interpretive and emphasizing phenomena studied in their natural settings and in terms of the meanings people bring to them. The findings are based on 21 questionnaires and 7 in-depth semi-structured interviews. Findings exposed there are dilemmas and tensions among commitment, teaching focus and efficacy. Most of the teachers exhibited low job satisfactions but were committed to their job. The decline was due to changing working environment and declining learning attitude and academic understanding of students. Other teachers uphold their commitment by taking up reforms and work to their best and maintain commitment despite decline in interest. However, commitment of some teachers increased over time because they recognized commitment is a critical success factor in teaching career. In general teachers were well aware of their noble responsibility and were committed to their job despite low job satisfaction. While majority of the teachers agreed to most values embraced by the ACTEQ identity proposal, they were skeptical about the measures and evaluation designed to facilitate the acquisition of such values. They contested the degree of commitment implied. Moreover, teaching foci have been constrained by emphasis on academic excellence, heavy workload and education reforms, under which it was difficult to take care of individual student differences. Efficacy was a key element to bridge beliefs and practice. Most teachers had a feeling of low efficacy in influencing student's academic results but were more confident in helping students in moral development. Low confidence in influencing students' academic results because (i) students learning are influenced by many factors which are considered to be more powerful than teachers, (ii) The standard curriculum, which cannot take care of individual difference. A dilemma between teachers' beliefs and actual practice has steadily taken its toll on the confidence of teachers. Teachers in Hong Kong have a contrived professional identity. On the one hand, they fully embrace the proposed ideal values but with reservation of the commitment expected. On the other hand, their perceived beliefs and actual practice are not in harmony because they see an unsupportive education environment. For this reason and many others – political, cultural and educational – this book reports research on the many facets of the experience and people involved, both now and in the past. The emphasis in research has so far tended to focus on contemporary student mobility but this collection deliberately includes articles on mobile staff, because the question of mobility is a matter for universities and higher education in its entirety and not just a matter of bringing new students into existing and unchanging lectures, laboratories and seminars. Despite the fact that universities are and have been international institutions in their composition from the beginning, universities became in the 19th and 20th century de facto national institutions. This has changed and continues to change in the 21st century, for many reasons, but often financial, as universities seek to enhance their budgets in a globalised economy, and students seek to enhance their employment chances by acquiring qualifications with a difference. However, even if the starting point is financial, nonetheless the chapters in this book demonstrate that the effects of mobility are much more far-reaching. The effects are on host universities, on the university community of staff and students, on the ways in which staff and students understand the nature of university study, on the ways students may or may not integrate with a local community. By experiencing something different—for institutions, an influx of students with different ideas about academic study, for students an interaction with ‘locals’ and with other ‘internationals’, for staff a challenge to their assumptions about teaching and learning—all see themselves in a new light and are often forced to change. This book charts the changes which are happening now and will undoubtedly continue for the foreseeable future. It therefore offers all involved a reflection on their own experience and practice and the means of improving them.

Adopting a sociocultural perspective, it reveals how Tanzanian teachers understand the role of assessment in relation to their classroom practices, community and other factors. The book determines that although teachers in Tanzania generally consider assessment to be useful for evaluating and monitoring learning, improving student performance and for accountability, their assessment practices are rarely seen as directly supporting student learning; it is not that teachers do not know how to implement the mandated assessment reforms. Instead, they are reluctant to adopt and embrace the reforms because they consider them to be contradictory to their teaching roles, and overly burdensome, if not implausible, given the physical, economic and cultural contexts of teaching and learning. This book argues that improving traditional assessments, rather than radically transforming them, can be more effective for cultivating practices that suit the physical, political, economic and cultural contexts of Tanzanian schools. Highlighting the significance of sociocultural factors in educators’ professional practices, while also illustrating the major challenges in implementing global reform agendas in diverse contexts, it is a valuable resource for educators and scholars interested in development and educational reform in African contexts.

This edited collection traces the history of considerations of the meaning and importance of race and racism in society and education through a deep dive into the contents of the archives of the journal Educational Philosophy and Theory. Journal articles from the 1970s to today have been carefully selected throughout the text to showcase the trends and transformations in the field of educational philosophy over time. While historically western analytic philosophy of education did not focus particularly on race and racism, this changed in the 1990s, with the emergence of critical conversations about social justice that moved beyond liberal models. More recently, historical and theoretical accounts have sought to understand the processes of racialization in depth, as well as the intersectional nature of race privilege and discrimination across contemporary diverse societies worldwide. Abstract: Abstract The problem addressed in this dissertation is the inadequate awareness of civic identity among Hong Kong adolescents. The effects derived from this are low involvement in civic activities, lack of commitment to society and confidence towards the society. Such attitude of adolescents is caused by the social-political factor, education system, parenting, learning environment, and their own cognitive and psychological development. In order to strengthen adolescents' sense of civic identity, the central thesis is the suggestion of applying a holistic approach in civic education promotion. A person's civic identity is shaped in part by their experience. During this experience, three domains, cognitive, emotional and behavioral, are significant. In this holistic approach, cognitive experience forms knowledge base, while the behavioral experience in society provides with adolescents opportunities to examine what they have learnt and get a thorough picture of society. Their actual experience can inspire their thinking of identity and evoke their affection to the society. With positive emotional attachment, sustained citizenship behavior can be maintained. None of these three factors can work alone. Citizenship behavior is formed under the inter-dependence of the three factors.
